LinkedIn is "TikTok" for middle aged people.

You know how older people are always scared of TikTok messing up young people's minds with disinformation and bullshit, of influencers getting kids to do dumb shit for their profit? That's exactly what LinkedIn does for middle aged people: A constant stream of weird influencers selling absolute garbage to people who are unsure about what their job means and what they care about.

@tante i always saw it as people who usually make fun of nerds larping as adults
@DrVeronikaCH @hagen @tante Wait.... There are people who use it for socialising? Influencing? That's a weird choice.
@GinevraCat @DrVeronikaCH @hagen @tante Wait til you find out how many men use it as a dating platform…
@tante Tiktok is full of valuable and interesting content. Can't say the same for LinkedIn.

@tante lol i realized not too long ago that linkedin is my single oldest contiguous social media account (now 21 years or something) which is funny because in those 21 years i've had exactly one opportunity through it (and only 2 years ago) and it turned out to be unserious

i've noticed the people who really vibe with it though are all of a kind

@doriantaylor @tante My account there is also the oldest extant social account I have. It survived so long because it's been so very easy to ignore.
@roadskater @tante hahaha exactly
@roadskater @tante i mean that and linkedin is basically unkillable

@tante 🥳 Genau!

@tante
I always used to call it Facebook for grown-ups. I do sometimes reconsider the 'grown-up' bit, but to be fair I haven't looked at either for a couple of years now, so what do I know.
@marijeangordon @tante You know, I wouldn’t be too surprised to find that in several American states, the average age of a Facebook user was higher than that of a Linkindin user…
@tante I use LinkedIn purely as an online CV. Even a casual scroll of my timeline there leaves me feeling vaguely as if I barfed and then ate my own barf
@tante Also, I keep getting hit up by random people from developing countries trying to sell me their services as social media marketing consultants
@tante linkedin is hell. _but_ I suspect it will be the last platform standing, because it is the only one that delivers an actually useful service to its users: keeping track of what your former office worker colleagues are up to these days, so you can find a new job.
@bjoernstaerk @tante TO be honest, I have used it to check up on a few people. Still puzzled about the fave bartender with a degree in international relations and how she transitioned to computer security.
@tante
I'm unsure about what my job means but at least I hate LinkedIn from the very bottom of my heart.
@tante I stopped using it a couple of years ago. Had good communications with friendly folk (way more than on here), but kept getting reported by weird sources for perfectly acceptable posts. Wouldn't jump through the hoops they required for me to rejoin. So this is it for now, unsatisfactory in many ways, but at least ethical.
@tante You are indeed right in that there are plenty of "here's the 10 steps to do <blah>" or "I've just got these certification - here". It is slowly losing the credibility. I guess it is a function of how the users tolerate the erosion and how some keep pushing the norms.

@tante I hate it hate it hate it so much. And yet, I’ve gotten multiple jobs through it.

Basically only hop on when laid off.

@tante an ad blocker should block the domain, TBH
@tante Mine got hacked and someone deleted images of my qualification certificates. After that didn’t bother with it.
Exclusive: TikTok Confirms Some U.S. User Data Is Stored In China

TikTok has said under oath that Americans’ data has always been stored outside China. Now it’s saying there are big exceptions for creators.

Forbes
@martinfridolin @tante that’s why I don’t use ticktock
@martinfridolin @tante But the US, where subpoenas are frequently issued forcing companies to hand over data without telling users, is absolutely A OK? Come on now
@amy YES i agree and i know, but i cant escape because all our companies force us to use the US-Systems/software, thats already to much, i don`t want more companies / countries to use may data
@martinfridolin @tante The article is clear that unless you are a paid creator your TikTok data is not stored in China.
Moreover, your personal data, from US companies, is available for purchase to anyone, including China, so maybe review your double standards.

The FTC’s unprecedented move against data brokers, explained

It could signal more aggressive action from policy makers to curb the corrosive effects that data brokers have on personal privacy.

