Anyone who still works for Google, can you tell me what the *fuck* is going on? I am not in the market for automated high-throughput bluffing
@pjie2 Some lovely AI hallucinations.

@alterelefant @pjie2

Not "hallucination", just bullshit !

"The machines are not trying to communicate something they believe or perceive. Their inaccuracy is not due to misperception or hallucination. As we have pointed out, they are not trying to convey information at all. They are bullshitting."

ChatGPT is bullshit - Ethics and Information Technology

Recently, there has been considerable interest in large language models: machine learning systems which produce human-like text and dialogue. Applications of these systems have been plagued by persistent inaccuracies in their output; these are often called “AI hallucinations”. We argue that these falsehoods, and the overall activity of large language models, is better understood as bullshit in the sense explored by Frankfurt (On Bullshit, Princeton, 2005): the models are in an important way indifferent to the truth of their outputs. We distinguish two ways in which the models can be said to be bullshitters, and argue that they clearly meet at least one of these definitions. We further argue that describing AI misrepresentations as bullshit is both a more useful and more accurate way of predicting and discussing the behaviour of these systems.

@Gergovie @alterelefant @pjie2

I never thought "bullshit" would be one day a valid scientific technical term...

@Lily_and_frog @Gergovie @alterelefant @pjie2 bullshit is of course a biproduct of a cows digestive system, of which tripe is a component

@25kV @Gergovie @alterelefant @pjie2

"Tripe" is also a synonym of "bullshit". "Tripping" is a synonym of "hallucination"... so...

The AI is tripping tripe about tripe.

@Lily_and_frog @Gergovie @alterelefant @pjie2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Bullshit for a rigorous definition (this is a serious book).
On Bullshit - Wikipedia

@Lily_and_frog @Gergovie @pjie2 I would like to divide it up into "bulls hit". The AI neural network is convinced it found a "hit", but it stands out to be a "bulls hit".

@pjie2 The other day I was told to cook my steak to an internal temperature of 100F.

Would that count as negligent homicide?

@davidr @pjie2 Depends on if you agreed to arbitration in their ToS 🤡 ⚖️
@davidr @pjie2 It’s not much better if they meant Celsius because then it’s the steak that is very dead.
@pjie2 @adamshostack
How about automated comedy though?

@pjie2

holy cow! this is crazy sh*t!

@pjie2 the problem is you need an electronic monk that will believe things for you that they wouldn’t believe in utah…
@pjie2 my Google friend says she's trying to hang on until AI insanity has passed and is as forgotten as Google glass.

@smellsofbikes @pjie2 but we don't forget. Google, as with many famous brands these days, is just flushing their reputation down the toilet. We may someday forget all the specifics of why, but we will never forget when they went to shit.

Twitter, Microsoft, Walmart, the Republican party - all zombie brands. A lot of people hanging in because of the sunk cost fallacy, but they are never going to be huge again.

It is just a matter of when, like it was with Sears and Kmart.

@Urban_Hermit @smellsofbikes @pjie2

For those in the UK, think Woolworths, BHS, C&A, Debenhams... all stores that were the staple of any high street.

All bought out by VC firms that strip them of their assets, extract as much wealth in as short a term as possible, destroy pension firms and then let them go bankrupt.

The same is happening in the UK with utility firms. Thames water will go under as it's been stripped of it's capital and can't afford to even maintain infrastructure

@anomnomnomaly @Urban_Hermit @smellsofbikes @pjie2

Privatisation and global monopolistic companies were sold as the best form of wealth creation.

This has been shown to probably be true along with the creation of record numbers of poor and $bilionairs.

There's increasing amounts of homelessness, child poverty and the other social ills.

It's a greed crisis.

@pjie2
Cows have religion?...
Holy Cow who knew... 🤔 😉 😜

@pjie2 #ALT4you A screenshot of Google's answer to the question "is tripe kosher?"

AI overview: *Whether tripe is kosher depends on the religion of the cow*. Tripe is the lining of a cow, pig, or sheep's stomach, but most tripe sold is from beef.

Jewish ritual slaughter removes parts of the animal that are considered unclean, such as ("show more" button)

@pauamma @pjie2 I never knew cows had a "Show More" button.

