Friends, we are doing something new this tuesday. We are kicking off the #FridayMovie poll early, to give democracy a chance to play itself out. And so, I present to you, four movies, the winner of which I will watch after getting home from a long day in three days
I urge you to choose wisely. Democracy itself (or at least the parts of it that we inhabit) depends on it!
My fellow #FridayMovie enthusiasts, this is your captain speaking. I am happy to announce that round 2 is rapidly (as these things go) coming to a close. This, in conjunction with me having a slow saturday eve, has prompted me to speed things up a notch by watching OtherLife (2017)
Voting and participatory democracy will return next week
It's thursday, which means it's randomly recurring poll time. You now have the fate of the future in your hands
And so, #FridayMovie round two is officially over. To recap:
How to make an American quilt (1995)
Operation Avalanche (2016)
Ghost world (2001)
Dr Strangelove (1964)
River of no return (1954)
The day the Earth stood still (1951)
OtherLife (2017)
The good, the bad and the ugly (1966)
[The good, the bad and the weird (2008)]
Plan 9 from outer space (1957)
The conversation (1974)
Bagdad café (1987)
Dead men don't wear plaid (1982)
The Andromeda strain (1971)
The omega man (1971)
I want to add to the record that I watched Memorias del Subdesarrollo, and that it was an ingot of melancholia
This has no other effect than it not appearing in future polls, and me having to sit down in mute silence for a while
there are two ways of reading this movie. one is as a glimpse into the everyday life of ordinary italians in the period after the second world war, a continuous cascade of slices of life
the other is this glorious recurring joek

Sensing a thematic resonance I went ahead and watched I am a fugitive from a chain gang (1932). This turned out to be true - when combined with Bicycle thieves, you've got yourself the basis for a good ol' critical paper on the criminal justice system
For bonus points, it also ties into the Powder ganger faction in New Vegas, as illustrated by this representative still
It amuses me greatly that the round system is purely a system and function of internal accounting, and has no real way of being audited or verified from an external point of view
When building your own ancient traditions, you also end up with your running commentary on what even those traditions mean and should be
With the close of round three, we have arrived at the opening of round four. This brings with it a number of changes. One is that I will no longer be running down a list of movies until I've seen 'em all; the Syllabus is completed. Another change is that the options will no longer be specific films, but rather categories from which a title will be drawn. These categories may or may not be intuitive, as you will find out
Now, onward. There are more fridays ahead
@wxcafe out of curiosity, I looked it up, and apparently
a) in english, they're called Skipper's pipes, and
b) they are somewhat illegal to market in several jurisdictions, on the grounds of being a marketing vehicle for tobacco products (with or without liquorice)
the more you know
and the winner
which may or may not reflect the geographic basis of mastodon as a social network
is
Berlin
Representing this city are two movies. The first is Cabaret (1972), which probably need no introduction. (Sadly, I was not able to get a hold of the 1927 version.) The second is Menchen am Sonntag (1930), which appears to consist of Berliners out and about on a random Sunday afternoon in the beforetimes
Let's hit it
@aschmitz it's a solid choice, with a great cinematic history (and a slightly less great uncinematic one)
but when the results are 9 votes for it and two votes for everything else, it deserves a comment
