UPDATE: A massive thanks to everyone who helped out with this ☺️

As a result, my little single-user instance has made contact with 11,274 other instances across the Fedi 😲

So no further boosts needed, really appreciate everyone who helped out 😁

ORIGINAL POST: I've got a quick favour to ask. If you're reading this post on Mastodon (or the Fediverse), please click boost.

How come?

I recently moved across to my own self-hosted single-user server (using GoToSocial.org). For a bunch of reasons, including visibility across the Fedi, it would really help out.

@aj done. Little snac, big snac.
@aj Notification after edit works:)
@aj I saw your post on our server's trending page. 👍
One oddity: I'm using the phanpy web client for Mastodon which has an option to load all replies and likes from a post's server (even those that didn't travel to our instance using normal ActivityPub means). But that didn't work in your case. Maybe a shortcoming of GoToSocial...
@compfu That's interesting 🤔

There's a good possibility that there's a setting somewhere I need to tweak to fix that...

Also, thanks for the heads up about the Phanpy setting. I recently installed Phanpy but haven't had a chance to really play around with it.

@aj @compfu GTS fixed the replies problem, anyway, before Mastodon did.

Posts and Post Properties - GoToSocial Documentation

@aj @compfu But GTS has authorized fetch enabled by default and cross-checks blocked instances, so that might have something to do with that.

@compfu @aj moshidon reports "remote info unavailable" too. im sure this isnt "a shortcoming of gotosocial", and moreso that these clients (phanpy, moshidon) are expecting mastodon-specific api endpoints. if so, the shortcoming would be with our clients
@aj actually had no iddea you'd moved! boosted
@aj Done! And welcome to the party! \o/
@aj I'm myself thinking of moving to a self hosted server.
@aj You mean boost/repost? "share" would be share. to what?
@aj sharing over here from mastodon.online

@aj

Hearing/reading you clearly.

😊

@aj
I have clicked 'boost", and also "share", which returned this link

@aj
Sound you like to gibt US Dome Feedback? About visibility and the experience with your server?
@aj 👋🏻 from another Aussie single user (but multi-account) instance!
@europlus Amazing, followed 😊

And my retro computers of choice are more of the Commodore, Amiga, and Atari variety. But I did use an Apple II and IIgs back in the day (both at school, and Aldo one if our friends had one).
@aj while an absolute retro Apple fanboy, I do boost and like other retro platform posts 🤭

@aj

I'm already following, so automatic boost

Good luck!

@f800gecko

"Follow" pulls it to your instance. "Boost" pushes it to all the instances of your followers. "Boost" and shortly after "unboost" still pushes it to all those instances, but without actively showing up in your followers streams.

@aj

@aj @markmason I did the other way around 🤣 moved to my own self hosted instance
@aj it feels great to self host and be in charge of your data.
@iamemmajoy It's part of a bigger project for me if moving off big tech, embracing FOSS, and self-hosting where I can...
@aj I've been moving that way also. The only thing I'm not self hosting is email because that was excruciatingly frustrating last time I tried.
@iamemmajoy I've moved email hosting to my domain registrar, rather than attempt to set up my own email server.

It's just a matter of slowly migrating them.off Gmail.

The big things I've done are set up a home media server running OSMC, install KDE Neon on my main desktop, replace most of my mobile apps with alternatives from FDroid, and set up Nextcloud...
@aj @iamemmajoy
The email is continuing to by stumbling block. I'm procrastinating by telling myself I'm "comparing options."
@iamemmajoy @aj yay so many selfhosters, love to see it!
I'm also wary of self-hosting email but recently did so for a non-profit that my friend is starting and between cPanel mailbox setup, RoundCube webmail, and properly configuring DNS (DMARC and DKIM) it's a lot easier than it used to be. Not sure if I'm brave enough to host it on a bare server without cPanel... yet!

@shom @aj mailcow is a great setup with docker containers.

The biggest issue I had was filtering out incoming spam. I could never get the filters right to mitigate the number of false positives and false negatives. I missed too many important emails from being too aggressive with filters.

@iamemmajoy Ugh yeah, spam! It's just email is so important that it's hard to want to take that risk. Might try learning more with a secondary domain. For now I use my own domain with protonmail.
@aj
@aj showing up fine here on mstdn.social
@aj Hello from the wider fediverse
@aj I could use a Boost here as well. I'm also #selfhosted on #gotosocial.
@aj I would do this (was originally self hosting my blog) but between the services on my own network and everything else I have going on it’d be a lot of work for me to manage my own Mastodon instance. It might be a long term goal for me though, as I want to build a community around my project Misaligned Markets.
@aj If you haven't submitted a token to fedibuzz, you might want to consider doing so (if gotosocial supports it). It can help a lot with visibility and reach. It's very useful for single user instances.
#FediBuzz: Donate a token

@aj

Very cool! Congrats!

@mastodonmigration @aj I used Mastodon.host which is managed and simple, but super happy to see this!
@aj still an urban legend
@aj It really takes time to federate small servers, but soon as one interaction - it gets better
@aj shared! this is a small server but I'm connected with a lot of folks
@CatsWhoCode Thankk youuu 💖
@aj my pleasure!! My main is @catswhocode if you want to follow me there 😺
@aj Looks like I boosted this 60 days ago and it's still doing the rounds.
@anne_twain Thanks for sharing it 😊

And as a result, this instance has managed to reach 10,354 other instances 😳

So a really significant chunk of the Fediverse, which isn't bad for a single-user instance.
@aj @anne_twain other than database size, this gains you precisely nothing though :/
@aj boosted by @cpm so showed up in my feed 🙂
@aj Just boosted you from two accounts at different domains that I have access to!

@aj there’s precisely one thing boosting your post would do: make your account visible to people who might want to follow you.

Anything else is cargo-culting vibe-writing. Urban legends, hard to get rid of.

And for boosting, an intro post serves much better than that. Or a pic of your cats, at least… *looks at profile* which you indeed seem to be owned by, so there.
