could it be???? 🤩

iOS 18 adds a "keep downloaded" option for iCloud folders — should help #Obsidian load much faster.

@kepano Don’t make me hope for this feature in macOS.
@pcalves it already exists on macOS but less granular, you can turn off "Optimize Mac Storage"
@kepano I really need that granularity, storing old music projects takes up a lot of "useless" local space. Though I get it's not as much of a concern on Desktop and I'm probably better off getting a NAS or something.
@kepano Hoping this also exists on macOS
@anthonyvardiz it already exists on macOS but less granular, you can turn off "Optimize Mac Storage"
@kepano Yeah I’m aware of this setting, but it’s not consistent
@kepano I’ve been wishing this for so long 😭
@kepano Stuck on ios 15.4.1 for the foreseeable future, but I've implemented alternate syncing so all good for now.
@kepano do you see this feature being helpful for iCloud sync working better generally? I forget all the issues that come up and if that was one of the major reasons, but obsidian sync was such a stark improvement when I switched and I remember something about their iOS /iPadOS rules being a cause for some of it.
@justinpocta yes, it should be a big improvement for any app that relies on local files
@kepano iCloud constantly unloading files is what made me abandon it for sync. I'm so excited for this. This is like the best feature this year and no one's talking about it.
@kepano any idea why they delete files in the first place? No one asked for it
@tenth I guess it's to make space on your device, but I agree it's a bad default
@kepano @tenth it’s permanently deleted stuff from my devices a few times, I’m pretty sure. Like gifs will just go missing or I’ll have day logs and one day will just vanish after I don’t check for a while
@kepano @tenth It’s a necessary default, because most people don’t understand the concept of file storage or have any idea where they are stored if they do. Their device eventually fills up and then they’re wondering why they’re ”out of memory”. These people include both my mom and teenage kid, which worries me.
@harri @kepano @tenth It's almost as if fostering an environment that intentionally tries to keep its users in the dark and reliant on their services would cause then to become ignorant of managing their own devices. This is what Apple wants.
@kepano Is this just for users who use iCloud to sync Obsidian, or would Obsidian Sync users also see faster loading times?
@lynndotpy this toggle is only for iCloud but it's already how Obsidian Sync works —and we're also making even more performance improvements
@kepano I want the opposite of this. I never want it downloaded.
File over app

If you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Use tools that give you...

@kepano by using iCloud, does this mean we can stop using Obsidian Sync?
@nicosomb both options will remain available and each have their tradeoffs — I don't expect it to change the proportion of Sync vs iCloud users much
@kepano I thought that sync with iCloud was buggy.
@nicosomb @kepano You have to force download on macOS sometimes but besides that it works perfectly.
I particularly like how the application wait to read all files before starting. I should prevent a lot of desynchronising.
