COVID denialism and misinformation has led to Olympic athletes not even washing their hands because they wrongly think it will help them become more resistant against disease.

There is no evidence handwashing weakens your immune system. There is no evidence that adopting unsanitary practices makes your immune system stronger. But there is a lot of evidence that handwashing and other precautions protects you and others from infectious diseases, especially in risky environments like bathrooms.

@luckytran they still hope to do shortly ...😬😬😬
@luckytran imagine being so proud of not washing your hands before preparing food...
@Lazarou @luckytran well.. at the end he will be the one growing worms in his guts. Hope he enjoys..
@luckytran It's a USAnian saying it. Is this guy from Floriduh, by any chance?

@luckytran not uh...that can't be real.
*One search later*
No, no no no

🤢

@luckytran Some people’s life goals are to live and die like a medieval peasant.
@KanaMauna @luckytran Only that medieval peasants did wash themselves as good as they could. Keeping yourself dirty on purpose is another level of yikes.
@luckytran Nobody has ever accused the IOC of being The Mensa Games!

@luckytran wait this is a real quote!!??? Not like an @onion piece??!!! 😳

@SRDas @luckytran @onion Yes, first thought was this is from the onion. Sheesh
@luckytran Wtf? The world has lost its mind. I feel like COVID came with a huge amount of disinformation about diseases in general ...

@Radgryd @luckytran
COVID created an ideal environment for the "immune systems are magic" woo bullshit to spread like... something virulently contagious, an apt analogy escapes me...

I'm sure it's a total coincidence that the virtually unregulated, enormously profitable supplement industry likes to push "immune system boosting" remedies because it's a nonsense claim that doesn't have to be backed up by any results whatsoever.

@luckytran
OMG, I thought this was a joke but no such luck! Yuck!

Sports Illustrated got the headline right.

Edited to add the link:

U.S. Triathlete Seth Rider Shared Gross Tactic for Dealing With E. Coli at Olympics

This was quite the unconventional—and unhygienic—strategy.

@luckytran why is he bragging about literally eating shit? I'm sorry sir are you a fucking dung beetle?
@luckytran well, he's not a mathlete...
@luckytran May no one have to share a room at the Olympic dorms with this person.

@luckytran

Maybe this might persuade them to re-think?

Indian vultures: Decline of scavenger birds caused 500,000 human deaths

A new study links the vulture decline in India to deadly bacteria spread, causing about 500,000 deaths.

@luckytran ladies, he’s single! And he doesn’t wash his hands after taking a shit - score!
@luckytran Well he will learn that they don’t hand out gold medals for diarrhea.
@luckytran Oh. My. God. This is true. And even worse, @nytimes calls it "apparently, science- backed". Nohoooo! https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5662589/2024/07/27/seine-river-contamination-e-coli-hand-washing-triathlete/
How one U.S. Olympian is prepping for Seine’s E. coli problem: Not washing his hands

"I just try to increase my E. coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E. coli in your day-to-day life," he said.

@luckytran lmao this is like that Hollywood trend from a year ago or something where like all these white people were boasting about showering very rarely for some reason 🤣💀
@luckytran This guy should be known as No Shake Seth

@luckytran Some brave soul just added that to his Wikipedia page too:

@luckytran I've started to recommend to people who bring up immunity debt that they gargle with citric acid and vinegar daily to train their teeth.
@luckytran can those people please wear a badge or something? So I know who I wouldn't want to shake hands with? Good grief. Well, plain old evolution will take care of the rest I think. Hopefully, they wont take that many down with them.
@Pterry They should wear a little biohazard badge.
@luckytran
I've been slowly building a resistance to lead and mercury and it's blen gonibgh awdggetsoggvneme.
@luckytran Ew! This path leads to brain worms.

@luckytran I would really rather flame him for not understanding properly, that any E Coli in the water is an indication for feces and everything that comes with it.

Trying to get more used to a E Coli family living inside humans is of course another insanity. 🤣

@luckytran That is disgusting!
Also, stupid, homeopathic, woo woo bullshit.
We really need to emphasize bacterial and disease spread in schools, clearly.

@samhainnight @luckytran I dunno. We've only had germ theory for oh...approximately 200 years. But I'm sure that little twat knows better.

#sarcasm

@luckytran you gotta be kidding… please…
@luckytran The Olympics are no IQ test, aren't they?
So why are we surprised?
@luckytran He's us-american, has he even ever seen a school from the inside, much less any actual news? there's enough people there who believe in "god" but don't accept science, are home-schooled to never know anything but "god's words" (=white men's doctrines) and don't hear any actual news ever. they won't understand what misinformation means, ever, they don't have any critical thinking skills.
@luckytran "i just eat a little poop once a day, no big deal."

@luckytran he's an Athlete if He wins something people will adopt it and He probably never stops because it was Part of his winning process.

Yes yes, causation, correlation and so but in my experience athletes are super esoterics and the more long distance the worse.
That will be so cool when they all stop washing hands and then someone brings their Kid's noro Virus to the contest. 😭

@luckytran

I intend to write to the BBC to complain about this content. Claims like those of this triathlete should not be given the credence of repetition. There are enough lunatics in this world (anti-vaccers or whatever they call themselves and other conspiracy theorists) without the BBC promulgating bullsh*t. This is not what I pay my licence fee to receive! (We pay for a 'television licence' in the UK. It's crazy. Don't ask...)

@luckytran Gross! Let's normalize calling people who don't wash their hands "WEIRD"!

@luckytran

This may be a case of crossed signals. There is evidence that *children* who are exposed to the outdoors, mud, farm animals, etc. benefit immunologically with less illness and fewer allergies as they grow up. My info is about 5 years old, but I haven’t seen any changes.

Similar but negative effects from overuse of strong anti-microbials when simple soaps do just fine.

@luckytran

I also thought this was very odd. Only precaution for swimming in fecal water is to not get any in your eyes, nose, or mouth! 🤿

@luckytran
When all of your brain power goes into being a triathlete, and there's nothing left for common sense.

wow

@luckytran our best but not our brightest

So hard to believe! COMMON sense!
