Does anyone know of a good option for a discord "fire exit?"

An open source third party client? An open source bot that can act as a bridge between a discord server and another piece of software? Maybe a bot that can act as a bridge between a discord server and an old-school forum?

I'm in a server with some good friends, and I don't know if there are any good alternative spaces we could use (I'd love it if there were), but I hope that there is at least an option that won't require me to be reliant on the first party client.

@dragonfriend not really.

My recommendation is to #SelfHost #Mumble or go to an #IRC instead...

@kkarhan I was recommended to take another look at the matrix protocol, and there are indeed some bridges for discord. So far, this seems like the best option for me.

i would love to just get us all away from discord entirely, but my friends won't just up and leave (unless discord gets really, really bad). So I'm hoping that if the matrix/discord bridge works out, I can at least be a little less reliant on discord if my friends stay, and still be able to communicate with them.

@dragonfriend @kkarhan I'm on ond sich matrix server that had to create a discord bc *shrugs and gesticulates to the world around her* . They use a bridge with continued emphasis of using Matrix over Discord ^, but the bridge is thier compromise between the two

Bridge seems to be holding up well in our game group. Only thing I don't know is how easy moderation is in that scenario. Also, Matrix isn't seen as any more secure than other offerings . I think there might be an article on that slight downside.

@Catwoman69y2k @dragonfriend All #GroupChats that ain't fully #E2EE with #SelfCustody are inherently insecure.

@kkarhan @dragonfriend @delta Yeah. This pretty much. I wanted to make sure That I put that out there in .your response. I think some of these messengers promote security but, in many situatuons, those people don't really account for what you are saying here re: E2EE

@Catwoman69y2k @dragonfriend most importantly:

Only with #SelfCustody of all the keys, #SelfHosting of the entire infrastructure and everything being #OpenSource, one can assure (and [let it be] audit[ed] independently) that the #advertised #promises are in fact true.

Cuz not expecting @Mer__edith to break is the same level of "#TrustMeBro!" assurances as #ANØM, #EncroChat, #SkyECC, #WhatsApp etc. do in their #advetising #lies!

  • Remember: Corporations/Foundations/non-profits/... don't have a right to be silent , only individuals, and even then there are certain juristictions that have #KeyEscrow laws (i.e. #France, #Russia, #KSA, #China, #India, #UK , ...) in the books!
