It took five years to write, but here's the full story behind Lambda School, Silicon Valley's disastrous foray into for-profit education.

I explain how they burned through $120 million in funding, why Income Share Agreements failed, the crimes committed along the way, and how one developer turned journalist put an end to the fraud.

Fast Crimes at Lambda School

Two days after his company's downfall, Austen Allred wrote: I wish people could see how ugly it is to be envious, and how obvious it is to those around you when that's what's happening. There's not much uglier than trying to tear someone down because they achieved what you wish

@sandofsky that was a breathtaking read, thank you for putting time and effort into this. It took me 2 hours to read and digest.

I’ve followed lambda’s story on twitter between 2018-2020 and hype around it, especially paulg’s takes, were revolting. I didn’t know what happened to lambda so learning their fate brought me some kind of joy, partly due to being proven right, partly knowing that it was a scam all along (i loved my college, still dearly missing my college days). Fair to say i was one of Allred’s “haters”

If you’d consider, Mighty is another startup that paulg kept tweeting about around the same time, but it didn’t involve scamming people, it was just stupid. It would make a fine story perhaps

Reading about how education requires 1:1 attention made me think “oh my god, someone is going to try lambda school with ChatGPT soon, aren’t they?”. Perhaps they’re waiting to see how Devin will fare (when/if it launches)

@sandofsky Thanks for this comprehensive history.

I felt so disgusted when I read they were selling loans. That creates such perverse incentives, and I think they knew that.

@sandofsky 👏 bravo. I had barely paid attention to any of this previously. These people need to be called out for what they are. Thanks for writing it and sharing it.
@sandofsky Now THIS is the kind of content I love. Amazing work and thank you for writing it!!!!

@sandofsky Allred and many of his investors probably read The Unincorporated man

nothing new under the sun

@sandofsky an astounding read, thank you

@sandofsky Paid the full price, went through the whole course, don’t regret it. Never became a full-time software engineer but still use stuff that I’ve learned 5-6 years later.

Never really understood why you’ve wasted so much time on this pursuit when you have so many other (incredible) things to focus on.

@cpdis @sandofsky So your one anecdote is supposed to nullify the content? Your «why you’ve wasted» spiel sounds like the kind of manipulative rhetorical insincerity that makes you sound like a shill for the «company».
@sandofsky I’m sick on the couch. This piece kept my mind off that for at least an hour. It’s infuriating what happened, but thanks for writing it up and keeping me engaged all the way through. Great work!
@sandofsky beautiful piece, thanks for this work.
@sandofsky This was a fantastic article.

This story about the meteoric rise and dramatic fall of Lambda, the for-profit school of Silican Valley reads like a thriller.

From an illustrious founder, deceipt, $100 million + of funding and burning, real villains, criminality and an unexpecting outing, it is all there.

One quote: "It sucks so bad that they are getting away with this, especially when the students are mostly minority or in vulnerable positions."

Reality beats fiction once again.

@sandofsky Good article, but I wish the images (especially the screenshots of text) had alt text.
@sandofsky this is an excellent piece
@sandofsky Nice piece! Quotes I liked, "Austen role-played as Musk, but lacked the power to get away with his antics." and "For an ISA to work, a school needs the self-awareness to accept they have a problem. Instead, Austen blamed employers for refusing to give his students a chance. Instead of fixing the training, he tried to disrupt his way out of the problem..."
@sandofsky Thank you. Well done article.
@sandofsky fascinating (and horrifying), thank you for writing this!
@sandofsky incredible read, thanks for gathering it all in one place. I’m thinking again of the people who spoke up against him and were targeted by VCs who attacked their careers and livelihoods.
