New Steam Controller 2 and VR controller designs got leaked

Valve did a bit of a woops here, as they recently accidentally leaked the designs for what looks like their upcoming Steam Controller 2 and a new VR controller that is likely to come with the long leaked Deckard VR headset.

@gamingonlinux Boy, it's ugly.

I'll take one.

@gamingonlinux The controller looks ugly as hell but if it's comfortable and works who cares.

I really hope they keep their "take the blueprints and fix it if you want it" philosophy that they had with the SteamDeck.

@gamingonlinux MORE BUTTONS IN VR!
HELL YEAH!
@gamingonlinux @tanguy hmmm idk, it’s already hard enough to know which damn button the game wants me to press when I can’t see the controller…

@gamingonlinux also, somebody 3d printed it already 😬🤣

On the heels of Valve's Project Ibex leaking, a community member has unveiled his own Steam Controller inspired by the #SteamDeck, and it looks like exactly what I would think for a Steam Deck Controller: https://steamdeckhq.com/community-made-steam-deck-controller-shown/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

The one thing that makes me angry about this controller, is the fact that I must go through a scalper to purchase it because my country still can't purchase Valve hardware directly.
@gamingonlinux about once a year I dust off my steam controller, attempt to use it for a few hours, and the rage-quit it into the closet for another cycle... Maybe this one will be better... maybe?
@gamingonlinux Day one purchase if it's <$100.
@gamingonlinux eww, this is probably a prototype, isn't ergonomic at all imho we'll see
@gamingonlinux I'll get it, I love my original Steam Controller. This doesn't look as comfortable (it seems smaller), but Valve always surprises with ergonomics.

@gamingonlinux We’ll have to wait for the size and thickness, and the angle of the grips, but this will probably not work for me. Symmetrical sticks placed in the middle of the controller, with touchpads on the way where my fat hands will likely activate them all the time…

Sounds like a recipe for thumb and wrist pain for me personally :/

@thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux Touchpads on controllers aren’t for me. Think I’d rather buy one of the controllers that Valve did in collaboration with Hori, though, they lack rumble…
@thelinuxEXP When you look at your hands though, your thumbs naturally rest where the sticks are, so it might not be as bad as you think
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP The layout looks quite similiar to the Steam Deck so I guess it'll be a matter of how you feel about that and the minor tweaks they've made like having angled track pads
@BrodieOnLinux @gamingonlinux The deck is fine, because the grips are horizontal and straight, and the sticks very close to the sides of the device, so the thumb rotation is natural.
On that controller, it seems like the opposite
@thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux I can see that as well, I think all we can do is wait and see what actual hands on results are like
@BrodieOnLinux @thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux This is all part of the plot! Steam fakes leaking prototypes to have early returns and make the most out of it!
@BrodieOnLinux @thelinuxEXP I'm sure their designers would have thought of all this though, they're not amateurs
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP Designers also came up with the N64 controller to be fair lol
@BrodieOnLinux @thelinuxEXP which is also very much loved by a lot of people lol

@gamingonlinux @BrodieOnLinux Haha yeah, we’ll see. Ergonomics isn’t an exact science; and doesn’t always work for everyone: AirPods fall out the ears of a fair few people, the PS4 controller was a nightmare for some, and some think the Xbox one controller isn’t good, the Duke managed to get into production, etc..

It can be an awesome controller for a bunch of people, and a nightmare for others :)

@thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux I'm sure someone will get sent an early sample before they go up for sale
@BrodieOnLinux @gamingonlinux Yeah, and honestly, I’m just happy they’re making it! Even if it ends up not working for me personally, it’s another option that we know will work 100% with Linux, so that’s always good
@gamingonlinux @BrodieOnLinux @thelinuxEXP I prefer the layout of the PS4 controller to the xbox style, asymmetry doesn't work for me, and the Steam Controller 2 design looks similar to the PS4 but the sticks, buttons and dpad are too high up imho, if I had designed the controller, they would be about 50% lower (all of them) - but then I'm no designer so what do I know 🤣
@meatlotion @gamingonlinux @BrodieOnLinux Yeah, it really depends, for me, the DualShock 4 is one of the worst controllers I used, it just hurts my hands after 30 minutes, but we’re all anatomically different, so everyone will have different experiences

@thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux @BrodieOnLinux absolutely, everyone is different, and it's great that there are choices of controllers to suit all hands.

Do companies like Sony and Microsoft offer controllers laid out in various ways? It would be nice to see Sony for example offer their branded PS5 controller in either symmetric or asymmetric (or make it modular to change it up) - rather than require the user to buy 3rd party stuff.

@meatlotion @thelinuxEXP @gamingonlinux There are 3rd party controllers that are high quality nowadays that do offer both
@gamingonlinux @thelinuxEXP I’m just happy there even are symmetrical sticks. There’s the Deck, some Ayn devices and maybe 1 Chinese telescope controller for your phone who do this over the Xbox style layout.
@Semmelstulle @gamingonlinux Yeah, my line of thought is « : if almost no one does it, it’s likely because it’s harder to do it well :)
@gamingonlinux Dépends on how inclined the grips are. They look kinda straight down to me, which means the wrists won’t be rotated in the right portion for the thumbs to lay naturally on the sticks, but we’ll see!
There’s also the issue that my thumbs often bump into one another with symmetrical sticks on a PS controller, because the sticks are too close

@thelinuxEXP

@gamingonlinux

It does kind of remind me of the Dreamcast controller, which I did find to be a bit uncomfortable but worse was it being an awkward shape to hold well.

@gamingonlinux Damn finally! One of my dreams becomes reality \o/
@gamingonlinux It looks way too big tbh…
And the sticks are way too inside, I don’t think my fingers could reach them?
@gamingonlinux Order page is where? Hope it comes out soon.
@gamingonlinux Finally a controller I can use the same steam deck controller profiles for
