44 million Ukrainians have been attacked by a ruthless dictator. European countries have invested 125 billion euro in defeating Russia. But forget all that, because a Fox News host says that defending democracy is not realistic, and this whole war thing is too expensive anyway.

It is time for the democratic countries to decouple from the failed US leadership and take the lead.

Russia must be defeated.

@randahl I agree. The United States as a nation is unreliable, even a failure.

Go your own way. We’re leaving ourselves behind, which is totally bonkers.

My oldest is already considering living and working in another country after graduating university.

@randahl The US has no business deciding which countries can join NATO and which cannot. This is like a toxic male making all the decisions for his girlfriend and removing her autonomy
@pooblemoo the US will no doubt leave NATO soon, the way things are going with Danger Yam and his motley crew of Russian assets in his cabinet. Maybe Ukraine can join then, after the US has (barf) allied with Russia.
@pooblemoo @randahl Actually, in a sense it does. Every NATO country has to approve new members, so any one country has a veto. The process is a bit convoluted, but explained here: https://thehill.com/policy/international/3494436-how-does-a-country-become-part-of-nato/
@pooblemoo @randahl I'm fairly sure that joining NATO requires unanimous consent of all current members, meaning that any current member may unilaterally block any prospective member from joining.
@randahl Correct. The U.S. has become an unreliable ally at best, and a tool of Putin at worst.
@randahl
The US is finished as a world leader. Stick a fork in it.
Even if we escape a durable Trump-based fascism, the rest of the world can no longer afford to rely on the US in any important way.
@n1xnx @randahl
We've been rearming steadily for years. (Note Italy is now an expeditionary force. The result of good planning and resourcing.)
Ursula Von Der Layen is sounding more and more like a stateswoman.
I think we all know what's on it's way
@n1xnx @randahl
@Tarnport
Interesting you took an interest @Tarnport we are usually art phone friends. Actually in my other life I work in defence but I don't tell anyone.
@n1xnx @randahl
Canadian business isn't going to come back post Trump. America's relationships are permanently damaged
@n1xnx the Decline and Fall of the American Empire continues apace.
@sspopovich
Sadly.
We're partying like it's 1936.
@randahl
It is time to dismantle NATO and start ETO. Our defence cannot rely on a failed state.
@sjaakkeuvelaar
Would very much like to keep allianced with Canada though...
@randahl
@helgenug @randahl
Since Leif Eriksson discovered Newfoundland Canada I would allow them in.
@sjaakkeuvelaar @randahl
I second this motion. Let's reinforce the european defence alliance and invite Ukraine asap. Forget the USA, it's gone over to the dark side. Seek cooperation with Canada and Mexico if and where possible.
@sjaakkeuvelaar @randahl but only after Rutte has been fired.

@sjaakkeuvelaar @randahl

I'm sorry but what is the ETO?

@Mor696 @randahl

If the NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but we would like a European Defence, it would become the ETO...

(yeah, you're welcome)

@sjaakkeuvelaar @randahl

You understand that that would leave out Canada & you may want to invite Australia & New Zealand.

@Mor696 @randahl

As I said: you're welcome to join...

@sjaakkeuvelaar @randahl

yes but what about Australia and New Zealand?

I'm thinking they might be a great asset as well

@randahl Russia cannot be defeated without nuclear war.

If Ukraine not getting NATO membership prevents nuclear war, then it’s a small price to pay

@thetemerian @randahl Russia is falling apart already and they aren't at war with Ukraine. So why would you need nukes to beat Russia out of Ukraine?

@randahl @Walter8100000 I have heard the same thing every week for the past 2 years and Russia has only continued to gain territory in Ukraine and loophole every sanction that was thrown at them

Don’t be surprised that I’m not buying it and that I don’t want Europe to become a nuclear wasteland. Ukraine can stay out of NATO

@thetemerian

> "Russia cannot be defeated without nuclear war.[...]"
➡️ Some hundert years ago mankind "knew", the earth was flat.

> "[...]If Ukraine not getting NATO membership prevents nuclear war, then it’s a small price to pay"
➡️ No, it isn't. Because it questions the by international law guaranteed right of free choice of alliances.
@randahl

@thetemerian @randahl Russia is being defeated by a much smaller country being supplied without even the best weapons the rest of the world has to offer, which is why they are constantly threatening nuclear war.

