National "50 States" anti-Trump protest planned for Feb 5: What to know

There is a social media following creating protests at state capitols across the country on Wednesday.

Newsweek
@cynblogger @randahl @MontyRunner I've never been to a protest before, anything I should be sure to bring?

@Trolley_Problem @cynblogger @randahl @MontyRunner

Lots, depending on the state and likelihood of state violence.
Certainly water, high calorie snacks, maybe a burner phone loaded with key phone numbers & emails (emergency contacts, attorney,...) instead of your regular phone with lots of sensitive data.
Warm layers of clothing (more or less depending on where you live.
Government ID, medical insurance, a bit of cash, 1 credit card (or not ID if you want to make it difficult for the man).

@randahl @[email protected]

He's untouchable, remember? So nothing changes, no matter how many people flood the street, which is sad. And after his term a court will state that he's too old to be prosecuted. I root for them though.

Dems should have gone voting. And i'm pi**ed that this clown gets so much media attention, even here in Europe. Half the news pages are full of his sh*t and they can't report fast enough. Even more disgusting.

I want one week without the name Trump anywhere.

@randahl @MontyRunner For what it's worth there's a lot of well justified suspicion about this protest.
For example: https://cathode.church/@rabbit/113941419632144957
Personally, I think it is so poorly organized that even if it's legit it's still going to be counterproductive because the protests in most states will be so small that people will think they're jokes.

@jik @randahl @MontyRunner Yes, this immediately attracted my attention too. Unclear (intentionally?) who is behind it, certainly not those you would expect like Indivisible. Could easily be a MAGA honey trap. Or even russkies
@randahl @MontyRunner There are some questions about this protest. To cite one source as an example, it's very difficult to identify actual organizers. Protest is still a right here, but caution has been advised. (As a former organizer and party official myself, I've been there, literally and figuratively...exercising awareness in a protest in the U.S. has always been advisable.)
@randahl
It *is* awesome. And I wonder how long it will be before the idea of martial law is floated in the White House.

@randahl @MontyRunner
That article itself is fishy. I mean, I know it's Newsweek, but it just sounds off. Taken from some sort of press release, or just LLM?
@[email protected] @[email protected] Who is organizing this? I posted promo for it but a lot of people commented sceptically. My guess is that it is just a group of people with not a lot of experience started posting to just do it and it caught on

@markwyner @JDGeoShack this "5050" series of protests is fake. It's being pushed out by trolls and bots.

This Reddit post explains, point by point, how you can recognize its fakeness.

Anytime you're planning to attend a local protest, rally, or action, check with established trusted local organizers first. Make sure there are permits and safety measures in place.

Information about Maine's rally for Wednesday Feb 5th in Augusta

Okay, so yesterday I posted a query about this "fifty capitols fifty marches" planned for Wednesday Feb 5th in Augusta. I thank those who provided me with clues as to what is happening, because they led me to figure out who was behind this effort....

Daily Kos

@randahl

At some point and this pace of measures he will face discussion on impeachment soon…

Charles Koch's audacious new $5 billion political scheme

Billionaire Charles Koch, who will turn 88 on November 1, is funneling his wealth into two secretive organizations that can continue his right-wing political advocacy for years.

If people are at all concerned about who is organizing these protests and whether or not they are legitimate, they can instead join Indivisible groups across the country who have organized visits to and protests at US Senate offices across the country on Wednesday and Thursday.

Welcome to the Resistance, Newsweek!

@randahl

Wonderful!
Ah, how good is this?! 💖

And I really appreciate that you mention your sources 😊 like in this case, @MontyRunner

@randahl @MontyRunner

I'm involved in my local 50501 protest. It's being left up to the state/location to be organized on its own. I wouldn't assume it's a trap but I would also make sure you feel comfortable with who is running it. In many cities, established organizations have stepped up to run it. Those names aren't being publicly shared because a lot of conversation is on Signal. For many places it hasn't been intentional. I encourage everyone to look into their local one if interested and vet it out and get involved!!

@randahl @[email protected] Let’s give that protest some more loving:

@randahl @MontyRunner idk these organizers and I do not trust a protest without knowing who is doing it, what they intend to accomplish, and what protections are in place for the protesters.

Choosing it for a wednesday? With less than a week to prepare? This reeks of deliberate undercutting + opportunity for bad actors to false flag attack.

I have a _really_ bad feeling about this.

Anti-Trump Protests Break Out at State Capitols Across the Country

Protesters gathered nationwide to protest Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

The New Republic

@peterjriley2024 @randahl @MontyRunner
Not a word about it on MSNBC this afternoon, other than the odd congressional soundbite at USAID.

eta: Finally Rachel Maddow brought them up.

@Joe_Hill @randahl @[email protected]

On the 5th of February, protests were held in state capitals, aimed at being in ALL state capitals against the Trump/Musk financial and data coup. One of these was held in #Tallahassee, FL (see video)

Note that the #Musk protests at least in DC and probably everywhere have been turning out people you do NOT normally see at protests!
When the general public starts turning out in the street, this troubles a policy-or a ruler.

Protesters in cities across the US rally against Trump's policies, Project 2025 and Elon Musk

Demonstrators have gathered in cities across the U.S. to protest the Trump administration’s early actions. They're decrying everything from the president’s immigration crackdown to his rollback of transgender rights and a proposal to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Protesters in Philadelphia and at state capitols in Minnesota, Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana and beyond on Wednesday waved signs denouncing President Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk and the hard-right playbook for American government and society called Project 2025. The protests were a result of a movement that has organized online under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day.
