@KarenDorman
The entire weekend if at all possible
@KarenDorman Nah. Every single business knows that you will still spend the money you would have spent that day, just at a later date. They don't care. Now if you want to stop buying from large corporate entities permanently, that's another thing. Stopping for one day is just masturbation.
@farbel
Then you might consider to support it as a way to encourage the participants. So they continue to learn and become better activists.

@KarenDorman @farbel

Agreed. When gas prices at the pump were insanely high social media pushed for a one day boycott. Such a thing would not and did not bring down prices.

BUT, a one day shopping boycott would send a strong message to the big retailers. It wouldn't lower prices. It would rattle cages. It would be the start of the public spending their money elsewhere and decreasing their spending overall. It could be a signal a public willing to make changes.

@MyWoolyMastadon @KarenDorman Buy Nothing Day happens every year. Show me evidence that it has ever achieved a single thing. Economics 101 tells you that the only thing that brings down prices and changes behavior is an actual change in demand. Delaying demand for a day does nothing. What we need is to elect officials who strengthen and enforce monopoly laws. Of course, that requires paying attention and voting, which half of America appears incapable of.

@farbel @KarenDorman

Agreed with what you say. One day doesn't change the financials.

It does start a conversation.

If a person is inclined, one day will make them think about where they spend their money. If we're lucky that one day can make them consider who they cast their vote for in the future.

One day isn't much. In the scheme of a year it's nothing.

But one day and others strung out behind it can spark a change that hopefully sticks.

@farbel @KarenDorman

Besides, stupid and futile gestures done with passion are some of the stuff that makes for great legends.

@farbel @KarenDorman or by pausing one day we might realize we never needed it at all
@farbel @KarenDorman Well you'd know all about that, huh.
@ApostateEnglishman @KarenDorman Masturbation? sure. Are you 12?

@farbel @KarenDorman I was pointing out that your defeatist attitude was itself, masturbatory.

If we're to oppose fascism, we need to go full spectrum on it. Boycots, general strikes, protests, direct actions, subversion, sabotage, the works. And do you know what? It doesn't matter if no single one of these strategies is particularly effective on its own.

If you want to help, try making your own, constructive suggestions instead of dumping on those who are at least trying to do *something*.

@ApostateEnglishman @KarenDorman My suggestion, for Americans, is get your lazy, narcissitic asses out and vote next time, and not for a third party. It is people not showing up in 2016 and 2024 that got us here. I don't want to hear any bullshit excuses either. There was a clear choice both times. You Brits have your own problems. Maybe deal with them before meddling over here.

@farbel @KarenDorman We're a vassal state of the USA, hence the so-called "special relationship". It impacts us directly if our spineless PM decides, for example, to codify our trade relations, and our food markets are then flooded with dangerously unhealthy food that starts a bird flu epidemic. Or we support the USA in annexing allied territories or ethnically cleansing Gaza.

Sorry guy, but we have a dog in this fight. And spending your energy shouting at non-voters isn't helping anyone.

@ApostateEnglishman @KarenDorman If you really want to get down ad dirty, which is about as pointless as you trying to tell me what to do, The UK started absolutely every problem in the world today. You created the Middle East, You created Myanmar, You created India/Pakistan, You created us.

@farbel @KarenDorman Sure, but pointlessly raging about historic grievances doesn't provide constructive solutions in the present, does it? You're literally talking about everyone voting next time, when it's far from clear there'll even be a next time. There's a coup underway in the US, and whinging about low Democratic turnout last year isn't going stop it.

Also, I'm *Apostate* Englishman for a reason. I loathe the political and security establishment of this country.

Let's see what this old brain can do... If you haven't done so already, acquaint yourself with the UKUSA agreement of 1946, Five Eyes (FVEY) - or probably 14 eyes now, due to participation of "third countries" such as Germany, Italy, Sweden. It's the most advanced global bulk collection operation ever, having been in construction for over 70 years. The Stasi on steroids. The infrastructure - a vast network of cable taps, signals stations etc. - is global, and used to be codenamed ECHELON. 1/4

