So far today, Day 14 of #CovidJail, I have watched two #movies.

That is to say, I watched one all the way through.
The second, I gave up on one hour in.

The one I finished was #BlackBox with Mamoudou Athie and Phylicia Rashad. It was fine. I guessed the twist the first time Athie's character experienced a jarring memory. The rest of the storyline was wholly predictable. Athie's acting and Amanda Christine's were the only part I can say I enjoyed. Rashad as a mad scientist was fine.

The second movie was #Foe with Saiorse Ronan. Frankly, I kept waiting for something to happen. At the 59 minute mark, when nothing had happened to get me emotionally invested with the characters, I paused and went looking for a synopsis.

The amount of story they had, they could've wrapped that up in 30 minutes. No reason to stretch it nearly 2 hours. *yawn*

I haven't seen #StarshipTroopers since before it earned cult status, so I'ma try that next. 🀞

Okay, #StarshipTroopers, your first 3 minutes are already more hilarious than I remembered.

When I saw this in theaters 27 (!?!!!?!?! wtf) years ago, I was still very much a Heinlein fan and expecting it to be just like the novel. Thus, I despised the movie.

That was definitely about fifty Courtneys ago. πŸ˜†

RICO! RICO!

Rico, pay attention, you dork. Jester's talking to you.

#JestersDead

"I doubt anyone here would recognize civic virtue if it reached up and bit you in the ass."

That seems like a useful quote for diverse situations. 🀣

#StarshipTroopers

Doogie Howser!?!!???!?

#StarshipTroopers

BLANCHE DEVEREAUX❓❗⁉️⁉️❓❗❓⁉️⁉️⁉️❓❗

#StarshipTroopers
#GoldenGirls

"Cyrano, get off my leg!"

I had no idea we'd get into classic literature territory here.

#StarshipTroopers

Whoooooo, these military ads are SO today's politicians posing for Christmas cards with their families and every member armed with AR-15s.

#StarshipTroopers

"Mormon extremists"

😳

#StarshipTroopers

"Do you think I'm funny? Do I make you laugh? Do you think I'm a comedian?"

CLANCY EFFIN BROWN IN DA HOUSE! πŸ˜„

#StarshipTroopers

"DEW YEW *GET* ME?!" 🀣

#StarshipTroopers

Diz already annoys me, but her kicking Rico and Ace into the mud is satisfying. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

#StarshipTroopers

Watching Carmen and her crew flying in their little shuttle, I'm all WHERE ARE THEIR HELMETS?!?

Too much #BattlestarGalactica lately πŸ˜†

#StarshipTroopers

Oh good! Laser tag! πŸ˜€

#StarshipTroopers

Is it still a Dear John(ny) letter if she's in the service too?

#StarshipTroopers

It's all full and games 'til someone gets an eye put out.

Or a brain. 🫀

#StarshipTroopers

I did not remember *anything* from this movie. Guess I hated it so much the first time, I blocked it out. πŸ˜†

#StarshipTroopers

Denise Richards is just an adorable little cutie pie.

#StarshipTroopers

"Arachnid Quarantine Zone" is just not something that should ever need to exist.

#StarshipTroopers

No, Johnny! Don't take the stroll down Washout Lane!

#StarshipTroopers

Hate it when the bugs whack us good, Johnny.

#StarshipTroopers

"WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW *MORE*?"

#StarshipTroopers

Nothing like getting kids to stomp cockroaches like a gang of gleeful sociopaths.

#StarshipTroopers

Nutso drill sergeants, jarheads and fleet officers, fistfight over a girl, get the matching group tats, follow orders without question, utterly destroy the enemy without mercy -- how did 20yo me not see the ridiculous satire of this movie?

Fifty Courtneys ago. At least.

#StarshipTroopers

Mega-giant cockroaches that shoot blue firework rocket bombs out their asses. Neat.

#StarshipTroopers

Diz: Ace, what are we doing?

Ace: Uhhh, I dunno.

Why do I have the feeling that exchange happens in war situations a whole lot more often than any of us realize

#StarshipTroopers

I feel like maybe their ammo is not particularly effective.

#StarshipTroopers

Johnny, no, talk to me, Johnny!

*sigh* Where's a good gif of Guinan when you need one?

#StarshipTroopers
#STTNG πŸ––

#StarshipTroopers

Wait, so the main character just got murdered by a giant assassin bug, but the movie is only half over?

"To fight The Bug, we must understand The Bug."

WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW *MORE*?

#StarshipTroopers

RICO! RICO!
Wake up, nerd, you're dead.

Johnny 5 is alive!

Oh wait. Wrong movie.

#StarshipTroopers

"You don't do your job, I'll shoot you."

Yay, Jester's back!

