Fuck Microsoft and Fuck Nadella.

As expected, the 24H2 update installed 'Recall', it can't be uninstalled.

To disable the Microcoft spyware, run this as admin

C:\Windows\System32>Dism /Online /Disable-Feature /Featurename:Recall

Can't vouch that all the people you share your screen, code, IP, private details, will disable theirs. consider NOT sharing anything ever again.

@hareldan
Come to the dark side. We hate cookies ;-). Switched to #linux_mint because of this. I started with dual boot, but I haven't used Windows in several months.

@veruhl this is a work laptop so the only other option is a mac.

(Not because we can't run Linux, because of all the other spyware we're required, like crowdstrike, etc)

I am seriously considering a @frameworkcomputer in the future

@hareldan @veruhl @frameworkcomputer I did not investigate too hard, but my Linux corporate laptop appears to have a bunch of same category "enterprise protection software"
@hareldan @veruhl @frameworkcomputer Do it. Not only is it a fine and lightweight laptop, but also my USB power cord pooped out after a couple of years of use. They replaced it for free. Stand-Up Folks IMHO.
@hareldan @veruhl @frameworkcomputer It's a problem that the whole industry suffers from, and sadly one that it created by itself.
The worst part is that everyone thinks there is no alternative and that it's perfectly normal to "own" everything your workforce thinks and does. Or they don't even realize that they're doing exactly that just by relying on such tools.
Maybe it's time that the regulators step in. Or perhaps workers unions. I haven't seen much action on that front, sadly.

@veruhl @hareldan

Ping if something is confusing. Often online "why is this" are misinformed, or hostile to new users.

I'll try not to be.

@veruhl

I have switched to Linux Mint on my laptop and it works like a champ. I'll probably install it on my desktop when win10 dies.

@hareldan

@monkeyben @veruhl @hareldan

If you don't need the internet in win64 (local games etc) there are solutions for win10 even win11 which remove crapware in total. However no updates are possible so you need to wait for them to get official large patches de-crapped. That makes little internet contact important.
Full internet should only be done when you are in a VM

#win64 #win11 #Linux #POSIX #Programming #recall #War #InfoSec

@veruhl @hareldan that's how it went for our mom also :)
dual boot but barely used Windows in the last years. she's also on Mint and currently so are we.
@elexia @hareldan The only thing that hindered me from switching to Linux earlier was gaming. I used Linux Mint inside a VM. Then I discovered https://www.protondb.com/
ProtonDB | Gaming know-how from the Linux and Steam Deck community

Game information for Proton, Linux, Steam Deck, and SteamOS

@veruhl "We hate cookies, we love mints tho"

Sadly, I can't move over to Linux just as-is because some pretty software I use, doesn't run on Linux (and Wine isn't a solution either) :\

@hareldan

@veruhl @hareldan

I am sooo upset I have to use Windows for my future work (thk god it is only for 2 months). Only issue I had to open my private mail privider there...

@veruhl

@hareldan

That was also my path many years ago with Ubuntu. And I'm happy happy as a user of Debian and OpenBSD.
Be prepared to feel the itch to Distro-hop 😉
My tip: Try it and if you feel home somewhere that's perfect.

@veruhl @hareldan I tried switching, but not everything worked on Mint. So, I use dual boot now...
