Thanks to a donation by @lupo, I've been able to test @OS1337 on a real #EeePC701-4G and so far this seems to have only some minor hiccups.

  • OFC I've first ran into the #137GB barrier with the #BIOS when booting my regular #Vendoy drive but then again at the time the #EeePC was released, 240GB SSDs were unobtanium and would've costed propably more than a dozen 701-4G's retail...
That being said @w84death 's #Floppinux v0.2.1 just booted through fine, so yeah, perfectly feasible as "low end testbed" unless I get like a #VIA #C3 / #C5 / #C7 or one of those expensive #Vortex86-made #486SX clones that @rasteri used for the #WeeCee, tho I'm shure noone would go below a #RaspberryPi #Pi0 / #Pi0W v1.3 or the original #PiModelB v1.2 in terms of #FrugalComputing.

So if anyone wounders how I test @OS1337 without a physical 3,5" FDD ( or a "#FloppyEmulator" hooked up to a system ) I use #Ventoy, which is basically a fancy #ISOLINUX bootloader where one can dump #IMG, #ISO and #VHD onto an #exFAT partition and it'll just boot that!

  • whilst it doesn't emulate a drive on low-level like those fancy #IODD enclosures, it gets the job done...

And yes, OFC some #minimalist #linux-#distro like #TinyCore also runs fine on it, which isn't a surprise given that it's a 20MB ISO and a 512MB RAM, of which 8MB are per default occupied for VRAM aka. the #i915GML's framebuffer.

Needless to say I've to see if @bunsenlabs even runs on this thing and I know that anything #64bit is a complete non-starter as it's just an #i586 / #ix86 machine, so any supported mainstream distro is a nope.

  • Most likely #RasberryPiOS is the most up-to-date option with the biggest user community AFAICT...

And yes, even tho the 512MB stick seems to be an upgrade over the default 256MB, I don't think I'll saturate either in normal testing.

Thanks again @lupo for your donation to making @OS1337 move forward.
