iOS 18 supports dual language keyboards. So no more need to have multiple keyboards active, making it easier to switch between keyboard and emoji picker 🎉
I reported this as a feature request, great that it got added!
CC @viticci @_inside I don‘t know how to edit it, but did iOS create a dual language keyboard with your topmost languages for you as well?
@nmann Same here!

@cdf1982 @viticci I experienced the same and had do click on the download icon near the language in the keyboard setting. It „downloaded“ for 2secs and now it seems to work as expected
@nmann @viticci How do you activate it?
@gklka I had both German and English set as languages in settings. Also a dedicated German and English keyboard. After updating to iOS 18 it automatically combined these two languages into a dual language keyboard. I don’t know how to change it
@nmann Aha… probably doesn’t work with every combination :( Hungarian is always neglected.

@nmann FUCK YEAH!

So I can finally build an ANSI-layout EN/DE keyboard with this on iPad?

@SherlockHans I don’t know what the rules are what can be combined and how

@nmann @viticci is it limited to 2 languages? I‘d need 3ish for daily use.

Also, which language does the keyboard report to the active app? Ivory for example will preselect the keyboard’s language as the post language, what does it select when using a multi-language keyboard?

@thegcat yes seems to be the case sadly. Settings says I can add up to two languages to the keyboard (I don’t know if I can even edit them at the moment)
@nmann @thegcat you can! delete them and add them back together and it’ll ask you to combine them.
@thegcat regarding the languages. That’s super weird. If I create a new post, it shows DE (German), but now that I answer to yours, it shows EN. Could be due to your name being prefilled. I’d expect the first of the two languages as default

@nmann Except it doesn't seem to work. 😅

I have Dutch + English, but it doesn't automatically switch.

@nmann does it still waste space below the keyboard, if you have only one keyboard active and dictation disabled?
@sn0opy yes, I think it’s more ergonomic this way though
@nmann Oh this is probably the best news of the day 🙌
@nmann Oohh, this looks great, I’m tired of always having my keyboard in the language that I’m *not* trying to type in at the moment.
@nmann No love for Croatian…
@nmann @viticci wait I was able to use French and English at the same time for a while, what am I missing ?
@Bluewall Before iOS 18 to be able to use both languages auto corrects, you need to have both language keyboards. You don’t need to switch but they clutter the language menu on the bottom left of the keyboard. In case of 2 languages + Emoji, the Emoji icon gets replaced by a globe icon. In iOS 18 you can combine two languages into one keyboard, >reducing the clutter<. Additionaly if you only have the combined keyboard + emoji one, you now get the emoji icon for easier switching to emoji and back
@nmann
Cool feature. Hopefully it will be copied to android soon.
@nmann @kornel can I have two dual keyboards? So for example “English and german” and “Spanish and Catalan”? That would cut me down from 4 to 2!
@eierund @kornel yes that’s possible!
@nmann @kornel niceeeeeee
@eierund @kornel I have to correct myself. The dual language keyboard only works with a limited amount of languages. Sadly Catalan doesn’t seem to be one of them, sorry :/
@nmann @kornel oh dang! The Catalans will not be amused. ;)
@nmann oh, that's actually a thing I wanted for ages
@nmann /cc @danielsaidi think this is a big deal for third parties. The friction to get to the emoji board before was a huge put off.
