@stargazer @canadaduane The note in German points out that the .de site of vlc is actually owned by an adware and spyware nogoodnik, and to stay away. Use videolan.org for vlc!

@stargazer @canadaduane Wegen sowas zwangsmigriere ich Leute auf #Linux: Denn da kriegen die #TechIlliterates weder Admin- bzw sudo - Rechte & können daher auch keine solchen Fuckups abbekommen!

Insbesondere da #Malvertising dafür sorgt dass #Windows unfixbar unsicher in jeder Konfiguration ist!

Attached: 1 image I got my partner - who is non-technical - a Windows laptop for Christmas in 2023. A fancy one with Windows 11, TPM blah blah. Clean install. It has Defender, Smart App Control enabled etc so I wasn’t concerned about the security. Anyhoo, just looked at 7 months later and Defender is disabled, a ‘free’ AV called RAV is registered which appears to be a fake Chinese AV, Smart App Control is disabled, her traffic is routed to a Chinese VPN, her browser is Opera GX (a Chinese owned one).

Man braucht keine Sudo oder Root Rechte um unter Linux Programme im Kontext des jeweiligen Benutzer zu installieren.
Appimages und Flatpacks machen das sogar noch viel einfacher.

@DarkMetatron ja, aber ich nehme den Nutzern generell das recht etwas als ausführbar zu chmod-den (#AppImage) bzw. habe auch kein #flatpak am lauften bzw. auch das restriktiv...

Aber das ist auch nur weil ich nicht will dass Leute was deliberate verstellen sondern weil ich für's fixen der Fuckups nicht [gut genug] bezahlt werde...

Ja ok, wenn man die Möglichkeit hat das so zu konfigurieren ist natürlich super.

@DarkMetatron geht mit #UNIX-Gruppenzuordnungen unter #Linux.

Dazu Zugriffsrechte auf bspw. chmod nur nutzern der entsprechenden Gruppe gewähren und die User einfach nicht in jene Gruppe zulassen.

chmod +x geht nur wenn mensch chmod aufrufen kann!

Sehr simpel...

Und mit tools wie #Landscape sogar in einfach.

#Funfact: Sony's #PS3 setzt dies zusammen mit Signaturzwanh um, um Havks und Mods zu verhindern...

Ich weiß wie es geht, ich meine eher das man oft aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht die Möglichkeit hat das so zu konfigurieren.
Wobei es vermutlich effektiver wäre einfach das Home Directory für den Nutzer noexec zu mounten.
Eine Datei ausführbar zu machen geht auch durchaus ohne das chmod binary.

Kommt natürlich immer auf das Setup an und die jeweilingen Nutzer*innen:

Ich bin da im zweifelsfalle halt etwas härter aber auch nur weil ich kein Bock habe alle 2 Wochen Zeug neu zu installieren und weil ich mit regulierten Branchen zu tun habe wo im Zweifelsfalle jeder Tastenanschlag auf kritischen Systemen geloggt wird.

Ansonsten reicht meist kein sudo- Rechte geben und schlimmstenfalls zerlegen User*innen nur ihr $HOME-Verzeichnis, was mit nem einfachen Backroll von nem Backup fixbar ist...

Ja aus genau diesen Gründen installiere ich bei weniger Technik affinen Menschen auch sehr gerne Atomic Distributionen mit read only Systempartitionen.
So wenig wie möglich Angriffsfläche (sowohl für wirkliche Angreifer als auch für Fehlbedienung durch den Nutzer) eröffnen.

Im Zweifelsfalle #readonly - Internet-Terminals mit @tails / #Tails oder #PorteusKiosk die die #ISO per #iPXE netbooten und so konfiguriert sind dass nur dass erlaubt ist.

Sowas in der Art hat die Bahn für ihre PCs in den Reisezentren inzwischen laufen, kleine Mini-PCs die per Netboot ein read only Linux booten und alle benötigten Programme laufen im Webbrowser.
Find ich wirklich gut.

Guter Bekannter arbeitet dort und #ThinClients mit #WebApps sind massiv deren Angriffsfläche reduzierend.

@DarkMetatron Habe selbst sowas deployed - früher #OpenThinclient aber heute würde ich #PorteusKiosk stattdessen deployen...

@canadaduane Excellent. This is what we need more of. Most of the fortunes made on the Internet have been made at the expense of the commons. This developer is not willing to piss in the pool he swims in. Ad based business models are exactly that.
