“X is really teaching everyone the importance of who owns the sites that we use and rely on to communicate online,” EFF’s @falsemirror told @NBCNews. “What people are seeing with X is that it has subjectively deteriorated in value.”

@eff @falsemirror And yet @NBCNews does not have an option to share on Bluesky or Mastodon? Legacy media have been playing into Facebook and Twitter’s hands for over a decade.

Difference between #Mastodon and Twitter #X these days:
I have over 1600 followers on Twitter, but only 20 views and no interactions on my reply to the @eff (I hardly post there anymore, only to promote the fediverse).

Here on Mastodon, with just 353 followers, already 10 boosts and 12 favorites. Thank you all.

Same: on both platforms: no reply from the

Same: pretty much everything I post on Twitter and BlueSky either links to something on here or promotes JoinMastodon.org in general.

Hey Catharina, I have a small [but expanding] collection of articles at EFF on the fediverse. Always excited to highlight what's being built here.

I share your concerns, and tried to give a fair read on each service here so folks can make an informed choice for themselves:

What’s the Difference Between Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads?

The ongoing Twitter exodus sparked life into a new way of doing social media. Instead of a handful of platforms trying to control your life online, people are reclaiming control by building more open and empowering approaches to social media. Some of these you may have heard of: Mastodon, Bluesky,...

@Kletskous @eff @falsemirror @NBCNews Honestly, I've been surprised Doctorow isn't a major fixture across the fediverse, or running his own instance.

@Kletskous @eff @falsemirror @NBCNews Oh, thanks! gonna go follow.

Weirdly, I did know he was here; I've read his threads on stuff. Not sure how I briefly forgot.

@eff

Trying to get away from bots by moving over to a meta service... Good look with that you chumps.

Yeah, it seems like the general public hasn't digested the lesson for real, just concluded that one particular platform is past the point of no return.

@pteryx

They are much more interested in getting likes than having actual social interaction.

I left as well, it was time. Better pastures and all that...

@eff @falsemirror @NBCNews nah I'm good with mastodons under a bluesky.
@eff I’m one of the 115,414 who ditched their account on Nov. 6. Felt good.
@eff @falsemirror @NBCNews When Elon took over I basically stopped using it, especially after stupid X rebranding. Now that Elon is climbing up Trumps ass, I've decides to just delete my X account. There is no chance I'm ever returning to X.
@eff @falsemirror @NBCNews This is not X specific, it is pretty music any centralized platform, Wether the woes of Spotify, Facebook, Instagram.
We just needed time to see its value, our own value and weigh what is more important.
Many said, if its free, you are the product. That is slowly sinking in and new platforms and solutions are being discovered.
It seems like the world is trying its hardest to teach people that lesson, but almost everyone refuses to learn. So long as threads remains more popular than misskey we've gotten nowhere.

@eff I'm here and on Blue Sky.
@eff X has lost 80% of its stock value as well.

@eff @falsemirror @NBCNews isn't it the right time to choose something without an owner?

#fediverse

@eff @falsemirror @NBCNews

Hopefully, it's:

• A lesson that
sticks
• That people understand
broadly (NYT, LA Times, WaPo, etc.)
• That enough people act on (and habitually act on going forward) that it causes behavior changes among (would be) owners
