I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff

Slight addendum, self-fact-check: yes, police were finally spotted (I think I saw 10-20 total), being generally helpful or staying out of the way. I genuinely think they did not expect these crowds. Similar past NYC mass events had the police managing the traffic + doing more active crowd control

I saw plenty of police scattered around. They were standing on the sidelines and behaving. Maybe they'll join next time if they're off duty. One can dream.

@informor.bsky.social Augusta Maine had issues marching because there were too many of us for the route. Got there early and it was crowded but as time passed there were more and more folks. It was beautiful.

@informor.bsky.social the protest in Boston also had a cordon of hands off volunteers holding side streets, inside of the BPD presence further back. I appreciate the efforts of those volunteers!
