I remember when people would tell me, you have to buy software from the large software companies or it will probably break and be terrible.

Today, it’s like, Google property? Microsoft invested? V.v.sus. The software lives in a self-hosted machine named for a pun on some obscure kink, the developer is a furry, the logo is two furries, it’s gpl’ed and if you do five minutes of due diligence you’re going to see all of their politics and most of their butt? I will trust this software with my life.

@mhoye is this why i haven't had the energy to code OSS lately? Too self-conscious of my butt?
@kboyd @mhoye
you want me to tell you if you should be worried about your arse?
@kboyd @mhoye I'm sure there is nothing to worry about, since ACAB (all behinds are beautiful)
@jollysea @mhoye cabooses*
@kboyd @mhoye yeah, sorry, that was the word I was looking for 😅
@mhoye And if it's audio/video then it's anime avatars instead (which could still be quite furry).
@mhoye This is very funny, and so true! A whole lot of the software I use regularly is from vanishingly small teams and even individuals, because "the big stuff" has all turned to hot garbage.
@mhoye @becomethewaifu The funny thing is that the large companies' software never really was much good.

It was just less obviously garbage and learning enough context to truly grasp its quality (or lack thereof) was harder (particularly pre-internet (previous to practical internet access is pre-internet, that was up to early 2000s for some places)).
@mhoye difference here: that software is transparent and not trying to scam you, while Google and MS are
@mhoye You say that like its a bad thing.
@mhoye @aparrish I think for me it depends what those politics end up being, but that just makes me feel better about this situation. Otherwise, very yes.
@mhoye Nobody ever got laid for buying IBM?
@ildiavolorosso that’s a great way to phrase it, ngl.
@mhoye I turned into this about 2 years ago. The outside world started to smell funny. :)
@mhoye Can it somehow be bought by Broadcom or Oracle? If so, never rely on it in any way.
@maswan @mhoye
I am surprised nobody has mentioned Cisco. They have made hardware so difficult to deploy with all their licensing BS that I'm now looking at alternatives such as #wireguard and #StrongSwan for VPN solutions.

@nickb333 @maswan @mhoye

Just wish there was good FOSS firmware for the ONIE capable switches.

The per port and pay as you grow licensing is infuriating on the big name vendors switches.

@mhoye I grew up in the #opensource software community, so I never bought into this. Sure, I switched to Chrome from #Firefox (which was already eroding Microsoft's grasp on the browser market) because it had better #UX (Unfortunately, a problem for most #oss) and it was still equal to Firefox in almost every other way but, I was still looking forward to the day when Firefox would be good enough (at UX) to win me over.

I'll still take the #FLOSS over proprietary any day if iteets my needs.

@mhoye Google software and Microsoft software might work

But who does it work for? Hmmm

@mhoye - I will evaluate it more carefully before lending it a book, though.
@mhoye ahh, i remember the era when i was like "there… instead of self-hosting it [which will break when my ubuntu vps breaks] it is hosted by Google's services… now it will simply last forever… surely Google will never discontinue a service or introduce a totally different pricing scheme years after i lock in to using them"
@mcc we were so young.
@mhoye I wish my company thought that way. Recently an addon was banned because our company firewall blocked the developers website and IT Security could therefore not figure out their personal details.
Probably because there was some discussion of sex work on this person's blog 🤦‍♂️
I appealed the decision though 😅

@mhoye
"buy software from the large software companies or it will probably break and be terrible."

Is just "nobody got fired for buying IBM" once IBM themselves became basically irrelevant.

@mhoye a well-formed tuchas is critical to writing reliable code. that and cat ears
@mhoye same energy (even 25y ago, I was laughing at the people daring to try to sell me tech from IBM, Apple, Oracle or MS at the time. OK, there was a special place for Sun, but I think they were secretly alien in disguise, not sure what to do with the corporate management capture and trying very hard to fail and not succeeding for years and years)
@mhoye this is accurate to the point of near physical pain
@mhoye There are two kinds of software programs: Those developed to generate revenue by extracting value from the users, and those developed to solve problems that make people's lives easier/better.
