Ever heard of the Butter Line?
@infobeautiful
Beatifully correllates with heat :)
@infobeautiful yes, I have. But that map is hundred years out of date.
@halla @infobeautiful
Indeed, our NL household is definitely light-green.
@hlangeveld @infobeautiful Even my gran had always a bottle of olive oil open and going. (Though be fair, she was the Amstrerdam gran. The Sprang Capelle gran only ever used margerine. One was a seamstress, the other a butcher's daughter. Both were born a tad or a bit more over a hundred years ago.)

@halla @infobeautiful

When I grew up it was always margarine.
60s, 70s.

@hlangeveld @infobeautiful And ten years ago, I was in Los Angeles for a Blue Systems hackathon, and one morning I made pankaces, and fried them in butter and lard, and people were all about the olive oil/butter boundary, and then I made moussaka with olive oil, then were all about all of that again, and I was like, where am I?
@halla @infobeautiful One of my favourite recipes is Turkish Mussaka.
@infobeautiful Comparing that to the "Distribution area of olive trees in Europe"
@infobeautiful I feel a word is missing. Most consumed what?
@infobeautiful I believe this data, but i would like to know about Margarine too

@maybit @infobeautiful Makes sense.

Although damn. Spain + Italy at least do some really good lagers.

@infobeautiful that's interesting. Have you mapped the Sweet Tea Line to demarcate the "American South" (southern US)? e.g., sweet iced tea is predominant in southern Virginia and northern Florida, unsweet in NoVA, south Florida.
@infobeautiful
no, thank you. I need to live south of the butter line, very important.
@infobeautiful geht genau durch meine küche 😳😎
@infobeautiful What colour for those of us that use a spread made from olive oil?
@infobeautiful Civilized Europe vs barbarians. 🫠
@infobeautiful I wonder how this correlates with garlic consumption?
@infobeautiful I had no idea this was a thing.
@infobeautiful now overlay the avg weight
@infobeautiful
It could be even more granular by adding a *salted* butter line (which very well could be an island)
@infobeautiful
extra virgin olive oil, sometimes butter but non of that fake margarine sh*t.
@ilias @infobeautiful We had margarine when I was a kid. My Italian grandparents had butter for bread, oil for everything else. I used to sneak over. πŸ™‚
@infobeautiful see also Potato Europe Vs Tomato Europe.
@infobeautiful now make a second layer with the tomato-potato boundary to see how well they match
@infobeautiful Wow this is a graph of where in Europe food has flavor vs being the worst white ppl food imaginable.
