Nice. It makes me happy to see people spine up and fight back.
In the next era, the post-trump backlash against authoritarianism and the right, anybody who capitulated will be doomed, methinks. Just like Tesla today.
It's the wealthiest university in the world, and 188 living alumni are billionaires. They're refusing to comply because they really don't need to, and because Harvard grads tell the president what to do, not vice versa.
Standing up to Trump is a matter of power dynamics, not ethics. Still nice to see it though, and hopefully it incentivizes other institutions and pisses off Trump 🤗
I've never really distinguished between my nation's major colleges in my mind. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia... they're all too expensive and/or competitive to have been within my academic reach.
I've learned things though, from this administration.
Columbia supports oligarchy and fascism, if only by bowing to it.
Harvard does not, and apparently has principles.
"Thou has spoken first, old man --
Get up and bar the door!"
But better late than never. Thank you, Harvard.
The federal government says it is freezing more than $2.2 billion in grants and contracts to Harvard University. The institution says Monday it won’t comply with a list of demands from the Trump administration as part of its campaign against antisemitism. The list at Harvard was updated Friday, and includes government and leadership reforms, as well as a requirement to institute what it calls a “merit-based” admissions and hiring policy. It also includes an audit of the study body and faculty on their views about diversity, as well as a ban on face masks which appeared to target pro-Palestinian protesters.
BOSTON (AP) — The federal government says it’s freezing more than $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts to Harvard University, after the institution said it would defy the Trump administration’s demands to limit activism on campus.
Attached: 1 image Good news! Unlike Columbia University, Harvard is not caving in to the Trump gang's attempt to snatch away their federal funds. This is on top of all the universities who already sued the Trump-run National Institute of Health. They are - pardon the all caps, I'm copying this from the legal action: ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION, ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC AND LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES, BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY, BROWN UNIVERSITY, THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, THE CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, CORNELL UNIVERSITY, THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER, and TRUSTEES OF TUFTS COLLEGE. https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/mit-tufts-and-brandeis-sue-nih-for-attempted-cut-of-indirect-research-funds/ar-AA1yP0yZ (1/n)
Do not bow to thugs and dictators…
@VirginiaHolloway @heidilifeldman
Bring it on, then. #Hur was a #Trump appointee. He is qualified to be AG. Read his bio.
@heidilifeldman Excellent news! Capitulation will achieve nothing, because 47 will never stop moving the goalposts (as I’m sure Columbia will discover shortly).
Don’t know if you saw this action, which is different but related. It includes Rutgers, my husband’s — and soon to be my son’s — college. Article in the Chronicle of Higher Education; link is archive-dot-ph to circumvent the paywall.
“These Faculty Senates Are Trying to Band Together to Stand Up to Trump”
Tsss...Columbia looking worse by the minute

As the meme goes: Fuck you; strong letter to follow.
@heidilifeldman Harvard had a whole city standing behind them when they wrote that letter. This is not just Harvard having good judgement, it's also the hard work of a number of local advocacy groups, as well as the entire City Council of Cambridge which unanimously endorsed the protest on April 12th pressuring Harvard not to give in.

@sloanlance @heidilifeldman here's an article written by Julian Vasquez Heilig, a Harvard alum now at Western Michigan University, which may be of interest to Michigan folks. It's time for faculty across institutions to ally together and strengthen their schools against these threats.

@heidilifeldman One lawyer signing that letter is Robert K. #Hur, whom #Trump appointed as US Attorney for the District of Maryland. After that, he was Special Counsel appointed to investigate #Biden 's handling of documents.
Unlike the wimpy lawyers who bowed to Trump, Hur is the guy I want fighting for me.
Meanwhile, my college postponed the black student alumni out of fear of it being “too inclusive” for black graduates to be seen together all at once celebrating their accomplishments…
@heidilifeldman
Fight fiercely, Harvard
Fight, fight, fight!
Demonstrate to them our skill
Albeit they possess the might
Nonetheless we have the will
