Have a question about Threads and the fediverse? We’re inviting a couple of experts in to help demystify things 👀 Reply with your questions — we’ll brb.
Okay, we’re here with @mmccue of @flipboard and @exhaustedfemalefounder of @blockpartyapp_ 🫶 Welcome! In simple terms, what is the fediverse? Why explore it?
The fediverse is an open social network formed by people using compatible apps like Threads, Flipboard, Mastodon and others. People can follow and communicate with each other across these apps giving you the power to discover and follow more people and posts beyond what any one app provides on its own.
A lot of people recently have been confusing the Fediverse with the reason their posts are showing up on other Meta platforms, like Facebook and Instagram. What can the @threads team do to better explain the difference to their users?
the fediverse refers to a "universe" of social networking services that can all communicate with each other over a standard protocol.

sort of like how email is an open protocol and you can sign up with an email provider of your choice (e.g. gmail, protonmail) and send email to anyone else, instead of everyone being stuck within a single provider and unable to communicate with people on a different provider. now for social networking, too! eg, someone on mastodon can see posts from @threads
Threads and @flipboard are both part of the same decentralized network. Can you explain what that means, Mike?
Sure! If you enable “Fediverse Sharing” in your account settings here on Threads, people using Flipboard or other fediverse apps like Mastodon can then discover and reply to your posts. This lets you get discovered by a whole new audience of people who might want to follow you. It's sort of like email: people can communicate with each other regardless of the app or service they use.
@mmccue @evanprodromou Are threads users notified about this setting in any way? I’m thinking the average threads user doesn’t know much about the fedaverse, so they wouldn't even think about looking for a setting like that.
So the fediverse is a decentralized network of social media servers that can communicate with one another. We know about Mastodon, Threads and @flipboard — what other servers are there?
I need the version where you’re talking to someone who isn’t a programmer. Please
You know how you have to sign up for every new app to follow people on that app? And how it's a hassle?

The fediverse lets people talk *across apps*. So when a magazine publisher makes a new post on Flipboard, you'll see that post on Threads.*

It's like a best-of crossover episode of your favourite TV shows.
Yes there is a growing array of new apps and services that are joining the fediverse. WordPress and Ghost are enabling bloggers to post directly to the fediverse so that people can more easily discuss blog posts. Pixelfed is great for photo sharing and PeerTube is great for video sharing and TrueFans is great for podcast discovery.
All Wordpress sites, that use the official ActivtyPub plugin, immediately become full fledged fediverse servers and their blog posts and blog authors become fedivese enabled. They rolled this out to all VIP users who want it and to anyone to download the plugin for their sites, also ghost is actively building this into their platform where all Ghost powered sites and newsletters become full fediverse accounts. https://fedidb.org/software/wordpress

Why is @flipboard integrating with the fediverse? And more generally, why do you think it’s important, @mmccue?
Flipboard is integrating with the fediverse so that our users can discover, follow and reply to all the people posting on Threads, Mastodon, WordPress, Ghost and more. We're also excited about giving our magazine curators the ability to reach more users than they can on just Flipboard. And of course we're excited for people in the fediverse to discover Flipboard for the first time!
@mmccue
@heidilifeldman
While I had seen @Flipboard before coming to Mastodon, I have perused / subscribed to far more Flipboard content since they started tooting on Mastodon.
@exhaustedfemalefounder, how should content moderation work in the fediverse?
1) When is Kevin Federline releasing a follow up to his 2006 smash hit “Popozao”?
2)Are people who don’t know Federline and Popozao even allowed in the fediverse?
@threads When will be available for everyone?
@exaustedfemalefounder - will there ever be a "BlockParty for the Fediverse? " Or a Block Party for Threads?
we'd love to build @blockpartyapp_ for fediverse and threads someday! our criteria are 1) consumer demand and 2) technical feasibility. factoring into 1) demand are number of users, the prevalence and intensity of problems that people are dealing with, and inadequacy of other available solutions. on 2) technical feasibility, mainly this is about having API access
we're keeping an eye on the @threads API -- so far it's limited to mostly publisher functionality and doesn't have the capabilities around safety that we need (e.g. block, mute, report), nor the ability to pull enough supplementary info to be smart about those actions (e.g. following/follower relationships, basic user data like signup date), but looking forward to the continued rollout of API functionality!
Very glad to hear and that seems wise way to look at it. At least for Mastodon, I'd think the API would get you what you need today, but hovering at 1 MM or so active users and 12 MM registered users, I could see wanting to wait till that was more like 2X or so bigger. But I would say, the demand is there. We can block servers and users there - but no good solution for sharing known sets of bad actor accounts.

