For those people who want to privately communicate, you don't need Telegram, Signal is better , more secure and opensource.

@ErikJonker

I use the #FOSS app #Molly for Signal, from #FDroid. It's good.

@leffe @ErikJonker One kick-ass feature that F-Droid pushes since forever are decentralized repositories. While Signal or any forks are not in f-droid.org repo, plenty of enthusiasts host them in their own repos.
@leffe
@ErikJonker
Just hoping #signal will start supporting #UnifiedPush so it can be used without a MollySocket server.

@winfriedtilanus @ErikJonker

I have recently installed ntfy for use with Moshidon, so I'm considering switching to the UnifiedPush version of Molly. It's in the Molly FOSS repository for F-Droid.

Get Molly on F-Droid | Molly

Use F-Droid to install apps and ensure access to app updates.

Got my own setup with the #prosody #XMPP server and #conversations as distributor app. But the signal infrastructure doesn't support webpush, so you need an extra server that registers to the signal push server in between. Not eager to run that one...

@winfriedtilanus @ErikJonker

I'm not familiar with most of that stuff, but are you saying that Molly's UnifiedPush implementation doesn't work like you expected?

@leffe
@ErikJonker
It needs an external component beside in addition to UnifiedPush

@winfriedtilanus @ErikJonker

I have ntfy. Works well for me, but I guess ymmv.

@ErikJonker an even better alternative IMO is @threemaapp
@ErikJonker Other than Signal, also look at Olvid.

Olvid - Private messaging for everyone.

@ErikJonker I would really like tech people to stop answering "Signal" to any message about "Telegram". šŸ˜‰
While Signal is a good app for encrypted communication, using it does not guarantee the secrecy. (no app does)
Telegram in fact is something completely different than Signal. The arrest is not even about secret communication, but about "broadcasting channels", lack of moderation and not responding to law enforcement requests.
@stamberry @ErikJonker I think Telegram is best understood as a blogging platform with an instant messaging feature.
@anderspuck @stamberry ..true, it’s not exactly the same and comparable

@ErikJonker Telegram is not comparable with Signal; stop comparing them. Telegram is a social network app. Compare it with Facebook and its encrypted messages with Facebook Messenger.

That said, neither Signal, nor Telegram are usable to me, since they require a phone number for registration. I've been using Wire for a while and it sucks - but is at least usable.

@bontchev …signal says it’s working on removing the need for a telephone number
@ErikJonker Signal has other problems that make it unusable to me. It requires a smart phone. I don't use those.
@ErikJonker Signal is a Trojan horse
@nubesurrealista … all apps can be Trojan horses, with signal the chance is low because of opensource and third-party audits
@ErikJonker
I so like Signal, have for years. I dread the moment they will decide to leave Europe, but until that time; I use it.
@ErikJonker Anything that requires a phone number is a no go in a dictatorship. Which applies to both of them, I suppose 🤷
@tennoseremel Signal is working on that
@ErikJonker Do they? They may allow hiding, but it is still required.
@tennoseremel You can use a virtual phone number I think
@ErikJonker Which is insecure, and didn’t really work for me the last time I tried (a few years ago, thoough).
@ErikJonker The only official Linux desktop release is for Ubuntu and I have no desire to compile this Electron-powered monster myself, so no, thanks.
