Harvard squarely standing up to the Trump. Its lawyers to the regime: “The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms as an agreement in principle. … Harvard is not prepared to agree to demands that go beyond the lawful authority of this or any administration.” Full letter in pics.

The Promise of American Higher Education

No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue

Harvard University President

@heidilifeldman

Nice. It makes me happy to see people spine up and fight back.

In the next era, the post-trump backlash against authoritarianism and the right, anybody who capitulated will be doomed, methinks. Just like Tesla today.

@heidilifeldman maybe there were some spine stem cells left at Harvard, after all.

@ScottLett @heidilifeldman

It's the wealthiest university in the world, and 188 living alumni are billionaires. They're refusing to comply because they really don't need to, and because Harvard grads tell the president what to do, not vice versa.

Standing up to Trump is a matter of power dynamics, not ethics. Still nice to see it though, and hopefully it incentivizes other institutions and pisses off Trump 🤗

@me_valentijn @heidilifeldman If the schools with resources don't fight, things are worse. If they'd obeyed in advance, with their endowment, it would likely mean they've joined the coup.
@heidilifeldman Glad to hear they are standing up to bullies.
@heidilifeldman Looking at you, Johns Hopkins. #Resist
@heidilifeldman One would hope that a University is a place of learning, and that by watching the abuse of Columbia University others will have learned that this is the *only* course of action they can take. No amount of compliance or appeasement will be enough, its either fight or surrender completely. Those are the only two choices.
@heidilifeldman I desperately hope that higher education will stand united on this issue. I spoke last night with the spouse of a professor at a different institution who has had her grant funding pulled; it's a loss not only for the students, the institution, and the pursuit of knowledge, but also for the family personally.

@heidilifeldman

I've never really distinguished between my nation's major colleges in my mind. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia... they're all too expensive and/or competitive to have been within my academic reach.

I've learned things though, from this administration.

Columbia supports oligarchy and fascism, if only by bowing to it.

Harvard does not, and apparently has principles.

@dicenbuttons @heidilifeldman Harvard doesn't have more principles than Columbia, it just has more money.
@dicenbuttons @heidilifeldman
Well #Columbia University was founded as King's College, so there's that.

@heidilifeldman

"Thou has spoken first, old man --
Get up and bar the door!"

But better late than never. Thank you, Harvard.

@heidilifeldman Harvard sends the letter Columbia should have sent.
@heidilifeldman @mattblaze Better late than never, I suppose. Slow learners are learners too.
@mattblaze @heidilifeldman they should have cc’d them on it.
@mattblaze @heidilifeldman ...yes....there are now distinct camps of the shamefully compliant and the proudly patriotic in the fields of university management and the legal profession....law enforcement, state and local governance, etc becoming clearer too....

@mattblaze

And now we wait.

Trump administration freezes $2.2 billion in grants to Harvard over campus activism

The federal government says it is freezing more than $2.2 billion in grants and contracts to Harvard University. The institution says Monday it won’t comply with a list of demands from the Trump administration as part of its campaign against antisemitism. The list at Harvard was updated Friday, and includes government and leadership reforms, as well as a requirement to institute what it calls a “merit-based” admissions and hiring policy. It also includes an audit of the study body and faculty on their views about diversity, as well as a ban on face masks which appeared to target pro-Palestinian protesters.

BOSTON (AP) — The federal government says it’s freezing more than $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts to Harvard University, after the institution said it would defy the Trump administration’s demands to limit activism on campus.

Attached: 1 image Good news! Unlike Columbia University, Harvard is not caving in to the Trump gang's attempt to snatch away their federal funds. This is on top of all the universities who already sued the Trump-run National Institute of Health. They are - pardon the all caps, I'm copying this from the legal action: ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION, ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC AND LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES, BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY, BROWN UNIVERSITY, THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, THE CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, CORNELL UNIVERSITY, THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER, and TRUSTEES OF TUFTS COLLEGE. https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/mit-tufts-and-brandeis-sue-nih-for-attempted-cut-of-indirect-research-funds/ar-AA1yP0yZ (1/n)

America - some more of this please!
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.sociall #universities has made the same statement together. Now #trump will play them out.

@heidilifeldman Excellent news! Capitulation will achieve nothing, because 47 will never stop moving the goalposts (as I’m sure Columbia will discover shortly).

Don’t know if you saw this action, which is different but related. It includes Rutgers, my husband’s — and soon to be my son’s — college. Article in the Chronicle of Higher Education; link is archive-dot-ph to circumvent the paywall.

@heidilifeldman Finally someone daring to use some fighting words.

@heidilifeldman Harvard had a whole city standing behind them when they wrote that letter. This is not just Harvard having good judgement, it's also the hard work of a number of local advocacy groups, as well as the entire City Council of Cambridge which unanimously endorsed the protest on April 12th pressuring Harvard not to give in.

Harvard protest: Cambridge council, others urge Harvard to stand up to Trump

Saturday's rally was planned in response to threats from the federal government to withhold nearly $9 billion in federal funding if Harvard doesn’t follow a broad list of demands.

@sloanlance @heidilifeldman here's an article written by Julian Vasquez Heilig, a Harvard alum now at Western Michigan University, which may be of interest to Michigan folks. It's time for faculty across institutions to ally together and strengthen their schools against these threats.

Crimson Courage: Harvard Stands Up to Political Intimidation

The storm clouds over American higher education have been gathering. What once seemed unthinkable is now common: politically motivated threats to academic autonomy, the weaponization of federal fun…

Cloaking Inequity
@heidilifeldman This is *not* a "principled stance". Harvard has the financial resources to *allow* it to tell Trump to go fuck himself. Harvard would be taking a principled stance if it were actually risking any significant losses by standing up to the Mad Emperor.

@gpilz @heidilifeldman

#Harvard HAS taken a principaled stance. Money is not the issue here. #Hur 's letter describes the First Amendment first and money second.

@heidilifeldman
That's some good news for a change!!
@heidilifeldman They have a typo in the date, on the second page...

@heidilifeldman One lawyer signing that letter is Robert K. #Hur, whom #Trump appointed as US Attorney for the District of Maryland. After that, he was Special Counsel appointed to investigate #Biden 's handling of documents.

Unlike the wimpy lawyers who bowed to Trump, Hur is the guy I want fighting for me.

Meanwhile, my college postponed the black student alumni out of fear of it being “too inclusive” for black graduates to be seen together all at once celebrating their accomplishments…

Albeit they possess the might
Nonetheless we have the will

@heidilifeldman after the shit they pulled last year, I want to believe someone in the administration had an epiphany and changed course.
@heidilifeldman Are they going to rehire Claudine Gay? No? They already caved to fascism. #FckOffHarvard
