Ya know, I think it’s interesting that as soon as Greta Thunberg started espousing anti-capitalist and anti-colonial sentiment, the media coverage of her deeds dropped sharply.

The solution to climate change is to dismantle what causes it, and that’s the exploitation of developing countries by wealthier ones; and the exploitation of our resources to make line go up

Once Ms Thunberg moved on from “climate change is bad and we should do something” to “climate change is bad and THIS is what we should be doing”, suddenly the media isn’t a big fan of activism

@yassie_j "school kid skips school" gets more clicks

@yassie_j

Hélder Câmara knows the feeling. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist”

@yassie_j
The cause of climate change and environmental degradation is money. So long as we cling to this Bronze Age, faith based method of valuation, we will continue to kill everything for one more coin.

@yassie_j I remember when she started I was very pessimistic, like "poor girl, they are pretending to listen to her by inviting her to everything and shut down her movement, I hope she is smarter than that but she's too young".

And then she went from "the system is broken and must be fixed" to "the system is working exactly as intended and must be destroyed" in like 1/4 of the time it took most of us to understand it.

@yassie_j They were hoping her activism would give permission to the status quo to keep status quoing but she’s not having any of their BS.
@yassie_j
similar thing with Helen Keller
one she found out that poor workers were more likely to become blind and/or deaf, she kinda got angry about the system that makes so many people poor and forces everyone to work

This is ALSO true of Malala Yousafzai, who was celebrated as a champion for the education of girls and women worldwide. She became an icon because she almost sacrificed herself for doing something that should be common for any girl to do.

However, you will NEVER hear about the fact that Ms Yousafzai has used her international platform to speak out against global poverty, the chilling horror of US drone strikes, and against capitalism. In fact, she herself is aware of how the media in the west portrays her, saying that she is “no western puppet”.

What the media will not tell you is that Malala is a full-blown socialist, having said “I am convinced Socialism is the only answer and I urge all comrades to take this struggle to a victorious conclusion. Only this will free us from the chains of bigotry and exploitation”.

I think Malala’s case is much more disgraceful, because we have white, westerners using her to promote “western ideals”, like some kind of modern-day version of the “noble savage” trope.
Speaking in favour of education and non-violence gets you accolades from the western corporate media. Speaking about how to ensure everyone gets education and doesn’t have to face violence from US drone strikes gets you silence.
@[email protected] the kids grew up and the people heard what they wanted to hear, so they stop being the spokepersons of a cause and they give them a Nobel Prize for peace as a thank you

@yassie_j Reminds me of Martin Luther King. The story we hear today is so fucking whitewashed and stripped of anything that might cause offense to the capitalist hellhole we built for ourselves it's a disgrace to his legacy.

He was a socialist fighting for a guaranteed livable state income for everyone to eradicate poverty. He was assassinated when planning a march on Washington for that cause.

The whitewashed version of his story ends at the Civil Rights Act. It's laughably transparant, yet I doubt many Americans know. The whitewashing has been institutional and extremely thorough.

@thomholwerda @yassie_j

Near as my gradeschool teachers taught it, the meek and mild MLK died for my ancestors' sins like a Civil Rights Jesus and now all us white folks are cleansed of racism. /s

@thomholwerda @yassie_j 100%. The so-called liberal media prefers its heroes as vague icons of bravery.
@giantspecks @thomholwerda @yassie_j I mean, that media is liberal, neoliberal to be exact, they’re not secretly nazis or something
@thomholwerda @yassie_j was listening to some of his later speeches this past MLK day and yeah, he really hammered on that, he drew bright red lines connecting racial injustice, economic injustice, imperialism abroad and repression and austerity domestically. he was reaching out and building coalitions. and it's very clear now that that was why they felt they had to kill him!
@thomholwerda @yassie_j You see something incredibly similar with Helen Keller, the socialist who was whitewashed into an Inspirational Story™ about Overcoming Disability™. In fact, you see Lenin describe exactly this phenomenon at the beginning of The State and Revolution - which has itself fallen victim to that phenomenon, since nobody ever attributes the quote or leaves in the language about Marx and Marxism.

The State and Revolution — Chapter 1

@[email protected] did you know hellen Keller was an outspoken socialist?

(you probably did but it sure ain't taught)

@yassie_j it's also true of Vanessa Nakate who stood alongside Greta Thunberg but few mentioned her (and plenty of media outlets cropped them out) because she wasn't a white European.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/25/world/vanessa-nakate-cropped-intl-scli/index.html

Ugandan climate activist cropped out of photo taken with her white peers

The Associated Press news agency (AP) has apologized after cropping a Ugandan climate activist from a photograph where she had posed with her white peers after a press conference in Davos, Switzerland.

CNN

@yassie_j I wish this were true, but as a Pakistani and as someone with friends who know Malala irl, I can tell you Malala is not a comrade. She has no connection to left-wing movements in Pakistan (or internationally afaict).

Her primary work on education is done through an INGO that is financed by the likes of Bill Gates & Tim Cook. She is also literally friends with Hillary Clinton and is producing a Broadway play with her...

IMO present-day Malala is nowhere near as radical as Greta.

@yassie_j almost as if they don't want to share that kind of stuff, how shocking /sarc

@yassie_j greta has gone woke!!!

(Always has been)

@[email protected] Many of her critics also basically said:"Stick to climate change, you're not cut out for this politics stuff!"

Ah yes. Climate change is not political...
@hannah @yassie_j oh it is when they disagree with it too. just not when something else bothers them more at the moment.
@hannah @yassie_j "Political", in this context, means "opposing oligarchic narratives".
@yassie_j yeah real interesting
@yassie_j
The capitalist media loves a fake activist. Greta is a real one. They stopped covering her because she's not playing ball for them.
@cthulku

@yassie_j lets just say so did her support...

  • The problem is she completely lost the point.

Had she stayed eith #SystemChangeNotClimateChange, she'd have way more support...

@yassie_j We know what they are afraid of: revelation of the truth to the public.
The oligarchs can’t allow that: it would bring their world down.

@yassie_j fwiw, I've seen this pointed out before.

(...and once again, we need citizen-owned news-sources.)

@yassie_j it didn't just drop, it reversed the narrative
@yassie_j they thought she was just stepping up to be that year's inspiring "hands across america" slow news day inspirational news package item and then they realized she was five million percent Real and ran the fuck away lmao
@yassie_j I disagree

I don't think it's interesting, it's like, the opposite of interesting, it's very normal and expected, boring even

@yassie_j
This is a very good point that most haven't noticed.

When an organization is managed through chaos and confusion. The #empressario and bootlickers suck up all the media attention with the crisis du jour and invented crisises. Hey, 👀 over here.

There NO space or time for identifying real problems and sharing the limelight with other problem solvers and analysis.

@yassie_j To my knowledge media coverage dropped sharply as she started to make antisemitic statements (at least at German speaking countries).
