📈 Since Trump was elected as the president of the USA, many people are rightfully looking for alternatives to US tech companies. The last two months, European Alternatives had an unbelievable increase in traffic, which makes me really happy. In light of that, I'll open up the analytics data of European Alternatives:
https://plausible.io/european-alternatives.eu?period=12mo
Plausible · european-alternatives.eu

Plausible is a lightweight and open-source web analytics tool. Your website data is 100% yours and the privacy of your visitors is respected.

With this insane increase in traffic, came a lot of suggestions for the site in the chat, per email and on social media. As happy as I'm about all the suggestions, I just don't have the resources to handle this amount of messages. Since I understand that the project is now more important then ever, I'll try to build a new way to contribute to the site in a more streamlined way.
I'm thinking about adding an account feature and making it possible to edit and add products that I only have to approve. Until then, I'll add a priority system in the chat tool where corrections will be prioritized. I'll post more about that in the coming days.
@european_alternatives Instead of adding a complicated accounts feature, do you have the page in e.g. a git repository? Just set the data source public and accept PRs there?
@agowa338 If I started again from scratch I would probably do it like that, but the fact is that I already have basically a small CMS based on Filament PHP: https://filamentphp.com/
So I think that with what I currently have this might be easier than to start from zero, with something like a static site builder from a git repo.
This also offers the advantage that non-technical people can suggest edits, that might be overwhelmed by creating a PR.
Filament - Accelerated Laravel development framework: admin panel, form builder, table builder and more

A collection of beautiful full-stack components for Laravel. The perfect starting point for your next app. Using Livewire, Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS.

Filament
@european_alternatives So you currently have to literally click some buttons within a WYSIWYG CMS? That sounds very painful to maintain ngl.
@european_alternatives Also on another note from experience the kind of "non-technical people" that can't figure out how to edit a text file and make a commit on e.g. GitLab or GitHub are also the very same ones that can't manage to create an account anywhere by themselves so I'm not sure if this really changes much...
@european_alternatives @agowa338 would be better to invest in ssg like Hugo. Probably also solves some security aspects.
@european_alternatives What you need is a *team*. Gather a few trustworthy people to help you with the task of evaluating suggestions. Put a good management structure in place. Look at open source projects for inspiration. Don't keep the bus factor at 1.

@european_alternatives Nordlayer is from Lithuania btw. Not US.

It’s a fantastic resource. Ty for making it.

@CargobikeDad You are right Nordlayer from Lithuania, but NordVPN isn't. Their privacy policy says that they are based in Panama: https://my.nordaccount.com/legal/terms-of-service/?nv_tri=TC_8813078014338387_1741626370260&nv_trs=1741626370260_1741626379752_1_16

@european_alternatives I've been trying to get https://www.bugsink.com/ on your site from well before Trump was elected... is there anything I can do to further the process?
Bugsink: Self-hosted Error Tracking

Bugsink is Self-hosted Error Tracking. 30 second installation, Sentry SDK compatible, scalable to millions of events per day.

@european_alternatives Ah.. one should have expected this I think ;)

Couldn't you just build an "extended form" where you can just "click and change/accept"?

One does need to build that, but it if streamlines the process.. Long live the automation option ;)

@european_alternatives even visitors from the US are looking for European alternatives
@Hieronymus Yeah I'm also surprised about that, but I guess there are also a bunch of people in the US who are tired of their big tech companies.
@european_alternatives
i recently switched from aws to another company in e.u..
@zetabeta Great to hear! Every customer counts! 🙌

@european_alternatives
what is little sad, that there is no easy alternative to android and ios.

maybe partial is fairphone, https://www.fairphone.com/ and volla phone, https://volla.online/en/index.html .

previous makes sense if user install un-googled operating system, or selects one.

We are Fairphone

We make technology with a purpose—designed to last longer, perform better, and make a real impact. And we’ve been at it for more than a decade.

@zetabeta Yes this is not easy. I'm currently researching that, maybe this is interesting for you as well: https://e.foundation/e-os/
They even sell phones with their OS already installed

A couple of alternatives to the mobile OS list, if you already didn't have them:
- Sailfish (FIN) : Complete alternative OS, but also supports Android apps. (by @jolla / https://sailfishos.org/)
- Iodé (FR) : A LineageOS fork, an Android version focused on privacy. (by @iode / https://iode.tech/)

Sailfish OS

@european_alternatives @zetabeta I've been actively using & contributing in the /e/os project for a while now & I think they kind of count as an altrnatve but not really... I'd list them as they are if they were not as janky these days but I suggest keep clear for now, maybe check these guys out (I hate them but a friend of mine
loves them).
Side: Their new device manufacturer is Turkish which isn't problem but they're sketchy from what I know.

@european_alternatives I might be a little slow, but can you summarise what exactly the graphs in that webpage are showing?
@fdrc_ff European Alternatives like many other websites on the Internet collects anonymized data about the visitors of the site. Like how many page views each site had and from which search engine these users came from. This link is to a tool that shows this data. You can filter and change the time frame, etc.
@european_alternatives
I will hopefully migrate all my stuff from AWS and DO in the next half year. Pretty fed up with these companies
@european_alternatives I've tried to move as much as I can but damn my addiction to Google.

@european_alternatives

Wooow, that's so cool! Thanks for sharing with us!

@european_alternatives FINALLY! I have tried to promote your site for years both at work and in private, with no success. The funny part is that changing to european alternatives often increase the user's privacy and security.
@european_alternatives I'm compiling a list of non-US alternatives here: https://fediscience.org/@adam_wysokinski/114026264632223299 Give us a way of adding entries to your website and I'll transfer all my findings.
Adam Wysokiński (@[email protected])

Let's compile a list of non-US based computer technologies/applications for people looking for alternatives. @european_alternatives é quello che stiamo facendo in molti. Non é facile e soprattutto non è veloce. Per noi non nativi digitali sono modifiche faticose. #BoycottUSA
@european_alternatives
If some companies in #lorient #paysdelorient or #Quimperle wants to regain power on their numerical tools, their data, they can count on @accolades to help them.
@ueeu
@european_alternatives now if you would only spell OpenStreetMap correctly (no plural s).
@european_alternatives Since I founded my own start up a couple of years ago, my first step - whenever I am looking for tool or service - is your website. Thanks for the work you do!

@european_alternatives

It's a bit comical, your website is called "european-alternatives.eu", and yet you have an X and LinkedIn account owned by Americans.

Come on, at least be consistent.