@thetemerian @randahl: Ukraine not getting NATO membership will precipitate the conditions under which nuclear warfare may become a reality, by promoting nuclear proliferation among other nations.

We could well see twice or even three times the number of nuclear-armed countries as a consequence, as the lesson is learnt that the only way to avoid nuclear blackmail is to be nuclear-armed oneself.

@thetemerian @randahl

Not necessary to defeat Russia, it's enough to push them back. If all EU countries join their forces it is possible. Nuclear war is of course no option for both sides.

@randahl Reality is so strange, that utterly crazy thing about NATO surviving without the USA is less and less crazy every single day.

Sorry, @randahl but we in Europe have not invested 125 billion euro in Ukrainian defence. We sent mostly existing old equipment, which was VALUED at €100+ billion.

European defence investment remains ridiculously low for the threat we face, now doubled up by American occupation threats and poss withdrawal from NATO.

I have known for long that European politicians have been asleep at the wheel but as we mark 3 years of full scale war, we're about to find out just how much that's been the case.

@joaocosta Yes we have.

@randahl

I know, but it's not what it actually cost. As far as I know, when allies talk about the billions worth of equipment we contributed it's either the value of old stock (most of which was going to be scrapped anyway) or the cost of purchasing new equipment for ourselves (which isn't going to Ukraine). I know it all sounds very grand, but Ukraine hasn't received all that money, or the equipment it got wasn't worth that either... 🫤

@randahl Hegseth's comments were right out of Putin's playbook and mirrored his goals in the war. It's so clear, but the media will look right past that fact and will not comment on it.
@randahl The UK needs to choose between being shafted by Trump or allying with the EU. Time for our silly little nation to snap out of it's shit.
@randahl Wow Hegseth is a Trump Thug unfit for that position how embarrassing I apologize for our country sad !

@randahl
"Too expensive", yet Biden only provided $65 billion in military aid to Ukraine while Trump now wants to "cash in" on all that aid by taking $500 billion worth of Ukraine's rare earth minerals for himself, while he sits in meetings with Putin.

The US is now the global war machine, and Trump expects all the spoils and profits of war for himself.

He's giving Russia Crimea+ and expects minerals in return. He's giving Israel the West Bank and taking Gaza in return, divvying up the world.

@randahl let's stop pretending NATO and NORAD aren't dead and get to work establishing a new defense treaty already.

@randahl

Exactly, the USA are led by donkeys…

Shame on these traitors.

@randahl - It is a day full of shame for the European Union. The EU is a small gray mouse that must passively watch as a bully from the US sells out the future of a European country as a commodity quit-pro-quo to Putin.
The EU stood by and looked at it. How humiliating must this be for Ursula.
@randahl well if it comes to choosing Ukraine or USA as NATO members forgive me if I prefer Ukraine
@randahl perhaps the rest of NATO needs to rescind the membership of the USA. After all if they aren't going to support the rest of NATO the they are a hindrance.

@randahl

I think it may be time for NATO to reconsider America's participation in NATO for a few years. And NATO needs to go head to head with Russia in Ukraine.

@randahl @rysiek Considering USA is courting (or directly heading for) fascism, their lack of care for democracy is unsurprising.
@randahl @cstross So lets just kick the USA out of NATO.
@cyberspice @randahl Do that, and the Trumpenführer *will* sign a treaty of alliance with Putin as soon as he can. Meanwhile, if Russia attacks Europe while the USA is in NATO, the USA is at least in theory dragged into a war with Russia. Which if nothing else must be a slight deterrent to Putin. (Trump might repudiate NATO if that happens … but if so, he's just torched EVERY international treaty and alliance. And that would not be good for the USA, so hopefully his own party would stop him.)
@cyberspice @randahl I know hoping for the Republicans to put a brake on Trump is a forlorn hope, BUT maybe if what's at stake was their own lives in a nuclear war …?
@cstross @randahl I don’t think they have any concept of having their own safety within the US threatened. That’s why Sept 11 was so shocking. Before then they had a handful of bombs during WW2 on the west coast. Too used to fighting wars at arms length. So its going to be hard for them to empathise…
@cstross @cyberspice @randahl they want their Rapture, they are not rational actors. 😞
@Lazarou @cstross @cyberspice @randahl They imagine themselves as the righteous saved in Revelations, watching the unrighteous burn. Scary, scary people.
@cstross @cyberspice @randahl well at least then we Europeans then know who is who. #glassthekremlin #urenco