#StarshipTroopers
#TopGun

The scenes with all the bugs scurrying everywhere make me wanna watch #EdgeOfTomorrow again. I don't even care, I love that movie.

#StarshipTroopers

Monkey-suckin' sack of maggot puke.

Well, that's a new one and a doozy.

#StarshipTroopers

Giant flame-spewing cockroach beetle. Gotta be taken down from above.

Where's Legolas when you need him?

#StarshipTroopers
#SurferElf

Rico, you kill bugs good.

#StarshipTroopers

Ye GAWDS how did I not see this movie for what it is?

THEY'RE PLAYING FUCKIN DIXIE 🀣

#StarshipTroopers

Well Diz, you're finally getting him to lay you. And even Jester understands. I guess. πŸ˜†

#StarshipTroopers

Had to pause to check y'all's replies. Now back at it, and suddenly we've got FLYING BUGS?!?

Ach du meine GΓΌte.

#StarshipTroopers

@courtcan I always hated that. I mean, I got he was the Master Race avatar so she was NATURALLY drawn and THAT'S PART OF THE GROSS SATIRE, but at the same time I was all "aw, Diz, you can be better than this."
@courtcan Sure sign somebody’s gonna croak in one of these movies when they’ve had one perfect moment.

@courtcan
It's coming back to me now. I saw the Starship Troopers movie. A CGI horror. I guess the gore is what comes back to me in fragments, and I'd read the book like a couple of decades earlier which barely helped me understand the movie.

Or I'd read at least part of it. I can't remember if I finished it or not. I remember the circumstances of the reading better than I remember the book.

I was sitting in a bus terminal in the big city of Kansas City where I'd been transported courtesy of the government to take my draft physical. I was nearing graduation from my little Midwestern college and the government was wasting no time as my draft status was going to change soon.

I'd spent the previous night in the crummy KC hotel provided for me and at least a dozen others collected from around the area. I shared a room with some young fellow I'd never met, and he surely was more unusual than most who'd been bussed there.

I recall spending that evening nervously looking out the hotel window at the KC night life, and realizing that this wasn't the best neighborhood I could be in. Being of small town origin it took me awhile to realize what the gawdy dressed ladies walking up and down the sidewalk were up to. The seedy look of the neighborhood (and the unusual roommate) made it hard to sleep.

The next morning I, my roommate, and a dozen or more others were bussed to the location where we were to have the unpleasant experience of the assembly line physical. After that I was then waiting at the bus terminal to use the government provided bus ticket back to the homey comfort of my little college town.

It is only just possible that the draft physical experience overshadowed my recollections of the book.

@courtcan Heinlein's _Starship Troopers_ was so racist and xenophobic that Joe Haldeman wrote _The Forever War_ as a counterargument. Heinlein is conservative and mostly libertarian, but he is usually better than this. But if you start with a racist and xenophobic book and make a movie out of it with all of the hyping and simplifying that that entails, you are going to end up with an appalling movie.
@jredlund I thought it was appalling in '97, but as of tonight I am revising my opinion. I think it's one of the best satirical commentaries on American culture I've ever seen, especially in regard to militarism. Definitely*not* what Heinlein intended -- but Verhoeven took it and ran with it in a lovely anti-fascism manner. Ymmv! πŸ˜ŠπŸ––
@jredlund Oh, and I can't remember if I've ever read Halslderman, but I'm adding that novel to the To-Read List!
@courtcan Ah, so they made it as a satire. What a good idea! I think I have seen a portion of it, but clearly not enough of it to actually grok it. It just looked like space guys blowing up giant bugs.
@courtcan agree, it’s a great movie
@courtcan Now it's time for the kids to take over!
@courtcan 1997 called.
It wants its sci-fi B-movie back. 🫣
@corbin_lambeth It's so awful. And yet so brilliant. So stupid I can laugh at it. But also, finally (27 years on), see the satire in it.
@courtcan Well, good for you. πŸ˜† I remember trying to watch it with some friends in '98. We gave up. That was the only chance I'm ever going to give it to waste my time. 😀
@corbin_lambeth I always felt that way about it too! But over the last few years, I've read things here and there about how people back then didn't understand that it was supposed to be satire, etc, etc. So I've been curious. Tonight, I concluded in the first 3 minutes that they were right. Way back then, 20yo me just completely missed the point. Ymmv, but I would venture to recommend giving it a shot. If nothing else, it's good for some laughs. 😁

@courtcan Well hmmm πŸ€”

It also seems that we are approximately the same age. πŸ˜†

@corbin_lambeth Likely! I'm 47. πŸ˜ŠπŸ––

@courtcan @corbin_lambeth
Ah.

You're just a kid.

@stargazersmith @courtcan I'm almost certain I will never feel like an adult.
If not at 47... πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ
