Last year the NYPD spent $150 Million to catch people who weren't able to afford to pay the subway fare. They collectively owed just $104,000 in fares.

Instead of funding cops to shoot people, why not use the money to make public transport free for people who can't afford it?

The NYPD Spent $150 Million to Catch Farebeaters Who Cost the MTA $104,000 - Hell Gate

The massive increase coincided with just a two percent decrease in serious crime.

@luckytran if there was no fear of enforcement, it might be a big problem.
@mister914 @luckytran
If stopping enforcement meant fare evasion happened a thousand times more than it does now, they would still be saving almost $50M.
@jargoggles @mister914 @luckytran Thank you for saving me the breath of responding to the whataboutist.
@mister914 Thats some grade A prime boot licking right there.
Public Transit could be free for everyone with all the money spent to prevent fare evasion.
@mister914 @luckytran the same number of trains would run, I don't see how punishment of fare evasion is relevant if rides are free

@BayesForDays @mister914 @luckytran

But if we didn't punish people for being poor, how will i know I'm a better person for having money?

@mister914 @luckytran they don't do this for parking tickets, though, do they? Seems like shooting at people because of fines or other minor offenses is perhaps a little bit much.

Imagine if they chased down and beat/shot jaywalkers? Yea. It's the same thing.

There's such a thing as a "proportionate response" and this isn't that.

@draeath @luckytran it should be free, but that's not the policy.

Today, the Quebec government wants to cut train services due to lack of riders. The government will cut the service if the revenues drop.

@draeath @luckytran I hope violence is the minority of enforcement interactions.

When I rode the trains daily, I saw people ticketed, but never saw someone run or get physically involved with the officers.

@luckytran it's insane what New York is put through by its corrupt political class.
It's a great city of the World, it deserves much better than the trash leading it
@luckytran That would make too much sense.

@luckytran Important to point out that "fare evasion" is a common topic of discussion at MTA board meetings.

The real evaders are drivers, who found a champion when Governor Hochul illegally refused to start charging them for a portion of the cost of accommodating the oversized easy chairs they insist on bringing into Manhattan.

MTA Announces Progress on Reducing Subway Fare Evasion

MTA
@capntransit @luckytran @TheWarOnCars
You can bet if somebody didn’t pay a toll driving into the city from the suburbs cops wouldn’t chase them down and shoot them
Governor Hochul Announces MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers, NYPD and Law Enforcement Partners Impound Nearly 1,500 Vehicles Through 25 Joint Enforcement Operations Focusing on Ghost Plates and Persistent Toll Violators in 2024

Governor Hochul announced that law enforcement have impounded 1,540 vehicles, made 339 arrests and issued 12,007 summonses.

Governor Kathy Hochul
@luckytran They are so proud of being ridiculous 😝 and firing on each other in the meantime 😆
@luckytran That sort of wasteful nonsense shows up all over the place. It’s purely political, ironically driven by politicians who say they want more efficient public services.
@luckytran
just so the number is out there: that is 99.93% loss on investment.
@luckytran still far more common than voting fraud!
@luckytran Wow! Talk about penny wise pound foolish.

@luckytran

I need someone to make this math make sense.

Worst ROI ever

@luckytran for $150M you could just make it free. For everyone.
@luckytran Make public transit free for EVERYONE! Saves on enforcement. Saves on equipment, maintenance and staffing involved in fare collection. Jobs displaced can be changed to provide better services to riders through information booths, sanitation, etc. Removes fare-cards, needs for system upgrades… savings go way beyond the police expenditures.
@sigsegv @luckytran "the purpose of a system is what it does" - the beneficiaries of all that wasted money don't want to give it up.
@luckytran I think the answer is... "We have more fun and get paid more by doing it this way"
@luckytran And also free for those who can afford it. Removing fare jumping as a possibility also makes it slightly less likely that cops chasing people into the trains and platforms will shoot double the number of bystanders as suspects, and an equal amount of other cops.

@log

@luckytran Because NYC (even absent all the corruption and grift taking good money from providing transport) doesn't have enough money for all the service it needs to run. Most people can afford to pay a small fare and would prefer better service to a free ride. It is only a minority that cannot afford fares (likely most of those the MTA caught could afford a fare) and need help - we should help them, but the vast majority of people would be better off if their money went to better service. The world would be better off too if fares went to better service - how many people would give up their car if service was better (hint a lot more than would give up their car for free fares)

@luckytran

In Germany, we know this problem very well:
The same nonsense.

@luckytran

Because there would be no profit to be found in that for the rich caste.

@luckytran
If you don't earn enough to pay taxes, you get a free or half-price fare card.
@luckytran
Does this amount include settlements for their violent actions against civilians?
@luckytran Shoot 4 people for $2.90
@luckytran @SRDas If you’re spending nearly $1500 for every dollar you lost, something tells me it’s not about the money.
@luckytran its almost as if its was never about the money but about control.

@luckytran

I know I have come to this late , but what the fuck are police doing at train stations in the first place

Are the travellers using the subways in NYC such a lawless bunch that armed guards are required.

@luckytran Or maybe even free entirely, which would save on infrastructure.

@luckytran

~ the cruelty is the point ~

@luckytran or … just free.. and reliable.
@luckytran Your tax dollars hard at work, funding corruption at the highest levels.

@luckytran That's insane. Most transit agencies who do charge spend way less on enforcement because there are diminishing returns. Rather than just throw stupid amounts at the NYPD, use the money to lower fares or make them free. Or even just improve things, $150m would go a long way renovating stations to be cleaner

If fares must be collected tap in tap out would probably have the same effect, be a one off cost, defund the NYPD and most importantly stop the NYPD shooting people for a $3 fare

@luckytran
This is the fiscal responsible and ethical answer. Almost sure they'll do something else.
