@echo_xc Great graphic, thanks!
@obc thanks I did it on Canva!
@echo_xc
what is this "sup" thing that's opposite whatsapp?
@frankie @echo_xc it’s another messenger app based on signal by the same people as pixelfed (looks a bit redundant imo)
@jthal @frankie @echo_xc so, why not just signal?
@cascheranno @frankie @echo_xc signal isn’t in the fediverse? tbh i agree, don’t think it’s worth fragmenting the market any more with another app
@cascheranno @frankie @jthal @echo_xc shoot sorry got my wires crossed. Im not sure how signal vs sup vs whatsapp compare, particularly around signal federation
@cascheranno Even if it doesn't really relate to what you asked, the main problem with Signal is phone number verification. Personally, I don't have a SIM card. SimpleX is better for my use case.
@echo_xc sup isn't usable yet so somewhat hard to choose.
@justin @echo_xc that threw me, too. Signal is solid, I’m on some group chats there… just use signal.
@echo_xc what’s the name of the apps. I don’t recognize their logos.
@echo_xc Facebook's replacement is missing
@echo_xc There is no #SUP right? It will, maybe in the future .... ?
@echo_xc is sup ready? How is it different than signal?
@sashin @echo_xc where can one find information on sup? It's a bad term to search for...
@echo_xc AFAIK Sup doesn’t really exist – except as source code in a repository that hasn’t been updated in over 1 1/2 years. *sigh* So even though it keeps getting mentioned as a replacement for WhatsApp, it really isn’t. For that, I’d say Signal is a more popular option but I really wish people would check out Session. It’s essentially the same with better anonymity.
@maverick604 That's a quite good info. I know it's in the developing phase and not yet released. And yeah is the signal is the best option.
@maverick604 @echo_xc According to @soatok Session has worse anonymity compared to Signal, and shouldn't be used: http://soatok.blog/2025/01/14/dont-use-session-signal-fork/
Don’t Use Session (Signal Fork) - Dhole Moments

Last year, I outlined the specific requirements that an app needs to have in order for me to consider it a Signal competitor. Afterwards, I had several people ask me what I think of a Signal fork c…

Dhole Moments
@cesarb thanks for that link. Interesting. My main point about anonymity was due to Signal requiring a phone number – which I think is idiotic. I understand they are trying to uncouple this requirement, but the last time I created an account, it was still required.

@maverick604 Well every social messaging app request us to enter the phone number. For your question I found some answers from the internet:

1. Easy Authentication: Phone numbers are universal and simple to verify via SMS.
2. User Discovery: Automatically finds friends by syncing with your contacts.
3.Spam Prevention: Harder to create fake accounts compared to emails.

@cesarb You might also be interested in Session’s response to the article you sent:

Session

@maverick604 @cesarb

I think you can use a land line (phone booth?) to set up an account on signal if you are serious about anonymity.

Skype (Microsoft) is a messaging app that doesn't require a phone number.

There's that awkward balance to be found between the 'best' communication app and the app that all my friends have...

@schuga @cesarb Yes. Having a solution that others also use it’s important. 😉

I don’t believe Skype is encrypted and also Microsoft, so that’s a non-starter IMO.

I’m still leaning toward preferring Session. But think Signal is a reasonable compromise.

@echo_xc Further #AltText4You

Using logos:
Mastodon = X
Pixelfed = Instagram
Loops = TikTok
sup = WhatsApp

@art4 I want to know more about friendica.

@echo_xc
#Friendica is a Decentralized Social Network. It has built-in support for ActivityPub (e.g. Funkwhale, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed), OStatus (e.g. StatusNet, GNU social, Quitter) and diaspora* protocols. Even ATProtocol (Bluesky). And it can import websites and blogs into the social stream via RSS/Atom feeds.

And it has no 500 character limit.

And of course it is #FOSS.

friendica – A Decentralized Social Network

@echo_xc the = signs are very misleading 😆
@berobe I know but they do the same purpose.
@echo_xc What is sup ?

@koreus

It is a messenging app made by the creator of PixelFed. Never heard about it before...

Sup is a New Messaging App by the Creator of Pixelfed - We Distribute

A brand new messaging app is coming to the Fediverse, and it's all thanks to the creator of Pixelfed.

We Distribute
@echo_xc where is sup available?
@Erwin_Schroedinger sup is not available yet. It's in the developing phase.
@echo_xc @Erwin_Schroedinger
Is development still active? The last commit i see for Sup is from two years ago from the GitHub repo: https://github.com/thesupapp/mobile-app

@mhynlo Well the answer to that is the developers are still working on it. In my knowledge (maybe its wrong) the developers are mainly focusing on Pixelfed and mastodon. There is no official news about the sup inactive. In concise to this answer, the developers are very busy!

@echo_xc Except is Mastodom actually like the 1/3 porn site?

I haven't had an account there but from what hear its full of garbage and scumbags.

I have yet to see any toots being force suggested to me on my instance.
And the amount of mis-/dis-information seems to be very low.

@echo_xc pretty cool!!! I would love messenger apps being federated as Mastodon, being able to chat from one to another, as per now, it's difficult to jump out of WhatsApp
@echo_xc I'm hoping for a facebook alternative, I'm excited tho 💖
@yeehawmax i forgot to mention because one of the comment showed me the alternative of facebook is # #friendica . Just check it out.
@Open Tech @Shia Not the alternative. But the oldest from a whole family of alternatives, all from the same developer, that spans 14 years of development.

It's just that, while Friendica is obscure (although it has been around since 2010), Hubzilla (from 2012/2015) is much more obscure, (streams) (from 2021) is almost entirely unknown outside of the Hubzilla community, and Forte (from last August) is still experimental.

@echo_xc Using Matrix as WhatsApp alternative.
Federated, Opensource and you can even bridge other protocols there.
@echo_xc swap WhatsApp with Matrix

@petrescatraian Matrix leaks too much metadata and most people using WhatsApp do 1on1 messaging.

Therefore, Signal :)

We need one for TouTube
@echo_xc loops video huh. I'm gonna check it out
@txtechnician loops video is in the testing phase. Now they invited some iphone users. That means loops is not available to the public right now!

@echo_xc yeah I filled in the form at loops.video.

But I saw that the app was only available on iOS.

Which is a big bummer for me.

I'm about as anti-apple as you can get without outright hating it.

Like, I respect them. And I'm grateful for their past involvements in free and open source technologies (cups). But I absolutely abhor their walled garden approach.

@txtechnician yeah let's just wait. I'm using the android. I like the apple's security layers. But apple doesn't support most of the apps that's not available in the appstore. For android we can download whatever apps we want.
Also we can change the settings of Android if you know ADB commands. We can install new OS like Lineage OS, Ubuntu Touch, etc...

@echo_xc I moved all of my operating systems over to Linux years ago.

I'm really interested in using a Linux phone.

I've seen Manjaro with the KDE plasma mobile.

I just bought my wife a new pixel phone. And she has a pixel 3 which I intend on flashing. Because some of the mobile operating system support that device.

I'm pretty excited to try it out. She's taking her sweet time transferring everything over.

@echo_xc I said all my operating systems. But I am still using an Android phone.

I'll switch to Linux as soon as it becomes a viable option. I don't give a crap about banking apps.

I'm just absolutely exhausted by large companies having so much control over me.

I also really hate the idea that the president is able to just ding my phone at any given point in time.

@txtechnician yeah most of the banking apps doesn't support rooted device. But if you have two phones it's completely fine.

@txtechnician I guess you can try ubuntu touch. Here's the link. Upgrading to ubuntu touch is so simple. There's lots of yt videos related to that.

https://www.ubuntu-touch.io/

Ubuntu Touch • Linux Phone

Ubuntu Touch is the open source phone that has freedom and privacy in mind. Supported by dozens of devices, with installer for FOSS fans

@echo_xc yeah that's what I was looking to do.

I would have tried this out a whole lot sooner. But I didn't want to buy a different phone.

And I was a long-time fan of Samsung's note series.

All of the mobile Linux distribution supported Samsung Galaxy but they didn't support Samsung Note.

Never did bother to try installing it on any of those notes. I would imagine it would work. But, eh too busy to mess with it.
