My dear friend Adam Savage, starting about 3:50 in this video, gives a beautiful description of the history of the value he’s found as a creative person in being a denizen of the Bay Area, especially San Francisco, since his first experience here in the late 80s.

Really lovely and compelling:

@Drwave I related to that video because I have the exact opposite reaction to San Francisco (and all the parts of California I’ve visited). He’s right: it starts with stuff as fundamental as the light, the air, and the land! Amazing how strongly people feel that kind of connection (or non-connection, in my case).
@siracusa Fascinating. I appreciate the honesty of your reaction even while I (a Bay Area lifer) am baffled by it.
@jsnell @siracusa @Drwave Is it just me, or is rainbow a *weird* choice for a data visualization gradient?
@jsnell @siracusa @Drwave As an Iowan I’d notch that range of comfortable down a bit. I’ll take 55 over 83 any day (it’s been upper 80s into the 90s all week)
@ehler @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave As someone from the midatlantic, I gotta agree. I’d prefer 50° over 80° any day
@jsnell @siracusa @Drwave Interesting map. Hawaii is zero 🤨 😂
@Bracl @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave as a Hawaii resident, I vehemently disagree.
@jsnell @siracusa @Drwave this map answers the question “why does Casey say that California doesn’t have weather”
@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave as an east coast native I was wondering why San Jose wasn't constantly panicking about months of no rain when I first moved there. As a bike commuter who had ridden through snow before it was great, but as someone who knows living things need water to live I had so many concerns
@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave it Also answers the question why is California the most populous state. ;)

@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave I would like some
more seasons. Or the illusion of them. No place is perfect.

Also, I am getting a heat pump installed. This chart is a lie. When you aren’t used to “weather”, when it happens, it smacks you in the face. You aren’t prepared.

@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave I would argue the opposite. We have all the weather and we can choose what we want at any given moment. Want snow? Go to the Sierras. Want sunny? Go to the desert (San Jose is arguably a desert). Want to cool off? Head to the coast.

And yes, we do have an autumn, even in San Jose 😊

@miketaffet @caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave Yep.

I could surf and snowboard on the same day, if I felt so inclined.

@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave Hey! We have weather! I need to wear a light jacket in the morning during winter!
@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa @Drwave Coming soon to the Incomparable podcast network, “Weather or Not” with Casey Liss.

@caseyliss @jsnell @siracusa I grew up in Chicago, worked in FL and Cambridge, I went to school in Wales and MA, lived in Brooklyn.

I have learned to appreciate finer distinctions in weather; I don’t need it to vacillate between freezing and torrid; arctic and humid.
I like my 50 to 80 F degree ranges.

You can keep your weather.

@jsnell I was stationed at the DLI in Monterey for 18 months. Really miss the weather there.
@jsnell Due point equal or lower than 60! So dry ☠️
@jsnell we know that @siracusa wouldn’t be happy if he was happy. He likes it better this way.

@jsnell

Jason, tangentialy related. Did you ever look into the Tempest Weather System? Saw it linked to a you tube channel and thought it looked interesting.

@ASH_2000 I haven't, I bought a Davis and it lasted 18 years so I figured I'd just buy another.

@jsnell

Thanks much. Turns out Tempest doesn’t have an external screen so off the list.

@siracusa @Drwave @jsnell I visited SF some years ago. My father in law was a visiting prof at Berkeley and had a house in El Cerrito. We loved our time there and could have happily moved from AUS. Had a weekend at Yosemite, staying overnight in Sonora. Visited a net-friend in Mill Valley. A great time, and fell in love. Fantastic city.
My sister and brother-in-law, (he’s from Ny) have not been out west. coast thing?
(How long ago? I typed my travel diary on a Newton with keyboard)

@siracusa @Drwave We moved to Virginia in 2019 and I very much prefer California.

It’s mostly really nice here in Virginia but the summers are soul sucking.

I was born and lived in California most of my life. That probably has a lot to do with it. 😁

@fahrni @siracusa @Drwave after growing up on the beach in santa cruz we moved to austin (for complicated reasons).

i dearly miss california — mostly for the people, but also the sea lions i could hear from my bedroom window, the coastal redwoods i grew up in, and sometimes, if i’m honest, i even miss the fog a little.

austin has been very nice too. the people are friendly and mostly open minded. but now that we’re empty nesters were definitely itching to find a way back again.