MIT Technology Review
@emilion
thanks, i didnt know they sell their data to anyone
@martinfridolin @tante same for me w/ #USA re: anything I'd not publish anyway...
@tante I call it Facebook for Business.
@tante i’m having a positive experience on LinkedIn. Who and what channels are you following to get such a bad experience?
@tante would like there to be any reasonable alternative that goes back to professional networks. I only have that, and this mastodon, so burning down my LI account isn't quite something I'm ready to do, but I'm absolutely going to love doing it when it happens.
@tante Spot on. This is the reason I really only use it to find a job when I need to. Even then it seems to be getting more difficult.

@tante

I have a good friend who has done it very well creating a few strong relationships and a large following from just being authentic.

I get bombarded with AI spam and superficial conversations and ADS.

My personal plan is not to use it, as with all free platforms you are the product, but it's got too unuseable for me atm.

Is there a Open Source version? No ADS, or AI?

@tante combined with a whole heap of social peacocking

@tante LinkedIn is such a mess. Everyone at work was pushed to create an account but I've not logged in for years

It's all about the "endorse me for this and I'll endorse you for that" culture

Its one big corporate circle-jerk with wannabe gurus spreading inane rubbish

It's a security problem too. The only place I've had information scraped/leaked is LinkedIn

@tante @ploum I have the feeling that everyone on Linkedin knows what everyone is saying is pure BS, but we all pretend we're sincere
@tante you mean some people actually read things people say on linkedin? Why would they do that...
@tante It is literal Hell on Earth.
@tante I’ve been on linkedin since it was in beta. It started out like a glorified rolodex. That was the high point in my opinion.
@tante each to their own. LinkedIn is predominantly a recruitment space for grown ups. It has never pretended to be anything else.
@tante my LinkedIn profile is blowing up with followers and it's a great spot for sharing sales funnel content, but yeah, I get what you're saying. It does feel kinda off being there, but that's where I get leads, so... bruh
@tante It come as a great surprise to me that LinkedIn with all its weirdness would become more useful than Twitter for getting people interested in my niche open source work.
Perhaps I should try TikTok, too? ;-)

@tante

And then throw in a ton of captain obvious circle jerking proudly telling everyone their great concept on how to manage a business that has been known for decades.

Somehow Linkedin turned into something worse than Facebook and that is quite the achievement.

@tante

Heh.

I deleted my account ten years ago when I opened it up one day and discovered I never wanted to work for or with 95% of the posters. :D

I mean...and now I'm retired and fill up my days with worthwhile stuff: cute dogs, cozy games, and lunch with my husband.

@tante meanwhile, I’ve found TikTok a surprisingly healthy influence and my houseplants appreciate it too (I follow a lot of botany/ecology folks)
@tante I’ve never quite understood the people who use it as a social network, as opposed to a CV substitute. Deeply weird website.
@tante Okay. Any suggestions how to fix it?
@tante
That's not an argument against banning a foreign owned media outlet like TikTok. That's an argument for getting off Linkedin.
@tante Who even pays attention to LinkedIn?
@tante LinkedIn is a catwalk for people and companies.
@tante I still find it amazing how people willingly prostitute themselves so much for their workplace on this "platform where your boss watches with you".

@tante
I've managed to get called a “communist” there for saying that a company could have less earnings and not layoff workers.

So achievement get ^_^J

@tante what about those of us who find both LinkedIn and tick tok entirely repulsive? 🤮
@tante Definitely, all the BS about being so dedicated your job you took calls while giving birth or hired a homeless person on a whim and now they're vice president... It's all theatre from people who probably get off on bullying their staff...
@tante tbh the biggest crime is that in some cases you literally can't get a job in the industry you're trained for without being on LinkedIn
@tante after leaving twitter when that went to hell, I tried LI for a while as a network thing (instead of just updating my resume and job searching every other year). I left Facebook over a decade ago, but LI really gave me the same feeling. Staged videos for comments and likes, and getting followers by posting blatant mass pandering. I uninstalled it from my phone and went back to only updating my resume on there every quarter.
@tante
The best thing that happened to me this year was Linkedin blocking my account after 3 unsucessful login attempts #freedom
