The parade of auto-opted-in services promos and interruptions continues.

Got this sports banner interrupting me last night on my brand new iPhone.

Apparently Sports.app opted itself into Live Activities, despite not having them enabled on the old phone, and having *never even launched the app* on the new one.

@marcoarment it seems to be Apples new method of insuring we know about all the features they have been adding.

And it kind of Stinks.

Now we have to opt out of all that automated interoptibility we may never have cared for, rather than opting in.

@Chancerubbage @marcoarment Just think about the poor middle manager at Apple who has some KPIs to hit!!
@marcoarment never having launched it means you must not know about it and we need to rectify that!
@marcoarment meanwhile since updating to iOS18 I can’t get the sports notifications I actively want to use to work. They just… stop. 🤷‍♂️
@marcoarment there has to be tester / builder personal settings built into the OS. Why Apple would risk anticompetitive action at this stage doesn’t make sense. It’s likely gotten so complex and near impossible to blank these personal preferences within the master image.
@marcoarment It’s the universe trying to get you to care about sports.
@marcoarment they’ve called you 47 times to ask for your consent.
@marcoarment The fact that the screenshot shows 9:41 is not lost on me.
@ddlevine Total coincidence, but me too!
@marcoarment I think it is just broken code. I’ve been filing feedbacks against defaults not holding within Springboard all summer. Stupid stuff too, like icon light/dark settings.
@marcoarment It wont even give you the correct scores. I told everyone that Brentford had gone 1-2 up against Spurs today, which it turns out was nonsense. That’s table stakes for a sports scoring App.

@marcoarment I should have mentioned, lots of *really* important settings appear to also be messed uo 🤪

@marcoarment I swear I deleted all my teams and leagues (and disabled live activities) long ago on my old phone. On my new phone, live activities were re-enabled *and* my old teams/leagues reappeared (probably due to sync bugs, not malice).
@siracusa @marcoarment Also had some notification weirdness with this years transfer. Mail re-enabled notifications. I’ve had those badges off through a decade of transfers! Also lost my CarPlay app orders/settings and had to re-configure some Home controls in control centre.

@siracusa @marcoarment meanwhile for those of us who care about the local sports team, this feature is wonderful
@siracusa @marcoarment I suddenly had notifications enabled on shared calendars and shared reminders that were previously off.
@siracusa @marcoarment Could be that when resolving conflicts, it prefers the set with data to the set without.

@marcoarment Isn’t the sports live activity technically run out of the TV app?

Edit: oh nevermind, looks like they just changed it with iOS 18. Now run out of Sports.

@marcoarment still have an eye popping 47 badge on the phone app 😂😂😂
@marcoarment Very weird. On my IPhone 15 pro, the Sports app asked for permission to enable live activities.
@marcoarment it feels like this is in lieu of promoting their products in traditional forums. In the iPod age it felt like Apple aggressivelike promoted their products. Now it feels like they don't think they have to to the detriment of those products and platforms.
@marcoarment This is interesting my experience was almost opposite. I did have live activities for the Red Sox games through the TV app and with the new phone they were disabled and I needed to manually set it in Sports.

@marcoarment Live activities worked before the Sports app if you had favorited a sports team in Apple TV+. I’m pretty sure they used that as the test bed for live activities in the Sports app across the board.

Also noting I had it all turned on and accepted prior to iOS 18 and new device and was promoted to allow it again.

@marcoarment more important though are those missed calls or voicemails?!?
@marcoarment weird. I’ve opted in previously and when I upgraded to iOS 18 it asked me if I wanted to continue to get live scores. Bug maybe?
@marcoarment Surely everybody loves sportsball as much as Eddy Cue! Think of it like a certain U2 album….
@marcoarment also happening on my 13 mini… but live activities on the MLB doesn’t ever update so as a Yankee fan I was glad it popped up even though I haven’t opened the app since it launched 😂
@marcoarment
TIL Apple has a “Sports” app. Either I deleted it and forgot or the app has never been installed on my phone automatically.
@marcoarment It's not installed on my 16 pro max, out of the box at least
