Returning to the XOXO stage ten years after his satirical “How I Won the Lottery” talk, @darius reflects on the compromises that come with being “indie” and the toxic systems that coerce us into betraying our values. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/darius-kazemi
Darius Kazemi · Videos · XOXO

When he last spoke at XOXO in 2014, internet artist Darius Kazemi was making Twitter more fun with bots and toys. These days, Darius helps people leave centralized social media instead: showing you how to run your own social network for friends, working on his Hometown fork of Mastodon, and researching ways to make the fediverse more resilient.

Gita Jackson · Videos · XOXO

XOXO
"We have to fix the fucking networks." Writer/researcher @kissane on how her work on the COVID Tracking Project was made possible by social platforms now hostile to real human connection, and why we need better, safer networks for our collective survival. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/erin-kissane
Erin Kissane · Videos · XOXO

Writer/researcher Erin Kissane is working to build better and safer networks for collective survival, with efforts including the COVID Tracking Project, a powerful 40,000 word analysis of Meta’s role in the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, and current research into the culture and governance of the next wave of social networks.

XOXO
"This did not define me." Two years after her XOXO 2016 talk, Sarah Jeong became the target of a massive right-wing harassment campaign. Six years later, she revisits the ridiculous, traumatic, uniquely terrible experience—with a message of hope for others. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/sarah-jeong
Sarah Jeong · Videos · XOXO

After years of writing about “the internet of garbage,” The Verge’s Sarah Jeong found herself at the center of it: the target of a right-wing harassment campaign when she joined the New York Times’ editorial board. After eight years, Sarah returns to the XOXO stage to talk about what’s happened since.

XOXO
"Envy. Impatience. They’re the monster I struggle with, but they are ultimately a part of me." Folding Ideas' Dan Olson on measuring himself against the work of others, a sometimes-debilitating pressure that also drives him to make new things. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/dan-olson
Dan Olson · Videos · XOXO

Alberta-based documentarian Dan Olson is the creator of Folding Ideas, a series of filmic long-form video essays with incisive critical looks at media, technology, and culture. His feature-length skewering of NFTs and the Metaverse alone have been viewed over 20 million times on YouTube, anticipating the collapse of both bubbles.

XOXO
"You can monetize a hate video, but there is no hazard pay for harassment." Sweet Baby Inc. founder/CEO Kim Belair shares what happened when a conspiracy theory about "woke-ifying" video games spawned a year-long coordinated hate campaign against her 16-person studio. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/kim-belair
Kim Belair · Videos · XOXO

Writer and narrative designer Kim Belair is the CEO and co-founder of Sweet Baby, a Montreal-based narrative development company that works with game companies to strengthen their storytelling, including advocating for authentic representation of marginalized characters, spawning a conspiratorial backlash right out of the Gamergate playbook.

XOXO
"I have achieved every professional accolade that I could have ever dreamed of and more, and it completely broke me." Science journalist Ed Yong earned global acclaim and a Pulitzer for his critical reporting on the pandemic for The Atlantic, but it came at a deeply personal cost. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/ed-yong
Ed Yong · Videos · XOXO

Avid birder and Pulitzer-winning science journalist Ed Yong built a devoted audience for his deeply empathetic coverage of the pandemic for The Atlantic, while his two New York Times bestsellers, I Contain Multitudes and An Immense World, shared his curiosity about life on Earth at all scales.

XOXO
"Appreciate everything endlessly." A pit stop on a Seattle road trip at McDonald's in Centralia, WA sent Panic's @cabel down a deep and magical rabbit hole into the undiscovered life's work of a nearly-forgotten artist, bringing everyone at XOXO along for the ride. https://xoxofest.com/2024/videos/cabel-sasser/
Cabel Sasser · Videos · XOXO

“Don’t waste this. Keep everyone guessing. Make me proud.” When Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser spoke at our second festival in 2013, the Mac software company had just started venturing into games by funding the studio behind Firewatch, an indie blockbuster that launched Panic’s games publishing business and, eventually, the Playdate handheld console. See the artwork in this talk, and more, at Cabel’s new Wes Cook Archive.

@xoxo @cabel This is absolutely bananas! Wes’ artwork is incredible, thank you so much preserving it and sharing it with us all!
@xoxo @cabel This was SO good! Thanks for sharing. :)
@xoxo @cabel Superb talk! Thank you 🙏
A short while after his talk, @cabel walked out of Revolution Hall carrying the rolled-up mural, presumably to take it to the Louvre, and everyone in the park cheered.
@gknauss if i can allow myself this: that was maybe one of the best moments of my life. the way the applause slowly built from group to group felt like the triumphant end of an 80’s movie. i’ll never forget it. what a great group of people.
@cabel @gknauss even the people outside in the tent (me) were losing it
@cabel @gknauss For those of us who weren’t there: what are its dimensions?
@xoxo @cabel Cabel, you are a very good speaker and this is a very good talk.

@xoxo @cabel
Me: <watches talk>

Also me, by the end: I’m not crying, there’s just something in my eye.

Truly appreciative.

@xoxo @cabel Stevenotes had their “one more thing”. Cabelnotes now have “what if”. What a beautiful, fun, positive, and uplifting talk.
@cabel Something about the depressingly soulless corporate decision to tear all that history down, coupled with your final reveal made me actually cry this morning. That was a very well told and touching story, and a beautiful tribute to Wes Cook; thank you.
@xoxo pretty amazing set of talks!
