Central Cascades

I was trying to find a location with less rain showers this weekend and somehow ended up camping in the mountains. 🤔 Today was so fun and I want to remember that when the snow showers start in the morning. The mountain views have been stunning. Seeing how close I can get to Mount Washington tomorrow. Maybe the weather will be totally fine but I’m prepared to bail if I’m not able to stay warm.

Central Cascades: Part 2

Camped at the 2000 mile mark on the PCT. Mosquitoes were already bad but nice campsite at a pond. I should probably learn the lesson that the weather in the mountains is always going to be more extreme than expected. By Saturday morning I was already in survival mode so these photos are from Friday. (more)

I hiked for several hours in snow storms and cold temps until I couldn’t keep my hands warm anymore. Retreated to my tent to get dry and warm up. I want to be clear that I had the gear to survive the situation but the reality was it was going to be a less than comfortable night then packing up an icy tent in the morning at freezing temps. I bailed when the first meaningful break in the weather happened in late afternoon. Great decision.

@andrewbriscoe

Hard to believe it was snowing somewhere in the US with the temps so high in so many places.

Going to be 90's this week in the NYC area. I heard it might go over a 100F in Maine. The SW and Florida were cooked recently.

@HikerGeek Wow, I didn’t know it was so hot elsewhere, except where my parents live in Arizona. 100 in Maine seems extreme. It’s going to be in the 90s on Friday here in the Portland area and in the 80s up close to Mount Hood where I’m thinking about going. The rain should completely stop here soon for months.

@andrewbriscoe

I just checked and they reduced the Maine temp forecast. Just high 90's now for some parts.

@andrewbriscoe Excellent advice Andrew especially in the spring and fall! In quotes “I should probably learn the lesson that the weather in the mountains is always going to be more extreme than expected.” Hope you had a great trip anyway!
@Inthewilderness It was good, no regrets! It’s so much easier to just stay home if the weather is going to start bad than with nice weather followed by a change.
@andrewbriscoe Actually, Andrew some of my most memorable camping experiences have been in crazy inclement weather. That’s Northwest living!
@Inthewilderness It was memorable! 🤣 I didn’t know it when I started packing up but water was already seeping into my tent from under my sleeping pads.
@andrewbriscoe That’s no fun! Been there a time or two!
@andrewbriscoe
No kidding! I drove down the Icefields Parkway (Banff-Jasper) yesterday and it was living up to its name. A lot of cyclists looked very cold and wet in their gear.
@EllenInEdmonton That sounds so beautiful though! The name sounds intimidating.
@andrewbriscoe
Yesterday would have been a not-so-fun day to hike or bike in the area!
@EllenInEdmonton Fair looks chilly! Very pretty though.
@andrewbriscoe nice cone
@PizzaDemon Thanks! I’m surprised my map didn’t have a name for such a prominent feature.
@andrewbriscoe ❤️ Love your tours! That unknown mountain very much looks like Black Butte to me (also would be in the vicinity). Very nice climb & amazing views in all directions from up there (plus fire tower)! Stayed for several hours... I went in May 2019 as a fallback when the area around the Three Fingered Jack still had too much snow for my liking (on the way back from Smith Rock)...
@toxi Thank you! Could be, I’ve never been to Black Butte. I need to check that out. It was unnamed on my AllTrails map. Looked to be just northwest of Suttle Lake on the other side of highway 20.
@andrewbriscoe wow, looks amazing, don't think I've seen a pic of Mount Washington before, didn't realise it was so "pointy" (technical term). I've seen Mount Shasta from a distance, and loads of pics of Mount St Helens (before and after 1980), so assumed Mount Washington would be similar, quite wide. 🙄
@Outinthehills Thanks! I only realized that recently from photos here. This was my first time in this area. As I got closer to Washington the snow got deep so I want to go back and see it close up later this year. I tried to get the canonical photo from Big Lake but it was gray clouds.
@andrewbriscoe What a gorgeous place to explore! Good luck with the snow showers!
@TimKStanton I really enjoyed it. Snow started very early Saturday so I’ll have to go back.
@andrewbriscoe Love these! And extra credit for the image descriptions!
@andrewbriscoe nice, sunrise at the lake looks gorgeous
@jds Thanks! Made it to the lake at the right moment. 🤞🏼Needed water too.
Yep, one of my favorite mountains to shoot at when I’m in the area. Good views from highway 20, and had some sweet shots from Black Butte Ranch
@BlurryBits I still need to check out the ranch. I’m feeling drawn to Washington as well. Seems elusive and unforgiving. It was quite amazing to be socked in full clouds and then have all these mountains just appear out of nowhere.
@andrewbriscoe We have a Mt Washington on Vancouver Island too 🏔
@PhoenixSerenity I hear the hiking on the island is wild and amazing. And not too far away.
@andrewbriscoe Come over on ferry!
@PhoenixSerenity Would love to. It’s actually the only place I’ve been to in Canada so far. Went to the Butchart Gardens with friends when I was younger and hung out in Victoria.

@andrewbriscoe I will show you much wilder places!

You can camp in our backyard or stay in spare room to save money. If you eat seafood, we can put traps in before adventures ✌️

@PhoenixSerenity Haha I didn’t plan that trip to be fair. Sounds fun, I like seafood! What are some cool places there that can be seen over a weekend?
@andrewbriscoe East Sooke, Jordan River, Goldstream & Highland mountains!
Amazing portfolio, Andrew. Thanks for sharing with us!
