I have exactly one movie queued up this friday afternoon, and then I have officially run out of movies that I downloaded that one time with a vague commitment to watching them at some point. This makes for a short list this week, and a longer one next week, by virtue of repeating the process with a brand new iteration of "that one time". As one does
And so, one last time: when I get back from getting a pizza, should I watch
Just to have it written down,
and on the off chance it comes in handy on a rainy day where inspiration seems to be a foreign notion,
and/or to feed a future _ebook someone might build off of this account,
Escape from New York (1981)
Constantine (2005)
October sky (1999)
Blade Runner (1982/2007)
How to steal a million (1966)
No country for old men (2007)
Smilla's sense of snow (1997)
Kimi (2022)
Emily the criminal (2022)
Beneath the harvest sky (2013)
White noise (2022)
And thus our months-long experiment in cinematic democratized randomization enters into a second phase, with a new batch of movies I downloaded that one time. Which is all to say:
I have four movies queued up this friday afternoon. When I come back in an hour after getting a pizza, should I watch
and the winner is
after being available exactly once as an option,
the rocky horror picture show
'tis time to close this gap in my general education
and the winner is
oontz oontz oontz oontz
24 hour party people
"what even are ghost votes?"
run a long-form recurring thread long enough, and it garners attention from beyond
also
holy smokes, it's Spike Spiegel
the movie was apparently filmed in 3D (in 1953!), and you can definitely see the moments when they decided to showcase that effect
also, the movie correctly posits that you can not make deals with unreconstructed southerners. a life lesson to take to heart
and the winner is
with the highest percentage rate yet, a horrific 86%
Elvira: mistress of the dark
.........awooooo
It occurs to me that I have done this long enough to warrant a hashtag. Thus, I encourage you to vote on this week's #FridayMovie
Which is to say
I have three movies queued up this friday afternoon. When I come back in an hour after getting a pizza, should I watch
"mastodon user sargoth, why are there sometimes three options instead of four?"
when a new option is added and immediately wins, the three remaining ones get to duke it out the next week
to encourage circulation, you see
It is friday, and you know what that means
that's right
the weekly #FridayMovie poll!
After I press post, I go outside to get a pizza. When I get back with said pizza, should I watch
To avoid any confusion: the fourth option is the 1995 version
character limits, y'know
and the winner is
with a record 100% of the votes
The incredibly true adventure of two girls in love (1995)
and the winner is
after many a week's stoic silence
Modesty Blaise!
should you go out of your way to watch this movie?
no
should you add it to a list of movies you will eventually, at some point, randomly see?
I mean, sure, why not
I just realized the second round now has gone on as long as the first one did, and so it might be prudent to make a list of previous movies. Just to have 'em posted
Lost in translation (2003)
Good bye Lenin (2003)
How to marry a millionaire (1953)
The rocky horror picture show (1975)
24 hour party people (2002)
The long goodbye (1973)
Gun fury (1953)
Elvira: mistress of the dark (1988)
The long kiss goodnight (1996)
The incredibly true adventure of two girls in love (1995)
Modesty Blaise (1966)
and the winner is
by virtue of seniority
How to make an american quilt
fun bonus info: the average release date of all these movies (quilt included) is the first of july 1983
I was asked about the seemingly random and nonsensical selection of movies, so here's a recap
For the first round, it consisted of movies that I had downloaded at some point in time and then never bothered to watch. The weekly poll was a neat vehicle to get around to watching 'em
Then I ran out of movies, and so I downloaded a brand new set, seeking out more and/or less famous movies I'd vaguely like to get around to seeing one day. And so, the weekly polls continued into their second round
The four selection criteria are
1. that I have not seen it before
2. that it is not accidentally porn or propaganda or somesuch
3. that it'd make for a nice friday evening watch (to suit the pizza, see), and
4. that it'd fill in a gap in my general awareness of movie history
given time, this will turn me into a well rounded individual who Gets References, and in the short term it is a nice little moment to look forward to each week
I'm building my own ancient tradition slash educational praxis
I have movies queued up until early 2025, which sounds impressive until you remember that, at the rate of one movie per week, that's slightly over 25 titles
fortunately, fridays are a renewable resource, so there is no rush. it is rumored that there are a finite number of movies, but I think we don't have to worry about that for a while
if you want to join in the voting, it mostly happens fridays around 16:00 (4 pm) Europe time, give or take
most weeks are decided by a one (1) vote margin. I suspect you know who you are
Friends, we are doing something new this tuesday. We are kicking off the #FridayMovie poll early, to give democracy a chance to play itself out. And so, I present to you, four movies, the winner of which I will watch after getting home from a long day in three days
I urge you to choose wisely. Democracy itself (or at least the parts of it that we inhabit) depends on it!
and the winner is
Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
which is a title even longer than the entry from a few weeks back
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love
I suspect these two movies might not have much in common, above and beyond their title lengths. I am ready to be proven wrong, tho
@batterpunts only if we define lesbianism as a doomsday weapon
*remembers the times we are in*
you make a good point. they are basically the same movie
and the winner is
with no votes, by feat of seniority
River of no return
old timey marilyn monroe western, here we go
and the winner is
through seniority, with a tied vote
The day the earth stood still
My fellow #FridayMovie enthusiasts, this is your captain speaking. I am happy to announce that round 2 is rapidly (as these things go) coming to a close. This, in conjunction with me having a slow saturday eve, has prompted me to speed things up a notch by watching OtherLife (2017)
Voting and participatory democracy will return next week
