Referring to the courageous 'Tank Man', Tiananmen Square, Beijing, 5 June 1989.

@Sustainable2050

The man in front of tanks is iconic, but did it really change anything in China? Did the CCP give way, or just (slightly) change tactics?
@ferricoxide @Sustainable2050 a symbol of resistance influences generations to come, plus itโ€™s very likely things would be much worth if there were less resistance attempt.
@Bythus @Sustainable2050

+35 years Is more than a generation. Sure, many more Chinese people are out of poverty โ€“ affluent, even โ€“ but I'd wager that, in that time, western democracies have become more like China than China has liberalized.

@ferricoxide @Sustainable2050 no, China doubled down on authoritarianism.

When the Romanians rose up in December 1989, the dictator Ceausescu decided to try to crush them, emulating what happened in China. That did not end up well for him.

@ferricoxide @Sustainable2050 Have you heard of the Great Chinese Firewall? The Chinese govt has been and remains desperate to prevent the truth being known. It is known to many who also knew the truth during the Cultural Revolution. Asking if resistance changed things immediately is absurd. What matters is what endures. There is no chance that symbol of resistance to oppression will not endure.
@samueljohnson @Sustainable2050

Immediately? Three and a half decades have passed. Getting discovered bypassing the firewall can still get you a stint in a reeducation camp. Many things can cost you your freedom of movement or worse.

That the Cybertrucks take up a lane-and-a-half is a perfect detail! ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ๐Ÿ†:chefsKiss:
@JBrianCoyle Indeed!
I'd expect them to turn right, though ;)

@Sustainable2050

That's the ticket, that's the way to do it.

@Sustainable2050 This guy is super-brave - it is likely that the Chinese tanks had working brakes.

From the news it appears that Chinese made Tesla's sometimes do not have working brakes.

AP investigates Tesla's aggressive legal strategy in China

Tesla has sued its own customers and journalists in China for defamation โ€“ and won just about every time. Elon Muskโ€™s company has pioneered an aggressive legal strategy in China and leveraged the patronage of political leaders to silence critics, reap financial rewards and limit its accountability. Thatโ€™s led some car owners to take drastic action. As concerns mount about eroding checks and balances in the U.S., Teslaโ€™s record in China shows how Musk has thrived in a system in which regulators, the media and the courts are by design intertwined.

This would be even better if it wouldn't be posted from bluesky. (corporations = corporations)

@Sustainable2050 This needs to win the Internet today,

@Sustainable2050

Let's break America
One Tesla at the time

;-)

For me it means, that our IT business is using European infrastructure services, not one of the big American ones. It's a nice bill every month that doesn't go there.

Viva la France !

@Sustainable2050
That's finest art, excellent.
@Sustainable2050 can someone explain this? I dont get it

@Sustainable2050

@shram86

For anyone too young to remember the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre and "Tank man"

This is what the #EditorialCartoon is referring to.

I had to show that to my students last semester. Watching Tiananmen Square, seeing kids just a little older than me being mowed down by the state, was formative moment in my understanding of violence.

@rjblaskiewicz you were at Tiananman Square when it went down and saw what happened?
@captainrob Nope. Saw it on TV. I was in...8th grade or so? I was appalled. Never really could approve of friendly dealing with the Chinese govt after that

@rjblaskiewicz
About 300 died, many were soldiers. The students were armed and wanted to overthrow the gov. The overwhelming majority of the country did not agree.

You can like or dislike #China, but western #propaganda is exactly what its always been. Like those ultra conservative men that loudly denounce pedophiles and then get caught being one. Always pointing to distract from the truth.

@captainrob My Chinese friends and students have been delightful. Chinese culture and history is ancient and fascinating. The great forgetting about what happened in the square is unconscionable. The kids had been sitting in the square for weeks. The kids did not deserve to be fired at.
@Sustainable2050 judging by the size of that person, I'm not sure the intended effect is going to be achieved...

Tesla has told drivers that the system does not replace a licensed driver and instructs them to keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

@Sustainable2050 cute. I think a big part of tiennimen(sp) square is that it was the children of the elites protesting and the CCP blinked , they changed their policies to be more focused on the health and happiness of the common people, I'm not sure the current crop of assholes have enough empathy to change course, they are more likely to order the tanks to drive over the protestors and then sleep at night, in a ketamine haze

@Sustainable2050 as someone said on Bluesky: 'Totally ridiculous comparison. A Cybertruck would never stop for a pedestrian'.

@Sustainable2050
And there will be another iconic picture like that in hopefully not too many years.
@Sustainable2050 Ich weiรŸ genau, wie DIESE Geschichte weitergeht. Es ist entsetzlich.
