@AlinaLeonova
I always add #AltText, but since it is a PITA and I would feel bad not using alt text I tend to post #Images to #Mastodon less.

@Methylcobalamin Whatโ€™s a PITA?
@AlinaLeonova @Methylcobalamin I believe shorthand for pain in the ass
@usmu Good to know, thanks ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

@Methylcobalamin

Actually it's a beautiful and interesting challenge, even the PITA effect itself.

:)

@usmu @AlinaLeonova

@jesuisatire

I have a feeling you misread my comment. I was only explaining what PITA means to answer a question, not stating my feelings on alt=text. It was somebody else who used it for that

@usmu

I mentioned wrong, just changed the order.
sry

In any case my comment wasn't mend to address or interpret feelings but a simple statement on creating #ALTtext themself and the:
"Ohh no, I'm in such a hurry to toot my world saving information and have to add some picture description .. :( "

ALT-text isn't a simple image description for me anymore, it adds more content and interpretation and even adds character length to some toot's.

@AlinaLeonova @Methylcobalamin

@Methylcobalamin @AlinaLeonova I agree it's a PITA but I refuse to post less pics because I'm too lazy for an alt text ๐Ÿ˜
@๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿฅฆ @Alina Leonova I may not be on Mastodon (seriously, I'm not, open my profile and look at it), but same here. My image posts are usually one every few weeks, sometimes with more than a month in-between.

I can't churn out image posts daily if it takes me hours to write a proper explanation for one meme post or several days to describe and explain one original image in a way I consider sufficient. In fact, it takes long enough to find motives that won't cause me to spend weeks describing and explaining the image.

Oh, then I voted wrong, because that's what I do too. Recently diagnosed ND because of serious lack of daily spoons, also vision impaired, and in no way interested being harassed for not providing alt texts, so no pictures from me. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@HN414 @AlinaLeonova

What does ND mean? The spoon reference? I got lazy once and posted a slightly complex infographic without alt text. It would have taken a long time to describe everything in it. A sighted person complained, so I deleted the post. End result, nobody got to have it.

I'm not saying that should be the way things are. If a 1-2 line alt text adequately describes an image I do not. Visual humor and infographics require doing a lot more writing, so I don't post those.

@HN414 @AlinaLeonova

To put it more briefly, having only images with alt text can be done 2 ways. Putting alt text in all images or not posting images. I often choose the second option as I am lazy and I would feel bad posting images without alt text.

Spoon theory - Wikipedia

@Methylcobalamin @AlinaLeonova

Another thing I seriously love about the alt text enforcers is the hypocrisy.

My ND situation inhibits my attention span so I can't just listen or watch to a stream of linear media from the beginning to the end. But it also enables me to read very fast and to take in and process informations in a quicker than average way. So my preferred way of accessing media is reading.

I've never had anyone even reply to my request for a transcript of their media.

@AlinaLeonova Hey, here is #Akkoma in the #Fediverse. Yes I write them always.
@hiker Sorry, I know, I should have said Fediverse, my bad ๐Ÿ™
@AlinaLeonova Really missing a "most of the times" here ๐Ÿ˜…
@DJGummikuh You can choose always, a small margin of error is acceptable๐Ÿ˜

@AlinaLeonova

Please add "Almost"...

I'm getting better from image to image to not forget to add a sufficient Alt-Text.

I selected "Always" cause it's definitely the goal I'll reach.

Good Alt-Text is, even for me as a sighted person, a very useful enhancement.

@CannaParts I canโ€™t add options now because it would reset the poll ๐Ÿ˜ But yeah, if itโ€™s almost, you can definitely choose always.
@CannaParts @AlinaLeonova
I tend to use alt text for a bit of commentary - I always strive to be descriptive, but I tend to use the space to add a bit of wit just to make it more fun for me.

@AlinaLeonova almost always :-)

I actually enjoy doing it, and have discovered it as sort of an art form of its own :)

@danielaKay Yeah, it can be an exercise creative/descriptive writing โ˜บ๏ธ
@AlinaLeonova Is it good or bad that you only ask the Mastodon users in the Fediverse?