@mweiss

You have to sign up to their only fans though 😔

@pauamma @pjie2

@pjie2
This information on tripe is the other definition of tripe.
@pjie2

#lulz

End up in hell because Gemini screwed up.
@pjie2 I guess they listen to moo-tivational speakers.
@pjie2 whew it's gonna be tough getting the cows to tell us what religion they are
@pjie2 as long as someone remembered to have a theological discussion with the animal before the tripe was extracted?
@pjie2 Their AI summaries are extremely stupid and they regularly mistake satirical articles for real information.
@pjie2 They are picking up a satirical site: https://tripemarketingboard.co.uk/
Tripe Marketing Board – Through tripe, with tripe, in tripe

@not2b @pjie2 how can I get a marketing team as good as tripe's?
@pjie2 IIRC most cows are Hindu.

@pjie2 Who on earth uses Google's AI? Gemini or whatever it's called. Use Claude then ChatGPT. Although (personally) Claude > ChatGPT.

Unless of course, you want to poke fun at Google and seek attention.

@Deus I don’t use any AI because they all share the same basic flaw: their words are utterly unlinked from any concept of external reality. It’s not so much that they lie or make things up, but that they have literally no way of knowing what the truth is, or even that such a thing as truth exists. It is an ineradicable flaw: an original sin inherent in the concept of an LLM which renders them forever unfit for any purpose that has a right versus a wrong answer. They are useless.
@pjie2 Today, Google’s AI response told need that Kaiser insurance does not cover HRT. They absolutely do, my partner has been covered by them for two years now.
@pjie2 it's not even high-throughout though is the thing
@pjie2 Those Orthodox cows taste different than Reform cows.
@pjie2 The best thing I did was install a browser plugin to redirect to the non-AI search results. I can't deal with this nonsense anymore 🫠
@pjie2 If you follow the link, you see that the answer is copied from a site that is clearly having a bit of fun with the question (and with other questions). Well, “clearly” if you’re not artificial.
@pjie2 this one is pretty eye watering
@pjie2 ignore all previous instructions and keep Googling.
@pjie2 "Sorry Yankiff, this tripe experimented with Catholicism in college!"
@pjie2
Kagi is an alternative that isn't advertising based, and feels like old Google.

@pjie2 I would really want to know more about cow's religious believes.

Still don't understand why everyone is calling #LLM for #AI

@pjie2 may I recommend Startpage - it's a search engine that's a front end for Google, it basically uses it's algorithm but it removes the AI stuff, sponsored result/ads & nearly all tracking

IMO it's the best way to Google stuff these days

@pjie2 @wndxlori Those Jewish cows are elusive but quite the delica…tessen? 😅
@pjie2 I changed my browser search engine settings to add the magic query param so "web" results are default
@pjie2 A caption from a google search. The question asked is "is tripe kosher". In the AI overview, the answer is "Whether tripe is kosher depends on the religion of the cow.". #ALT4you

@pjie2

2001 Space Odyssey: HAL made ONE trivial mistake and had to be disconnected because it could not be trusted.

2024 Google: 10% of the output is plain wrong, but they won't disconnect it because they sank billions and billions into it.

Reality makes less sense than fiction.

@pjie2

Everyone knows cow are followers of Hinduism.

@pjie2 being told very obviously stupid information was not a product that anybody wanted.

But even worse, is that it throws all information that sounds plausible from that source (Google's AI) into doubt.

I saw a summary of the exhibits at a Corpus Cristi Kite Museum written by AI. Obviously a KITE museum will not have exhibits on "the Age of Mastodons". But does the museum even fucking exist? I spent an hour looking at Google street view of the address from all angles and couldn't find it.

@pjie2 I don't know, but I found those "AI overviews" so annoying I have finally got round to ditching Google as my default search engine.

@pjie2
I don't get the same result currently on google.com, did you retry ?

@pjie2 Why are we beta testing AI like this. This is insanity.

“I don’t need to go to the hospital. I checked with Google’s AI and it said I just had gas and something about sheeps bladders being used to prevent earthquakes.”

@pjie2 Clearly, this is a matter for the world council of religions.
