The plastic thing on the juice carton broke, so I had to teach my child the ancient magic.
@eleanorrees Did you also puncture the top on the other side so air comes in as juice goes out, making fewer waves?
Ancient magic will never die out.
Awe-some.
@paul @eleanorrees we had a kitchen-item that was only used for making that hole!
@dada87 How recognisable... Those plastic things are so useless. I still do this.

@eleanorrees
@dada87 @paul @eleanorrees Are you sure that wasn't initially meant to punch holes in condensed milk cans?
@sigi714 @paul @eleanorrees probably, but we never used those.

@dada87

@sigi714

@dada87

@dada87

In meiner Kindheit gabs nur Sunkist, Schulspeisung Milch/Kakao und H-Milch in Tetrapaks. Eistee hat man da noch selber gemacht 😀

@echopapa fancy!

@eleanorrees

The ancient method is way better IMO

@eleanorrees The next step is the magical knowledge of where to fold the tip and where to hold it to be able to tear it off easily (without perforation).
@eleanorrees in the EU you can't cut it off completely, you have to keep it attached to reduce waste 😜

@eleanorrees There's a chocolate oat milk brand that has containers similar to these - and other than the plastic lids tending to leak - the main issue is that no matter how much you tip the container upside down theres somehow always half a mouthful left in the container... needing to be cut open.

I could have sworn we had figured out milk cartons already, it kinda feels backwards that we've added a plastic part and made it worse.

@BenjaminNelan @eleanorrees

The original Tetra Pak was a tetrahedron. Easy to pack for distribution, easy to open, and somewhat easy to pour.

@leffe @eleanorrees That looks way more fun. 🤩
@BenjaminNelan @eleanorrees I think I have their barista oat milk, which has the same issue. The trick is to fold the almost empty container flat and “wring” it out.
@eleanorrees I’m glad every juice and milk carton in America now contains plastic instead of being just paper the way it was 20+ years ago.

@Eleanor Rees this is treason! you are revealing secret ancient wisdom! the god of tetra will punish you for that!
@eleanorrees when I was a kid I wouldn't even use scissors. Just have the side corner open so it could be easily foldable and not have the milk spoil

@eleanorrees

This is a real "Don't speak to me of the deep magic, I was there when it was written," moment and I'm loving it.

@eleanorrees

I had a protein drink where this happened and I just broke the seal with a butter knife and it was actually easier to drink and less of the drink was trapped inside the container.

@eleanorrees

My electric can opener broke a couple of years ago and I found myself using the old school one on my Leatherman to open some tomato paste.

I thought "maybe I should explain this to my son", and he had had no idea what that tool was for.

Maybe it'll save him a couple of hungry hours someday.

@eleanorrees
And I taught my child to use returnable deposit bottles. 🤓

@eleanorrees

I really want to say #BoycottTetraPak, even though I live near their HQ. But I don't see how that could be possible. They have a near total monopoly on this kind of packaging.

In 2022, the company promised to withdraw from Russia, but I can't find any confirmation that they have done that. Instead, they have persisted with applications to be exempt from the EU embargo. For shame!

#tetrapak #StandWithUkraine

@eleanorrees Ach ja, da war ja was.

@eleanorrees

@berlinfokus

My discounter has now milk in purely ancient magic cartons. This is fine.
