My start-up's business model is taking one million euro from every billionaire, every year. If this is made illegal this whole industry will die.
Ah that’s what we were missing, more comments per PR, phew

My business model of selling tours of people's homes doesn't work if I have to get their consent.
@kf hopefully I’m queueing up some clapback, as I’m starting a program myself and need some familiar voices to help me stay the course
"Much of the essence of building a program is in fact the debugging of the specification." β€” Fred Brooks

I’m officially done with takes on AI beginning β€œEthical concerns aside…”.

No! Stop right there.

Ethical concerns front and center. First thing. Let’s get this out of the way and then see if thre is anything left worth talking about.

Ethics is the formalisation of how we are treating one another as human beings and how we relate to the world around us.

It is *impossible* to put ethics aside.

What you mean is β€œI don’t want to apologise for my greed and selfishness.”

Say that first.

I don't want an 'AI assisted life'.

I want trees, forests, wild plants and animals. I want to eat good food produced locally, with minimal environmental impact. I want a free society that works for everyone but especially those in need, not just a few billionaires. I want a life full of magic and wonder at the natural world. I want to live a good life alongside every living thing on the planet.

I do not want AI slop.

@norootcause I love that paper, and somewhere saw in an abstract or summary about it this quote:

"A program is not its source code. A program is a shared mental construct that lives in the minds of the people who work on it. If you lose the people, you lose the program."

Powerful stuff, and very true.

With the Industrial Revolution, they exploited our natural resources and poisoned our environments.

With the rise of advertising, they contaminated our mental and social spaces to insist and persuade that we were alone and not enough.

The next frontier is to fragment and eradicate the relational commons, our prized human relationships, the basis of all society.

You could see a smokestack, and be offended by a billboard - we can’t trace an imperceptible synthetic shift to eradicate human worth

Hypothesis: Any excess time you spend with AI/LLMs that could have otherwise been devoted to humans makes you a worse human being

Hinging on β€œexcess,” this intersects several topics:
- zero-sum displacement
- opportunity cost threshold
- diminishing returns
- psychological dependency
- skill(s) atrophy
- values alignment
- balance disruption

For corporations to lead such a dialogue is hazardous at best. They have no care whatsoever for natural beauty, creativity, autonomy or human flourishing.
