(Explanation: For screwball comedy reasons, Ranma needs to convince Shampoo he is a girl transformed into a guy rather than a guy transformed into a girl. His dad and dad in law, who fully understand Ranma's curse situation, take this seriously, which can only be explained if they think Ranma is coming out as trans. … Unless Takahashi is just making a joke about the dads being really dumb. But Panda Dad isn't THAT dumb.)

It's highly probable that the managaka was familiar with to trans ness, but she was definitely joking on the parents' (ESPECIALLY Ranma's), shall we say, reduced awareness.

I'm going to try to be normal about this, but you should absolutely read Maison Ikkoku. It's equal parts improbable slapstick and very touching, and probably my favorite of Ms. Takahashi's creations.

Jason Petersen (he)@mcc you reading this unlocked a memory of the Ranma movie trailer included in every Pokémon animated series VHS back in the day. The music immediately came back into my head and I searched YouTube to verify. I didn’t have access to a lot of anime and it seemed so mysterious, they didn’t explain much of anything in the trailer.
