Classic Windows apps like Paint and Notepad are also getting LLM (Generative AI) support. There is no reason whatsoever that Notepad should do more than text editing. Microsoft has gone crazy with these tools. Of course, as part of these tools, your text in Notepad is sent to Microsoft under the name of Generative AI, which then sells it to the highest bidder. https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2024/11/06/new-ai-experiences-for-paint-and-notepad-begin-rolling-out-to-windows-insiders/ Stick with FLOSS tools and OS and avoid this madness. Keep your data safe.
New AI experiences for Paint and Notepad begin rolling out to Windows Insiders

UPDATED 11/14: The below Paint and Notepad updates are beginning to rollout to Windows Insiders in the Beta and Release Preview Channels. Please note that generative fill in Paint is ONLY available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs

FYI, You now need AI credits to use basic tools like Notepad and Paint. It's part of their offering called 'Microsoft 365 Personal and Family' or 'Copilot Pro'. These tools come with 'Content Filtering,' and only MS-approved topics or images can be created with their shity AI that used stolen data from all over the web. Read for yourself: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/use-rewrite-in-notepad-to-enhance-your-writing-with-ai-4088b954-c97b-46dc-813f-959be01746d5 Isn't AI wonderful? Artists and authors don't get paid, now you've added censorship, and the best part you need to pay for it!
Use Rewrite in Notepad to Enhance Your Writing with AI - Microsoft Support

@nixCraft Looking forward to running out of credits.
@nixCraft or, I can just not care that it even exists.
@nixCraft If I was forced to use Notepad I'd write a script that used my free credits to feed junk to the system every month.

@nixCraft To clarify, is this credit requirement to use notepad itself, or just to use the AI features theyre bringing to notepad?

It doesn't bother me, i use Notepad++ when rarely on Windows, but I think it's important to be clear on that distinction

@paul @nixCraft it's just to use the AI features. If you have no AI credits, you can still use Notepad normally.
@paul @nixCraft it does say for "rewrite" which I assume is the AI feature. That aside, cramming something like AI into notepad feels totally unnecessary and like they are begging...
@nixCraft Not really... you need AI credits to use Rewrite within those basic apps. You don't need the credits to use the apps themselves.
@nixCraft Enshittification continues unabated. I can’t wait for this AI bubble to pop. Getting so tired of everyone and their grandmother shoving AI into their stuff 😑
@nixCraft and I was seriously thinking about upgrading my CPU to be allowed to upgrade to windows 11...
@itchyballs @nixCraft just install Linux if you have not already
@RadioAzureus @nixCraft I use mostly Linux these days, it's just that one windows install you need from time to time...
@nixCraft does it say that you cannot use Notepad anymore at all or just that the Rewrite function requires credits?
@ilookloud you still can use Notepad like you would normally. My guess is when your credit went low, every time you boot up Notepad, it will notify you.
@mingu that would certainly be annoying but we'd still keep the basic functionality
@ilookloud they probably want to annoy you until you pay
@mingu that's why I'm already on Linux :D
@nixCraft Of course this is the direction Microsoft wants to go. Microsoft is evil. There's no nice way of saying it.
@nixCraft
Of all the things to enshittify, why notepad? Come on.
@nixCraft Screw Microsoft and Windows! Just use LInux and get back the ownership of your computer...
@nixCraft need alternatives, quick.
@nixCraft a few months ago I read Copilot was a rebranding of Bing Chat. Imagine paying for Bing Chat as a pro feature. 😆

@nixCraft When big corps accelerate climate collapse by collecting rent on our property, harvesting and censoring our thoughts, the dystopian future is now.

How many more updates until they charge DOUBLE for disabling the LLM or launching an alternative editor?

@nixCraft Just like the internet 🛜 was created before greedy corporate bastards raping AI, we the Wizards 🪄 shall make them as valid as MySpace

#AI #rape #win64 #notepad #Microsoft

@nixCraft Nows the time to switch to Linux.
@nixCraft AI in a text editor? Oh please, #gptel in #emacs.
@nixCraft

i already finding linux distro because trump
@nixCraft You can wrench Notepad++ and Paint.NET from my cold dead soul.
@nixCraft I just installed mint on my laptop tonight. Would recommend for anyone looking for a straight forward install process.
@nixCraft Can someone provide a pointer to a drop in FLOSS replacement of notepad? Is there opennotepad out there that is maintained?
@darkcyberman @nixCraft Notepad++. Since it has syntax highlight, tabs and advanced options, you may consider it too advanced for your needs, but it's pretty handy and lightweight. I see no reason to use anything else.
@darkcyberman plenty, but most of them are source code editors which look unnecessary complicated to normal user who only want to type and save.

@darkcyberman @nixCraft There are many superior FLOSS text editors. I use Notepad++ for basic text editing on Windows

Notepad++

@nixCraft Oh no. So windows 11 is going to be more junk than it already is?
@nixCraft And it gives them another reason to fire up 3 Mile Island again. "We need more energy for the AI people want!!" (Actually: for the AI we want to shove into people's machines.)
@nixCraft i'm pretty sure the only reason these were even used is because they were the only pieces of microsoft software that weren't so bloated and launched instantly

@nixCraft "We have also continued to improve Notepad launch performance. With this update, most users will see app launch time improve by more than 35%, with some users seeing improvements of 55% or more."

Honestly I have never been bothered by waiting for Notepad to launch. The obvious solution is to remove the effin AI and launch will improve by 95%.

@nixCraft It seems Microsoft seeks reasons to have all data sent to their servers. I even read that outlook nowadays uses Microsoft mailservers as intermediate server, if you fetch mail from your own mailservers (https://mastodon.social/@nielsk/112693661708469575). Evil practices…
@nixCraft pulling AI features into MS Notepad…
@nixCraft The new Paint sucks anyway. Ever since they abandoned Win98 style, it lost its charm.
@nixCraft They couldn't work on getting syntax highlighting and Language Server Protocol - But could do AI. What a waste. But them again, M-x M-butterfly has been giving us AI credits since about mid-1970's ;)
@nixCraft I wish I could game unimpeded on Linux and play VR... that's the only thing holding me back from using it at this point
@nixCraft I remember days Notepad was ultra fast. Not anymore!
@nixCraft Decades ago i started using Context Editor on Windows. Mainly because it doesn't destroy the line feeds in Linux files reachable via Samba.
@nixCraft with Trump in charge you just KNOW this data won't be misused - you can trust all US companies
@nixCraft microsoft is trying to make themselves worst
