THERE IS ALMOST NOTHING MORE FRUSTRATING IN COMPUTERS THAN A LONG FORM REQUIRING INFORMATION FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES WHICH RESETS AND CLEARS IF YOU TAKE TOO LONG TO FILL IT OUT
@mcc The real life equivalent of one of those timed switch puzzles in a game. You can hear the ticking clock in your head.
@mcc I am in software development and even I find that a criminal offense.
@mcc How about the ones which clears half your form if you happened to fill something that was at the start of the form way after you filled the rest of it
@mcc so bad. One time I downloaded a horrible Firefox extension just to work around this
@semitones @mcc do you remember which extension? I had a really good one for Chrome, but since switching back to Firefox the only one I’ve found is really hard to use
@ShadSterling @mcc haven't used it in years so the one I used probably doesn't exist anymore, but it basically autosaved text entered into fields

@semitones @mcc I’m currently using “Form History Control (II)”, which does save entries, but doesn’t make it easy to find and reuse them

Form History Control (II)

@ShadSterling @mcc this might have been the one
@mcc lol ya I remember trying to signin to a website (bank?) which clears entries whenever I alt-tab to my password manager.

@mcc Swiss Post goes one further: it logs you out, too!

So helpful when I go to look up an address, get distracted, come back 20 minutes later and find that my session has spookily disappeared.

@mcc try being a Brit and having to decide in a country drop-down selector if in this one you will be British, English, GB, Great Britain, UK, United Kingdom.

For any devs reading - strong preference is United Kingdom or UK as it will be next to the (likely) default US, United States

@b3lt3r @mcc nah, they'll put United States at the top, and leave everything else in the normal order.
@mcc @trendytoots whilst I agree they are annoying I would challenge this with HAVE YOU TRIED PRINTING IN 2024. It’s the worst experience ever.

@Ric @trendytoots no. I'm going to have to print a document this weekend and I'm afraid.

…I'm going to have to print a document… at the 7-11.

@mcc @Ric @trendytoots The local library lets us print here. It costs something like $.05 a page but they bump you to $50 every month on your account so I've never had to pay.

@crazyeddie @Ric @trendytoots that sounds really nice.

I should see if the library where I live does the same thing and I just never knew.

@mcc This happens to our home care nurses all the time
@mcc one that clears if you switch tabs (or apps) to look up the info the form is asking for
@ehproque oh I see you're an Android user too
@mcc @ehproque I learned with painfully experience you can side step this with split screen
@impossibleibex @mcc yeah me too… with the apps that allow it!
@mcc THANK YOU IVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS, I WISH YOU STRENGTH IN GUR BATTLE AGAINST GUR FORMS
@mcc wow, and there i thought web form persistence could not become any more frustrating.
@mcc Don’t forget when they go out of their way to forbid pasting into the form for no reason.
@mcc Didn’t you find the save point that appears when you enter „LIGHTBULB“ in 10.4.2 where it asks you to confirm that you’re not going to hold the creator of the form liable for missing information?
@mcc There's also the forms where if you forget even one required question and hit "submit", it clears all your answers.
@mcc ugh, yea or that reloads if you dare to switch tabs
@mcc and without warnings! Grrr
@mcc I feel your pain. That is so infuriating!
@mcc There's the ones that reject your password choice, don't say why, and clear the whole form.
@mcc
There is if you are dyslexic and the form also blocks your spell checker.
And so many do.
My last dept not only blocked this but also blocked pasting, so I couldn't type the text elsewhere.
And refused to see this as a disability issue.

@mcc This is an accurate description of, unsurprisingly, my state's unemployment system, and it never ceases to be frustrating.

Good news: they recently redid the whole system and moved to a multi-page form!

Bad news: there is no progress saving between pages whatsoever, if it times out you still have to start over from the beginning, AND the new form has some sort of inane Javascript-based buttonsets instead of radio buttons that do weird stuff to keyboard navigation and only actually engage about half the time you click them

@mcc Similarly, long forms that have undocumented syntax requirements (like phone numbers must include country codes and must not include dashes, for example) and don't provide any information about which of the 50 fields on the form is preventing it from posting. There is an error SOMEWHERE in this form, but we won't tell you where and we won't tell you how to address it.
@mcc How about the same form but it fails to submit (without an error message) because a mandatory field is missing that was not displayed because a JS file failed to load and the failed submit also resets the whole form?
@mcc Ppl who let websites do that to forms should go to jail. Same ppl talk about wasting their time, well...
@mcc @lisamelton what about the one that resets and blanks out all fields when you press “send” because one of the fields had an issue but it won’t tell you which one?
