It’s interesting how all the people who adored Musk as recently as 3 years ago now say they don’t recognize the guy. I know two such people personally and now I hear that Grimes is shocked, shocked, shocked by his behavior. I have never been a good judge of character but I saw Musk coming 10 years ago. Damn, how dumb can smart people be?
@asymco insane resume tho, Starlink, SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink
@chimoo @asymco Perhaps it shouldn’t all be credited to him? Perhaps he hired the right people to do amazing work, but the ideas, effort and commitment were their own?
@chimoo Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin, Idi Amin all had insane resumes. That is not the measure of the man.
@asymco when you’re close to something and seeing it on a hourly basis it is harder to notice the change. From the outside, your sample rate is slower. Maybe you see something about the person every month or week - it’s much easier to see that change at that rate.
@pixel From where I stand there was no change.
@asymco I do feel like a lot of people started to change their opinion of him after the 2018 Thai soccer team rescue, especially if they were never a super fan of him
@chasedmartin @asymco until then it was the cultivated image, guest spot on Big Bang Theory and so on. Once we got the chance to see the man behind the facade he saw the real man
@bgrinter @chasedmartin If you paid attention the dishonesty and vileness was evident from the very beginning. Usually it takes only one lie to lose trust. After a thousand, it's a badge of honor. Same with murder.
@asymco you should have stopped him then!

@asymco

same for me and i was one of the few who saw through lance armstrong immediately

i have a highly developed bullshit and psychopath detector

@asymco Three years I didn't even know who Elon Musk is
@asymco share the sentiment (made jokes about musk a decade ago that weren't appreciated) but then again, it invokes all kinds of satisfied "I told you so" attitudes which I really dislike, even when feeling them myself. I do admit that I didn't see the full fascist turn as it is evident since some years now btw. The real shocker is realizing how many people go along now .... Loyalists to power, hoping to get a share
@asymco - Musk was a featured speaker at the American Geophysical Union meeting nine years ago in California. Jerry Brown had the same spot a few years later. There was a near consensus among the scientists that the entrepreneur was a disrespectful salesman whereas the politician was an earnest intellectual doing what he could do make the world a better place.
@asymco People who cared about labor issues knew what kind of person he was, because he treated workers badly.
@asymco I actively ignored the man until 2016, after which point I actively hated him.
@asymco I think a lot of people saw what they wanted to see and dismissed the things they didn’t want to see or believe
@asymco @glennf At the latest once fatality and worker accident rates at Tesla were revealed everyone should have seen a problem with Elon.

@asymco

… or how smart people could be, so smart that dumb people think that the smarties are dumb …