@ApostateEnglishman @KarenDorman Yeah, the word coup gets thrown around a lot, most ly by people who don't understand its definition. What is going on is a minority of the US electorate elected a complete asshole who also happens to be ignorant, and he and his handlers are pushing every envelope to see how much they can get away with. It remains to be seen how much that will be. I suspect it will be far less than all the Chicken Littles are screaming. The tragedy is the innocents who will suffer
@farbel How much have you been following? We've got a president making unprecedented power grabs (overriding a Constitutional amendment via memo?) and an unelected, unvetted yahoo claiming unlimited power, "deleting" federal agencies established by statute and accessing data that even presidents aren't usually allowed. None of this is legal or legally binding, except there's no one enforcing the law. The Constitution is toast. If this is not a coup, what is it?
@earthtoneone He has thrown a lot of shit at the wall. Most of it is being chanllenged legally. Judges have already blocked a number of things. Of course, he could refuse to obey, ot the Supreme Court could rule for him a LONG way down the road, but this is not the overthrow of a duly elected government. That is what a coup is. It is fucked up, and he is going to do a lot of damage, and people are already dying from his actions, but it is far from a done deal. It has been three weeks.

@farbel @KarenDorman I use them to look at what I've purchased over the last year and look for those things elsewhere. I found a mom & pop hardware store that way about 8 years ago. Pickin's are gettin' slim.

I also found the Android app Buycott, but I wasn't buying anthing on there.

It can be a stair step, not just a notch.

@farbel @KarenDorman find your farmers markets; know and become a producer not just a consumer.
@KatLS @KarenDorman I live in Mexico. I buy everything at a market. That doesn't make me a producer, though. Growing my own herbs does, I guess. Farmers markets in the United States are only affordable to the well-off. Here, they are cheaper than the grocery.
@KarenDorman what message are you trying to send?
@KarenDorman
Grass roots. From the ground up.
@KarenDorman Is this a Canada-only action?
@LaChasseuse
Hi. I think it's primarily American. I saw it a few times, but it didn't have #AltText so I added it and reposted.
@KarenDorman What exactly are you guys protesting /gq

@KarenDorman Hi Karen, thanks for your efforts, and thanks for adding alt text to your Propoganda image. Hey, a quick thought, I think it would be great if when we create art for Propoganda purposes, we do things to encourage it's use freely like uploading it to Wikimedia.org and marking it CC-0 free to use by all, and maybe including in the bottom of the image and/or in the alt text, some indicatin that it is free to use ,public domain. It's quick and easy to setup an account at Wikipedia and upload stuff.

https://commons.wikimedia.org

if you search there for Technogourmet you'll find the few things I have put up recently.

Anyay, just some thoughts. #Solidarity

@KarenDorman if a good fraction of population make it all year round and stop buying things that you do not absolutely need and you'll get rid of them.
@KarenDorman I think this only works when people decide to live *without* whatever they think of buying that day, otherwise this will just shift sales to the days *around* that day, which is rather useless. How about a day or week of focusing on alternatives to those things? I bet that's where most people give up... (partly because it's often too expensive...)

@KarenDorman @codinghorror

What's the point? What's the goal?

What is the message you want to be heard?

@KarenDorman At least the tags on this post imply which nation this applies to.
@KarenDorman We've already started awhile back. I have boycott notices in my free community library too.

Not like I didn't just throw away a caserole dish made in the 80's that tests positive for lead.
Corps existbto commit fraud. Otherwise they would be worker owned and operated services.

don't forget to call in to work sick.
labor is actually worth more than money. The exchange rate is just aweful.

Hecklers; Do you need to make yourself a snack maybe? Water? Hug?
Maybe go heckle on truth-is-lies or threads or bluesky something?
Like, if obstruction is what you're good at, fine -- but maybe point it at the harmers instead of the helpers?
good talk. thanks, buckeroos.

Trump administration orders consumer protection agency to stop work, closes building

The Trump administration has ordered the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop nearly all its work, effectively shutting down the agency that was created to protect consumers after the 2008 financial crisis and subprime mortgage-lending scandal. Russell Vought is the newly installed director of the Office of Management and Budget. Vought directed the CFPB in a Saturday night email to stop work on proposed rules, to suspend the effective dates on any rules that were finalized but not yet effective, and to stop investigative work and not begin any new investigations. The agency has been a target of conservatives since President Barack Obama created it following the 2007-2008 financial crisis.

@KarenDorman

Will boost, to hope citizens of the former United States will stop buying anything from the 28th February. They need to make the US ungovernable.

Of course, Canadians will keep buying Canadian goods and entirely boycotting goods from the former United States of America.

@KarenDorman Compared to a one-week general strike, which would be the logical step, this is pretty weak.

And a total, permanent Boycott of ALL the businesses owned by the collaborator/enabler Billionaires involved.

Think big, folks.

@KarenDorman

y'all remember the Reddit blackout?

y'all remember how well that worked?
