BREAKING: The Supreme Court allows Virginia to engage in a late voter-purge program that two lower courts held is likely illegal under federal law. The Republican appointees did so over the objection of the Democratic appointees.

Background: https://www.lawdork.com/p/virginia-doesnt-care-if-its-late

Virginia doesn't care if its late voter-purge program cancels legal voter registrations

A federal judge stopped the program on Friday, but Virginia is asking the Fourth Circuit to let them keep it going — with a promise of a SCOTUS request if needed.

Both the district court and appeals court gave reasons for their decision. Today’s Supreme Court decision, technically staying the injunction pending Virginia’s appeal of the case, contains no explanation of why the justices took this action.
This is a disturbing shadow docket decision, up there with the 2021 shadow docket decision allowing Texas’s S.B. 8 vigilante abortion law to go into effect despite Roe.

Important note from one of the lawyers representing the nonprofit organizations that sued: There is same-day registration in Virginia, so, know what you need to bring with you, but even purged legal voters should be able to vote if they realize they were improperly purged.
Here's my report at Law Dork on today's SCOTUS order: https://www.lawdork.com/p/scotus-conservatives-allow-virginias
SCOTUS conservatives allow Virginia's late voter-purge program to go back into effect

A stark reminder that this Supreme Court is not interested in being and will not serve as a guardrail for democracy.

Big "if!"

Not if they don't know they've been purged, don't know about same day registration, aren't told about it at the poll (can't necessarily rely on poll workers. I registered at DMV, was still turned away at the poll in a Republican county &, even after traveling to the Registrar's office, never offered a provisional ballot, didn't know I was entitled to one) or don't have means/time to travel to the registrar's office voting day:

@chrisgeidner

And especially will not be able to register if they rely on the general info on voter registration at the official #Virginia Dept of Elections website, which still tells voters they must register no later than 3 weeks before the election:

@chrisgeidner This is all the more insane given how well informed people are in Northern Virginia. Voters won't forget.
@chrisgeidner Roberts finds the idea of nonwhite people voting appalling.
@chrisgeidner Oooh, oooh! I can explain it.
