The Trump Hack Could Extend Far Beyond a Hack-and-Leak - emptywheel

The question of how to approach this news that Iran hacked Trump's campaign goes well beyond the question of whether to publish the documents allegedly stolen. In significant part because Trump refuses to firewall his political life from his criminal life, hacks by Iran could create real damage to the United States far beyond what they do to Trump's campaign.

@emptywheel If you really wanted to damage Trump you would totally go to *checks notes* POLITICO lol.
@nf3xn @emptywheel George Conway had two psychiatrist on assessing Trump's psychotic and Narcissistic behavior. Conway said he was going to keep poking Trump until he breaks. The shrinks said that was exactly how to break a person with that characteristic.
To be clear, I am not sure this isn't a false flag.
BUT, if it is Iran, Iran has a large psychological warfare unit.
They know the best way is to release something to a 'safe place' so the victim knows what they have and let them stew on it.
Then release it to a perceived enemy. TFG's hate for WaPo is only slightly higher than NYT. WaPo got the next bundle.
Just before the debate, look for a release to NYT, CNN, or MSNBC. Or, a new media arch enemy of the guy with a Tribble on his head.
When that calms down, yet another. Until late October, when they dump the rest, all at once, at the one news source that upset Trump the most.
They will kill him without a shot.
@Ralph058 @emptywheel We should remain very sceptical about whether any of it is true and remember that they are always telling on themselves. I'm not really buying any of it at the moment.
@nf3xn @emptywheel Right.
What they have released hasn't been that damaging.
The Vance dossier is all publicly available. It could have been created for the false flag.
The fun thing is that US hackers like Harris. They might use the false flag as a cover for their operations and release the stuff and let Iran get the blame. After all, they are America's favorite whipping boy.

@emptywheel

Very interesting!

Quoting one paragraph from your article that might pique interest and pull more readers:

“Trump has not firewalled his campaign from a criminal case involving the most sensitive documents of the US government, meaning a well-executed hack targeted his campaign may turn into an intelligence bonanza.”

@emptywheel Didn't the hack and leak happen in that hotel room in Russia? No, my bad, it was just the leak...

@emptywheel

I find it interesting that the first documents leaked were not particularly damaging. Seems like someone issued a warning.

@emptywheel at this point I don’t believe that he was hacked. I think it’s just a ploy to get attention. Remember never trust a grifting bible salesman
@bhaugland @emptywheel Agreed. Especially the idea "OH WE WERE HACKED and they didn't find anything, we're GOOD!!!
@emptywheel “I’ve been hacked” sounds way too convenient…
@emptywheel Didn’t Politico live tweet the podesta / DNC leaks in the run up to the 2016 election? Will they do the same now with the GOP leak??

@emptywheel

Excellent, informative and authoritative article on this! Thanks!

@emptywheel

So when are we going to get to see these emails? #karma #HillaryClinton #ButHerEmails

@emptywheel I find it interesting that the 'proof of hack' document is so anodyne.
Other documents are hinted but not produced.
That strikes me as a bluff. Which makes me think that Chet with the AOL account is just as likely some dude who got the doc as result of a too-wide distro, & who (like any good Trumpist) wants to set the ballroom curtains on fire before the Titanic goes down.

@emptywheel How much longer before the DoJ's policy of "no overt actions during a campaign" starts? This "Trump hack" could be really ... interesting.

And please tell me the DNC, DSCC, DCCC and DLCC have world-class infosec teams and training.

@emptywheel It's 2024 - how do any of these cretins have a compromised email account? As far as I'm concerned, they deserve to get hacked if their opsec is this terrible.

@emptywheel
trump, a felonious traitor, with MORE charges pending!
THIS man cannot take the "Oath of Office!"

Cheung is a habitual liar, so we can’t trust anything he says,
the Trump campaign has muddled various functions, criminal and civil defense with campaign finance and, now, candidate vetting. It creates a legal morass, one that — if Trump loses this election — could lead to more legal trouble down the road.

Maybe that’s why Trump didn’t call the FBI.

@emptywheel I looked this morning for a source that has evidence Iran was behind the hack (and that the hack actually occurred, one report said the website was hacked, but you don’t get email from the website). All I could find was that Trump claimed Microsoft told him they were hacked. Trump also said he rode in a helicopter with Willie Brown and it almost crashed. Is there any other source?
@emptywheel
"Trump has not firewalled his campaign from a criminal case involving the most sensitive documents of the US government, meaning a well-executed hack targeted at his campaign may turn into an intelligence bonanza".
@emptywheel
What goes around, comes around.

@emptywheel

Worth a read. As usual, Marcy is paying attention and connecting dots.

However, I think there could be another actor in play that is not Iran.
