We expect that some 50 Auschwitz Survivors will come to the Memorial to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation, which will be held in front of the main gate of the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp.

On January 27, the eyes and ears of the world should rest upon them.

We must safeguard their voices from silence, distortion, instrumentalization, or being overshadowed. Their message should help us shape the memory of the human tragedy of #Auschwitz.

Hopefully it can serve as a reminder to current generations not to remain silent when genocide is being committed against living people today.

Particularly to those with the platforms that potentially have global reach. It would be a crime against these dead to avoid that charge.

Never again, to anyone, anywhere.

@contrasocial I fully agree: remembering is not enough. Full support should be given to the #InternationalCriminalCourt ; rogue states - those that are not yet states parties [1] - should be pressured to sign+ratify the #RomeStatute . Fugitives wanted by the ICC [2] should be sent to The Hague for trial for #WarCrimes , #CrimesAgainstHumanity or #Genocide, retaining full rights to a lawyer, a doctor and family visits.

@auschwitzmuseum even this picture is startling and haunting. It made me jump.
@auschwitzmuseum With all due respect and no disrespect to the survivors, but this photo should be a lesson learned in why we should never lose “perspective” on what is happening in our world today.
@bouriquet @auschwitzmuseum The photos don’t give the true perspective. Anyone who knows the stories of families being ripped from their homes at gunpoint from dozens of countries, put on trains and sent to camps, where they were forcibly made to work as slaves, had medical experiments conducted on them, and then were killed by the thousands in ovens specifically designed to kill them, has ‘perspective’ on why what’s going on today in Israel is not genocide by that definition.
@boulder @bouriquet @auschwitzmuseum What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is genocide. Please don't whitewash it, the U.S. is taking care of that.
@tzudad @bouriquet @auschwitzmuseum Nothing we can say to each other will change the others view. Alas perhaps we can both agree the 80th anniversary is worth remembering on its own facts, which are not diminished by our disagreement over the events today.
@boulder @tzudad @auschwitzmuseum This is exactly what makes mastodon a civilized place to discuss issues, opinions and present art and ideas. Peaceful discussion and respect is always appreciated and is so difficult to find elsewhere in our polarized society.

@auschwitzmuseum
Thank you for your post.
The world should honor these survivors.

Peace

@auschwitzmuseum
Передавайте привет тем, кто этот лагерь построил и кто сторожил заключённых. Они там как раз будут.

@auschwitzmuseum
I'm an old bloke, but is there a way I might be able to visit at that time, just to pay my respects?

I was not born when that went on, but I had family who were, but would like to participate in this.

I imagine finding hotels or similar might be hard.

@auschwitzmuseum keep posting this. There are many who'll keep boosting it #niewieder #jetz