One of my favorite video explainers: https://digiday.com/marketing/wtf-is-the-fediverse/
WTF is the fediverse?

With an increasingly fragmented social media landscape, Twitter’s decline, data privacy concerns and a huge creator economy, the promise of cross-platform communication has sparked curiosity.

The fediverse is a global, open, decentralized network of social media servers all around the world that can communicate with each other using a standard protocol. 1/2
When you turn it on, ppl on other apps can see your threads posts & follow you

& eventually, vice versa
When will be able to reply to Fediverse users commenting on our Threads?
What more do you think we can do to encourage people to turn on fediverse sharing in Threads (and other opt-in platforms) to create a better connected social web?
Similar, is there a better way to have people opt in? Opt in rates are very low on threads. @mmccue
Today: I think it's important to evangelize to people that turning on fediverse sharing is a best practice for anyone interested in growing their audience.

Soon: As fediverse integration continues to advance and becomes more seamless, it will become a no brainer for everyone to enable it in order to participate in the broader network and discover more cool people and content.
what where when why… the fediverse?
For @threads teams - to boost visibility of fediverse sharing, would you consider ways to search for Federated accounts specifically? Or adding "Joined the Fediverse" to the feed once someone turns that on? Or once it was out of beta, encourage new users to have this setting on in sign up?
Taking notes 📝
These are some really solid ideas!
Does engagement on your Threads posts by Fediverse users, increase the ranking of those posts or of your account inside the Threads algorithm that powers the "For You" feed or search results?
i have a question, can you read this on threads?
@mkljczk @threads
I don't think they can
They've made it strictly one-way.
We can hear them, but they can't hear us.
Meta hasn’t got the best reputation within the existing Fediverse platforms. What do you think the @threads team need to do to gain the trust of other federated platforms?
Are we at a point yet where influencers on Threads have good tips on using the Fediverse? What's been working, what doesn't?
Great question! I never contemplated that the influencers working with Threads might be given guidance on the Fediverse.
I think we're approaching that point. More and more thoughtful creators like @davidimel and @mkbhd have federated their accounts so I would not be surprised to hear creators start talking about their experience and providing tips soon.
We’ll have a special Waveform episode coming out about the Fediverse soon :)
can't wait! only you guys cab explain this in a way that makes sense and that isn't boring, because let's be real this isn't a boring technology by any stretch!
Looking forward to that!
Can't wait! Release date? 🤩
Is tomorrow the day??
Tuesday after next 😅 Special episode, not a normal one!
I have a question about monetization…mine has not been updated in almost three weeks?? Will it be updated by the deadline of the 9th??🤔
I was surprised to see Automattic release a Threads API plugin for WordPress, since they're one of the big implementers on the Fediverse. Does Flipboard do something similar?

When should third-party developers use Fediverse protocols to share with Threads audiences, and when should they use the Threads API?
So far we're only using ActivityPub to communicate with Threads but I can see how using the API could help augment things. For example, determining if a given account is verified would require using the API.
Hmm. Thanks for the idea! 💡
@[email protected] I want to know when two way federation will be enabled so my friends can follow me back on your platform pls!
