@nixCraft really good of them to do it but the choice of license is bewildering.
@stinerman @nixCraft when they announced that it will be open sourced, they didn't claim it would be foss.
so the source code being released under a proprietary license shouldn't really be surprising.
@trzyglow @stinerman @nixCraft But then, what's the fucking point?

@rejzor idrk what goes on inside those people's heads; free labour, i guess...

edit:
just to be clear: i totally agree with you on this.

@trzyglow Yeah, I think they just want ppl to make free contribution and they want to still fully own it and control it.

@rejzor @trzyglow @stinerman @nixCraft nullsoft wants free labor. That's the point. With that said, and this is something I've never said since starting to use winamp in the late 90's:

Fuck winamp.

@parke @trzyglow @stinerman @nixCraft I've migrated to MusicBee on PC and on my phone I'm using AIMP.
@stinerman @nixCraft very likely it is a compromise with old authors not willing to make it FOSS.

@nixCraft

Llamas, asses, and whipping, oh my!

@nixCraft I’ve been waiting like twenty years for this, I mean damn, at this point I’ve waited so long I’ve switched to vinyl
@nixCraft That license must be a joke right?
@nixCraft
And it's a shit show. People are mad (understandably) at the License and the issue list is telling.
@nixCraft But not open source and basically worthless to anyone not interested in, like, giving free labor to Winamp.
@nixCraft Neat! Unfortunately it requires too many Microsoft products like DirectX, It could be really painful to convert to Linux.
@nixCraft I was hoping it will come to Linux. Then I read the license...
@nixCraft sure just ignore that the license doesn't allow sharing changes

@nixCraft

The license:

“The Winamp Collaborative License is a free, copyleft license”

Also the license:

“Versions: You may not distribute modified versions of the software, whether in source or binary form.

No Forking: You may not create, maintain, or distribute a forked version of the software.

Official Distribution: Only the maintainers of the official repository are allowed to distribute the software and its modifications.”

@nixCraft
What a shitshow oO from the license choice to the inclusion of copyrighted code from third parties this was neither planned nor executed well 🫣
@nixCraft github.com/WinampDesktop/winamp/issues/11 They published the source code of the Winamp player, they first posted their certificate for signing applications for 10 thousand dollars, and then the shoutcast server, in a word, professionalism. #proxmox
tree includes source code for SHOUTcast DNAS · Issue #11 · WinampDesktop/winamp

Hi, in /Src/Plugins/DSP/sc_serv3 is the source code of the SHOUTcast server software, which... I guess nowadays requires a user or subscription to just even receive the binaries? Not sure if this i...

@nixCraft we are now free to whip the lama's ass !
@nixCraft Oh nice. I found my old MP3 backups just yesterday because of too many online ads. Can't wait for my kids to listen to music without paying money to enshittified platforms.
@nixCraft I feel that companies open their source when there is no hope to make it relevant again.
@freevolt24 @nixCraft They'd make it fully open and free and let people evolve it.
@nixCraft it really used to whip the llama’s ass
