I made a quilted winter cover for the AC in my living room (in lieu of taking it out), and also a very silly joke.

Part of why this amuses me is because it’s been many years since I owned a TV.

@debcha It's instantly recognisable for people above a certain age, especially if you have technical interests πŸ˜„
@sindarina @debcha I was almost offended by the need for an explanation!
@sindarina @LeoRJorge I teach undergraduate engineering students, so I’ve long since learned not to assume that everyone just knows what I know, much less to get offended when they don’t. Besides, per this xkcd cartoon, it’s so much more fun and generative to share the explanation. https://xkcd.com/1053/

@debcha @LeoRJorge Yes, explaining it to people who hear about it for the first time is so much fun πŸ˜„

Provided they are actually interested, that is. Which, as someone who holds many, many obscure facts in her head, is not always the case πŸ˜‚

@debcha @sindarina sorry I wasn't more clear in my comment! I was referring to the previous comment about "people over a certain age"! It's the kind of thing we take for granted everyone has seen a thousand times before...
@debcha I made it the flag of my Animal Crossing island!
@ranjit This is absolutely adorable.
@debcha This is utterly delightful.
@debcha definitely got me to chuckle. Thanks

@debcha
I winterize my ACs also.
Yours are far more stylish!

'I understood this reference.'-Capt. America

@debcha It's not a silly joke, it just shows that your air conditioner needs to be colour calibrated! The bottom left and bottom right squares should match. My first post-graduation job was in a university TV studio...
@debcha That is awesome! What a fun thing to do!!
@debcha that’s amazing! You know you stayed up too late when you see that. :)
@debcha I like that! that looks really cool!
@debcha @foone
... the colours of television, tuned to a dead channel

@debcha

this.
is.
fantastic.

that is all. ☺

@debcha
That's very pretty. My a/c is a big-ass floor model so I should find a moderately attractive way to cover it during the off-season. I have 1-100 projects in the queue at the moment so it may not be this winter!

@debcha Does it make noise? Say....at 1000 Hz?

I had to look it up again to remember the name: "SMPTE color bars." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMPTE_color_bars

I love the idea and it looks amazing on your AC. As a geek old enough to remember watching this on Saturday mornings while waiting for the cartoons to start, this could/should totally be a full-size bed quilt! :)

@debcha BUT - bonus quiz - will the white end be hotter than the dark blue end?

@debcha
The really bad thing is that younger people do not now the meaning. It is just a cover with colored patches.
That this is an test image that was shown when the tv program was closed after midnight since the tv nowadays runs non stop.

So, I assume anybody that wrote a comment is probably older than 30

@red_rooster why is it bad?
@evert
1. because the test image was a constant in my generation and that of my parents and the youth does not even know it.
2. There is non-stop television
@debcha But do you hear the sound when you look at it?
@debcha I think your winter cover is busted, all i see is the test screen...
@debcha
Your next challenge πŸ˜‰
@debcha Love it! That would also make a great pattern for a messenger bag.
@debcha I feel like it's time to go to bed.
@debcha The BBC Engineering Slack was wondering if you sources some vantablack cloth for the PLUGE part
@KevinMarks I think I’d have to fistfight Anish Kapoor for it.
@debcha @KevinMarks cheat and do a Gregory's hole!
@mikechislett @KevinMarks Putting a hole in the insulated winter cover for my air conditioner might rather defeat the purpose.
@debcha Amazing idea. Where I’m from, we had a different test image. Nowadays, TV transmission never ends, and I miss seeing it.
@debcha Never Twice the Same Cover.
@debcha ahh! A test (quilting) pattern!
@Tama23 Given that it is also my first quilt, that is true in multiple senses!
@debcha πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜† hee heee hehehheee heeeh eeee