The
#Calckey users in the Fediverse always make picture descriptions....

although anyone who uses mastodon belongs to a strange people
๐Ÿ˜‰
@crossgolf_rebel I, too, hate it when ppl. say Mastodon users are obnoxious. Obviously Calckey are just as obnoxious.
@AlinaLeonova
@Tom_ofB haven't you seen the emoji?

Satire!
Now you have to write it down?

@AlinaLeonova
@crossgolf_rebel Sorry, meant Fediverse, Iโ€™m not an expert on this platform, but I meant to ask everyone.
@AlinaLeonova Sorry, I don't want to make a fool of you. It just comes across as silly when only the people at the party who are wearing a blue jacket are addressed ;)

Mastodon is just one software of over 150 other access points to the Fediverse.
And unfortunately people like you always fall into the trap because the Fediverse isn't reported properly and the tech bros always equate Mastodon with the Fediverse.

Sorry again for snapping at you, I've been quite allergic to this generalisation lately
@crossgolf_rebel Iโ€™m not a tech bro lol if anything I donโ€™t understand the mysterious workings of the Fediverse well enough, and thatโ€™s why I made the mistake ๐Ÿ˜ I get that itโ€™s probably obvious for you, but many people (myself included) have very little understanding of how it works. Doesnโ€™t mean any malicious intent though.
@AlinaLeonova By Tech Bro I don't mean you, but the "experts" who explain the Internet to everyone else and unfortunately 99% of them fail because they don't understand it themselves.

Mastodon is nothing more than a browser in the Fediverse network.
It has certain functions that it makes available to you.
I myself use Calckey as a Fediverse browser, which offers me even more possibilities.
I can make quoted posts, write up to 7,000 characters, take 10 pictures in the text, have a drive for my pictures and videos and much more.

There is a good video about the sister service
#Sharkey that works similarly.
Maybe it will help you understand the differences between the services.

And I'll attach a picture, our service shows us which services or software the instances connected to us are using.
I hope this explains more clearly how it works when you greet the blue jackets

@AlinaLeonova

I haven't used Calckey for a long time now.
Other Misskey forks including Sharkey & CherryPick (Misskey's own fork) show a popup if you haven't added AltText.
Misskey itself I think also does this.

So technically we do automatically.
If I can't do AltText on an image etc, I add it in the body of the text.
Another plus for Misskey - default 3000 character limit; forks and individual instances are higher, so easier to do in fact.
Often I do both for good measure.
If I absolutely can't then I add
#Alt4You

@crossgolf_rebel
@AlinaLeonova always, except when I forget, or when the image is already described in the post itself.
@AlinaLeonova @UnconventionalEmma โ€Almost alwaysโ€ wouldโ€™ve been the exactly right choice for me.

@zeitverschreib Huh I mean everyone who can see this post. I guess I should have said Fediverse?
@AlinaLeonova That would have been great. ๐Ÿค—
@zeitverschreib Sorry! I amended it in the comments, but I don't think I can edit the post without resetting the poll.
@AlinaLeonova
If that poll is correct then there are many more "Never"s than are owning up to it. I don't see even half the images on here with #AltTxt
@Gillinger The sample size might not be enough for accuracy, or people who never do it might not vote. I see quite a lot of images with alt-text. Iโ€™d say most of them in my timeline, but the truth is, I donโ€™t always check, so I might be wrong.
@AlinaLeonova What is a "boost" ? I have "share", "Star" and "bookmark" icon only. ๐Ÿค”

@AlinaLeonova I try to but I don't always. I've ended up often deleting pictures or whole toots because I'm not happy with the alt text, or it's taking 10 minutes to write and rewrite and one finger typing on a phone with my massive hands is horrible. On the plus side I waste less time on mastodon now, as does everyone else who benefits from me not taking up space on their timeline.
@AlinaLeonova
"Is it good alt text" would be more interesting, but that would be for others to judge. I've seen a lot that doesn't get close to conveying the spirit or information in the picture.
@geoffl For now I just want to know how many people do it. How well is a different question, but I think effort counts because not everyone is good at descriptions and it might take some time to learn.
