Not "hallucination", just bullshit !
"The machines are not trying to communicate something they believe or perceive. Their inaccuracy is not due to misperception or hallucination. As we have pointed out, they are not trying to convey information at all. They are bullshitting."

Recently, there has been considerable interest in large language models: machine learning systems which produce human-like text and dialogue. Applications of these systems have been plagued by persistent inaccuracies in their output; these are often called “AI hallucinations”. We argue that these falsehoods, and the overall activity of large language models, is better understood as bullshit in the sense explored by Frankfurt (On Bullshit, Princeton, 2005): the models are in an important way indifferent to the truth of their outputs. We distinguish two ways in which the models can be said to be bullshitters, and argue that they clearly meet at least one of these definitions. We further argue that describing AI misrepresentations as bullshit is both a more useful and more accurate way of predicting and discussing the behaviour of these systems.

I never thought "bullshit" would be one day a valid scientific technical term...
@25kV @Gergovie @alterelefant @pjie2
"Tripe" is also a synonym of "bullshit". "Tripping" is a synonym of "hallucination"... so...
The AI is tripping tripe about tripe.

Let alone an academic term!
@pjie2 The other day I was told to cook my steak to an internal temperature of 100F.
Would that count as negligent homicide?
holy cow! this is crazy sh*t!
@smellsofbikes @pjie2 but we don't forget. Google, as with many famous brands these days, is just flushing their reputation down the toilet. We may someday forget all the specifics of why, but we will never forget when they went to shit.
Twitter, Microsoft, Walmart, the Republican party - all zombie brands. A lot of people hanging in because of the sunk cost fallacy, but they are never going to be huge again.
It is just a matter of when, like it was with Sears and Kmart.

For those in the UK, think Woolworths, BHS, C&A, Debenhams... all stores that were the staple of any high street.
All bought out by VC firms that strip them of their assets, extract as much wealth in as short a term as possible, destroy pension firms and then let them go bankrupt.
The same is happening in the UK with utility firms. Thames water will go under as it's been stripped of it's capital and can't afford to even maintain infrastructure

Privatisation and global monopolistic companies were sold as the best form of wealth creation.
This has been shown to probably be true along with the creation of record numbers of poor and $bilionairs.
There's increasing amounts of homelessness, child poverty and the other social ills.
It's a greed crisis.
@pjie2 #ALT4you A screenshot of Google's answer to the question "is tripe kosher?"
AI overview: *Whether tripe is kosher depends on the religion of the cow*. Tripe is the lining of a cow, pig, or sheep's stomach, but most tripe sold is from beef.
Jewish ritual slaughter removes parts of the animal that are considered unclean, such as ("show more" button)
@pjie2 Who on earth uses Google's AI? Gemini or whatever it's called. Use Claude then ChatGPT. Although (personally) Claude > ChatGPT.
Unless of course, you want to poke fun at Google and seek attention.
@pjie2 may I recommend Startpage - it's a search engine that's a front end for Google, it basically uses it's algorithm but it removes the AI stuff, sponsored result/ads & nearly all tracking
IMO it's the best way to Google stuff these days
2001 Space Odyssey: HAL made ONE trivial mistake and had to be disconnected because it could not be trusted.
2024 Google: 10% of the output is plain wrong, but they won't disconnect it because they sank billions and billions into it.
Reality makes less sense than fiction.
Everyone knows cow are followers of Hinduism.
@pjie2 being told very obviously stupid information was not a product that anybody wanted.
But even worse, is that it throws all information that sounds plausible from that source (Google's AI) into doubt.
I saw a summary of the exhibits at a Corpus Cristi Kite Museum written by AI. Obviously a KITE museum will not have exhibits on "the Age of Mastodons". But does the museum even fucking exist? I spent an hour looking at Google street view of the address from all angles and couldn't find it.

which may be the source, or the conclusion, if this particular weirdness.
@pjie2 Why are we beta testing AI like this. This is insanity.
“I don’t need to go to the hospital. I checked with Google’s AI and it said I just had gas and something about sheeps bladders being used to prevent earthquakes.”
