Sensing a thematic resonance I went ahead and watched I am a fugitive from a chain gang (1932). This turned out to be true - when combined with Bicycle thieves, you've got yourself the basis for a good ol' critical paper on the criminal justice system

For bonus points, it also ties into the Powder ganger faction in New Vegas, as illustrated by this representative still

With only mere weeks left of this #FridayMovie round, the search for a category for the next round intensifies. I'm not saying that "over the top Bollywood bangers banging away" is a possible category, but

We have arrived at the penultimate poll of the third round of the #FridayMovie cinematic ultravaganza. But before letting the proverbial prowlers out of the bag, let's finish the current list, shall we?

It amuses me greatly that the round system is purely a system and function of internal accounting, and has no real way of being audited or verified from an external point of view

When building your own ancient traditions, you also end up with your running commentary on what even those traditions mean and should be

"what's the lore behind-"
listen, I made it up five minutes ago, and it won't mean anything until it has been written through praxis into the fabric of memory. even then, it will read differently depending on whatever winds prevail at that particular future moment. it is both less and more complicated than it seems
and the winner
which I made extra sure was spelt correctly this week
is
Stranger than paradise
title didn't lie
it was stranger than paradise
Just as the Long goodbye got a shoutout in Long kiss goodnight (both previous entries in this series), so too did recent winner Tokyo story

@tqft oh yes. to put it succinctly: it will have been worth the wait

it also features a (1) diegetic cassette player

One is that I will no longer be running down a list of movies until I've seen 'em all; the Syllabus is completed. @julienkirch that would not be a pipe
@sargoth sorry a what?
@wxcafe a pipe made of liquorice
for the distinguished gentlenyan who is not allowed to carry a lighter, and is more likely to bite it anyway
@sargoth ah, makes sense

@wxcafe out of curiosity, I looked it up, and apparently
a) in english, they're called Skipper's pipes, and
b) they are somewhat illegal to market in several jurisdictions, on the grounds of being a marketing vehicle for tobacco products (with or without liquorice)

the more you know

@sargoth tobacco products with liquorice? what does that even mean. wouldn't the liquorice like. melt?
@wxcafe @sargoth it uses the liquorice seeds that actually flavor the candy

and the winner
which may or may not reflect the geographic basis of mastodon as a social network

Berlin

Representing this city are two movies. The first is Cabaret (1972), which probably need no introduction. (Sadly, I was not able to get a hold of the 1927 version.) The second is Menchen am Sonntag (1930), which appears to consist of Berliners out and about on a random Sunday afternoon in the beforetimes

Let's hit it

thank you, subtitles
this second movie does not need subtitles
it is in fact all intertitles

for some reason, the subtitles were in Spanish, which led to this wonderfully anglo-confusing juxtaposition

@aschmitz it's a solid choice, with a great cinematic history (and a slightly less great uncinematic one)

but when the results are 9 votes for it and two votes for everything else, it deserves a comment

@sargoth Oh, yeah, just contributing back some information. (Also Paris and NY feel like they're overrepresented in film, so meh.)
