By putting most of the good stuff on the plain iPhone 16—which is good, to be clear!—it's going to make it that much harder to differentiate the iPhone 16 Pro. “Fewer colors, 5x camera, and more money” probably isn’t a great slogan. Let's see what they've got…
@siracusa really hope they have a few surprises
@siracusa
I want a bright blue Pro
@siracusa Not to worry. They'll just ditch the colors once they get tired of playing with that. I'm surprised they haven't done so on the iMacs yet..
@siracusa "shiny”
@BenRiceM @siracusa “IPhone 16 Pro -your friends will know you’re richer!”
@Chuck_ORourke normally I’d just buy the pro so people know I’m rich but the new colors are selling me on the non-Pro 😂 @BenRiceM @siracusa
@rconti @BenRiceM @siracusa Don't do it! Being uninterested in colors is super masculine so the Pro model is a twofer. Shows your rich and alpha!
@siracusa I anticipate “marginally bigger” to be a key differentiator
@fcloth @siracusa …we’re still talking about phones, right?
@siracusa But wait! There’s more… weight.
@siracusa Two middle colours look basically the same
@siracusa They put a lot emphasis on cooling though..

@siracusa They could literally do nothing and people will still buy it because it has “Pro" in the name.

I've forever been of the opinion that a "Pro" iPhone shouldn't even exist. All of the features are almost immediately forgotten about (Dynamic Island. Action Button. Always On.)

@siracusa I mean, I am in a position I can afford a Pro, but I don’t see that I will gain anything worth the price increase … it happened the same with my prior iPhone, I went with the “plain” 12
@siracusa is this A18 just a binned A18 Pro?
@siracusa huh, larger cache in Pro vs non-Pro. And more!
@siracusa There’s a colossal amount of bloat in these events now. Who is all of this detail and waffle even for, really? Would they sell a single iPhone less if they cut out the hundreds of “up to 20%” this and “2x” that? So lazy and self indulgent.
@siracusa Still pondering how cases will work with the new shutter button…
@kg @siracusa Apple is using a pass thru button that transfers touch to actual button. Everyone else will just have a hole.

@marcintosh @kg @siracusa
That’s a bummer, since I consider this a key feature and Apple no longer offers any cases I like.

Just having an opening for the new button will significantly reduce the appeal of third party cases, while Apple fails to offer a desirable first party option.

@marcintosh @kg @siracusa

I find myself really hung up on the camera button-case situation. This is derailing what would otherwise have been an insta-buy for me. 🫠

@freediverx @kg @siracusa Honestly, Apple doesn’t think you need a case. They really only offer them for “one stop shoppers.”

@marcintosh @kg @siracusa
Apple executives don’t need cases because they don’t have a life outside of their Apple Park office walls and they can get replacement phones as easily as I get a sheet of tissue from a box of Kleenex.

Even if you pay for AppleCare+ as I do, a caseless iPhone is just too slippery for any active use. Also I hate scratches.

Edit: Sorry I know you were being facetious. I haven’t had my coffee yet, lol.

@freediverx @marcintosh @siracusa I spent the evening last night looking through spigen’s (my current case) 16 pro max offerings. They are doing BOTH a cutout and a physical button for shutter. Kinda pricey and I have not decided which way I will go… I think I like the slimmer cutout ones, but have not fully committed.

iPhone 16 Series

@kg @marcintosh @siracusa
How can they make a physical button for the camera while supporting the haptic feedback?
@freediverx @kg @marcintosh The same way Apple does on its cases.
@siracusa @kg @marcintosh
Has Apple licensed the Camera Control button with the fancy sapphire crystal/conductive layer to third party case makers? (Sorry if this is widely known. I haven’t had time to dig into all these details yet.)

@siracusa @kg @marcintosh

Ah, I see Apple is licensing the tech to some third party case makers. This wouldn’t have been a big deal back when I preferred Apple’s own leather cases. But now I dislike all their offerings, and I only consider their silicone cases suitable for use in wet/dirty conditions rather than as a primary option.

@freediverx @kg @marcintosh I don’t think there’s anything to license.
@siracusa @kg @marcintosh
Maybe I’m overthinking it. Thought they patented it or something.
@siracusa The only “Pro" camera feature I want is a software setting to dial down the default sharpening.
@siracusa did they ever mention how much ram is going into the non-pros? I’m assuming it’s at least 8 GB…
@nbomb Apple (still) doesn’t like to talk about RAM in iPhones.
@siracusa My iPhone SE gen 1 still works grand!
@siracusa Are there any camera differences between ween 16 Pro and Pro Max? I would wanth the best camera /sensor but if they’re the same in both, I’d definitely prefer a smaller size. And did the announce the maximum amount of storage?
@arguementclinic I think the cameras on the Pro and the Pro Max are the same, but check Apple’s website to be sure.

@arguementclinic @siracusa

They both max out at 1TB, but the Pro offers a 128GB option, while the Max starts at 256GB.

The camera specs appear identical.

Apple
@siracusa I think the iphone pro has finally plateaued. imho the only thing that makes it worth it is the ProMotion and perhaps (under doubt) the 5x, but honestly, the "regular" iphone should have had ProMotion by now. this seems to just be greedy, stingy upselling. It feels like they could have skipped this years pro altogether. and why have they seemingly given up on AirPods Max? Why no H2 and feature parity with AirPods Pro 2? Looking forward to ATP analysis of this event.

@siracusa higher frame rate, HDR. Sound capture features. Some will be jazzed. It’s just that the higher tier isn’t leaving the lower tier in the dust as much.

But they did not direct compare- someone else will have to do that.

They knocked ‘good enough’ out of the park.

@siracusa how does the 16 (non pro) lack 120hz refresh rate?!?
@siracusa 10gbps usb-c transfer rate vs 480mbps on non-pro

@siracusa the extra camera and the file transfer speed will make the difference for me.

That blue though …
