Fuck off, NYT, this is not even vaguely close to notification-level “breaking news”. Strike one.
@gruber but you need to know who won the Nobel Prize in math and physics NOW!
@gruber NYT, notification, strike, blah, blah...all I see is that awesome wallpaper from The Shining!

@gruber We can never win games like this. It's sad. It's why I have most of the cell alerts (threat, warning, etc.) off on my phone. Some joker gets an idea to send something like "avoid CA-87 tonight as the 9ers game lets out around 9PM" as public warning notification.

You might as well be asking UPS not to send you a push notification saying "try our new app!". As if UPS were in the app business and not the logistics business.

@gruber

We’re going to have to hear from the other side about that…

@gruber the carpet really ties it all together.

What’s in room 237?

@gruber you given them several innings it seems.
@gruber I had this problem with the CBC app. Lots of notifications for stuff that isn't breaking news so I ended up just turning it all off.
@gruber I turned them off after some other alert this week. Strike 100.
@gruber I’ve turned off NYTimes app notifications, and am instead now relying on emailed Breaking News from them. Additionally, I have set a filter to move any email with a subject line containing “breaking news” and “trump” directly to the archive folder and marked as read. Et voila.
@gruber Strike one was enough for me. I turned it off. I just get book reviews, cooking and tv reviews now.
@gruber It is, however, not a panic-inducing choice like the guy with the dead worm in his brain that dumped road kill in Central Park and wants to cut federal medical research spending whilst H5N1 has us in its sights.
@gruber “Press secretary in shock press secretary announcement!” 😮
@gruber (Nice wallpaper btw)
@gruber what is the last widget on your lock screen?

@gruber I have yet to find a news app that won’t eventually abuse its notification privileges.

At some point it becomes:
“BREAKING: Part 4 in our 12 part series on the urban experience.”

@gruber NYTimes has been sending “breaking news” alerts for random editorials and think pieces for ages. My real annoyance is when these trash apps re-enable notifications in an update.
@gruber Karoline Leavitt is kind of a horrible person who published paid articles in support of scammer/Bannon-friend Miles Guo. Miles Guo orchestrated protests at the homes of China human rights advocates, in some cases w/ violence. In central NJ, he sent people daily to Teng Biao's home. They threatened his family, shouted obscenities. Guo’s in jail now. This reporter covered it well. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/07/guo-influencers-karoline-leavitt-gavin-wax-matt-palumbo/
Far-right influencers defended an accused fraudster. They had help.

Before Guo Wengui was indicted in a massive fraud scheme, his supporters appear to have successfully placed op-eds in conservative media.

Mother Jones
@gruber Unfortunately, NYT has gone the way of many news outlets. I am no longer a subscriber. I hope this doesn't happen to the WSJ.
@gruber maybe they thought it was a “breaking from news” notification
