Itโ€™s pretty insane just how much data you can pull out of an unmodified #canon5dmarkiv sensor shooting #astrophotography. The fact I was balanced on a very slippery rock with my tripod in waist deep water at 3am with my tracking mount after driving 8 hours to shoot this feels like it deserves some credit.

#photography folks, whatโ€™s the dumbest setup youโ€™ve used for the shot?

@benalldridge wow ๐Ÿคฉ
@miranda_blue some of the darkest skies on earth! Itโ€™s pretty spectacular ๐Ÿ˜Š
@benalldridge Okay, I was wondering where it was taken, but I just had a look at your profile and it makes sense. You sure live in a beautiful place and amazing for photography, but you make the best of it. Thanks for sharing!
@miranda_blue yes I forgot to include that โ€“ Binalong Bay in Tasmania ๐Ÿ˜Š
@benalldridge
You are right, it deserves a lot of credit.
@benalldridge a raspberry pi and camera taped to a bit of card?

Attached: 1 image @[email protected] @[email protected] I'm wok, and I've been reworking the knife after I found a couple of cracks and tried to patch them with resin, only for the uv lamp to fall on it. Smothered it in wood filler and basically started again. Also been playing with the sky watcher. #makersHour

@wokstation low tech works for me ๐Ÿ˜Š

@benalldridge @bespacific OK now I want to see the front-facing cameraโ€˜s image haha

The story of how the magic trick is performed is just as impressive as the magic itself

@whophd @bespacific sadly I didnโ€™t get any, but you can imagine a very fat man doing a crouching tiger pose with a very shaky tripod for flavour ๐Ÿ˜‚
@benalldridge @bespacific Iโ€™ll allow it if you just CREATE an image of โ€œthe photographerโ€ that you wish for people to believe, as they stroll past your gallery installation โ€ฆ and pick any actor if you like!
@benalldridge @pieceofthepie Outstanding and beautiful! The 5DIV is such an impressive piece of kit.
@brunty @pieceofthepie I bought an ฮฑ7III to replace it back in 2020 after I damaged it for the second timeโ€ฆ itโ€™s still in my kit ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@benalldridge @pieceofthepie I nearly went Sony when I bought my first mirrorless last year and took things more seriously, but stuck with Canon and bought an R6II.
@brunty @pieceofthepie the R6II is a great body! It was high on my list of bodies to grab this upgrade round.

@benalldridge That is an absolutely amazing shot. One of my photography goals is to take a good photo of the milky way. I've come close, but none of them pop quite like your photo here. Amazing!

Did you need any post processing?

@quixoticgeek this answer isnโ€™t as straightforward as youโ€™d think. The answer is yes this takes a lot of work, but not the ways youโ€™d think. Out of the camera it was about 90% of the way there, what I do in Photoshop is mostly just refinement ๐Ÿ˜Š
@benalldridge Its a fun shot! If I use this as background in my artwork, how would I go about getting your permission? ๐Ÿ˜Š
@dilmandila just pop me a message on my contact form (https://benjaminalldridge.com/contact) and we can go from there! Iโ€™m usually pretty chill with that sort of thing ๐Ÿ˜Š

@benalldridge Thanks! Will do once I'm ready
@benalldridge Congrats ! Definitely worth the effort. Reflection, rocks and tree provide context and perspective to make it a hard to forget photograph.

@benalldridge Wonderful photo. Bravo!

Worth all the effort it took to capture.

@benalldridge truly spectacular! It must have been amazing (besides the wading and slipperiness) that night. Thanks for the capture and sharing!
@benalldridge My dumbest setup for the shot has to have been the time I leant across/over a waist high fence on the railway at a foot crossing on a bend to catch a shot of a train without a hedge in the shot (I was fully in a position of safety at no risk *whatsoever* to me or anyone else at all times).
@Liaely fences are suggestions ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@benalldridge Riding 40 miles on my bike with panniers full of 4x5 gear--Speed Graphic, tripod, film holders, meter, the works. It was really the ride back that almost killed me.
@maccruiskeen anybody that does anything with big gear has my immediate respect.

@benalldridge got one of my favourite lightning photos by propping my camera on a handrail support and kinda tying the camera to the handrail with the strap

Attached: 4 images Tomorrow I'll send away my #Canon EOS R and #Fujifilm X-E4 in exchange for a new (used) Canon EOS R5. It feels weird. My EOS R has been my inseparable companion for over 5 years now, but I was feeling some of the limitations of the R body. I loved the SOOC photos from my Fuji (hated the AF, though) but I haven't used it much lately. I'll add some photos that were important for me during these years. @zompetto well captured ๐Ÿ˜Š I do a lot of storm photos too

@benalldridge Binoculars into a no-lens SLR camera, held together with hope.

Maybe it didn't work, I can't remember. I was going for very high zoom, and I think I ended up using a 200mm lens also, for a ridiculous telephoto zoom, with the binoculars as a light bucket.

Resolution at the centre was tack-sharp, but fell off uselessly within 60% of the frame.

I was experimenting with photographing distant landscape features, and succeeded in capturing distant landmarks from viewpoints.

@benalldridge are you willing to reveal how you captured the foreground without motion blur while using a tracking mount?
@lydiafacts a single frame before I turned the tracker on ๐Ÿ˜Š Iโ€™ve since learned better ways, but it worked alright for the purpose.
@benalldridge by far the dumbest setup would be the time I climbed out onto a small logjam to shoot upstream in Grand Teton NP. Not only was it precarious, but one log shiftingโ€ฆ bye bye me.
@michaelrung if youโ€™re not putting yourself in physical; impending danger, whatโ€™s the point?
@benalldridge That's an incredible shot. I've got the same exact model of DSLR and I've obviously not scratched the surface of what's possible.
@coolpuppy I reckon theyโ€™re the second best DSLR ever made.
Wooooow impresionante
@benalldridge wow, that's an amazing picture well done!

@benalldridge is this the full res image?

Its gorgeous.

@benalldridge Wow, it was filmed there, very magical

@benalldridge I *can* say that I've lain on cold, hard stone tiles on my back with fellow tourists passing by giving me weird looks as I try to get the entire cathedral in one shot. But like, who hasn't? ๐Ÿ˜†

My real reason for commenting though is that I love photos like yours that remind me of just how big the galaxy is (let alone the universe). So, so many stars we never see because of our own artificial light. So much more out there than we can possibly imagine.
