i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.

it's a real oddity and a real beauty

compost.party

it runs @postmarketOS, so thanks to everybody who contributes there. it's really nice to have people who try to understand these devices and allow us to take them beyond walled gardens and planned obsolescence.

also thanks @paupowpow for designing the web page and convincing me to finally show it around

the phone is connected via wifi to a residential internet connection and runs on its own battery. some of the sensors are working as well, so it's very non-web-server-like. it's made out of scraps that were lying around and are now turned into something new.

at the moment it hosts https://links.compost.party which contains some of the links that inspired me. but i'm very open for ideas! if you have something you'd like to run on it, please write me

it's backkkk
psa: compost.party is currently experiencing a major outage. the battery ran out and my neighbors are on vacation and took the keys to the attic with them. we'll resolve this with the required patience
@computersandblues this is awesome! It makes me think I should have one of those solar power panels 🤩
@murilove a friend gifted me his because it drew too little energy for him to be useful. i'm quite happy with it!
@computersandblues This is a really neat project, and I love the links!

@computersandblues I love this! Since you mentioned some sensors were working, it'd be neat if you could poll for those sensor readings alongside the battery reading.

Even something like orientation could be fun. Load up the site and get something like "The battery is at 94% and the phone is facing North"

@notthatdelta
And the accelerometers and compass can give you cool info about the magnetic field, solar winds, and even earthquakes! All at very low power.
@computersandblues
@computersandblues Can it run NextCloud? That would be awesome
@ScriptFanix it could absolutely, yes. in my case though the problem is that it can't handle a lot of traffic, so big files or many requests may become an issue
@computersandblues This is amazing and so inspiring, thank you so much for doing this! ☀️
@computersandblues how are you exposing it to the internet? Something like a cloud flare tunnel? I have a couple of devices that I've wanted to re purpose into something like this for a while, thanks for the reminder!
@ni_nad
I'm using tailscale to access my home devices and was surprised it's held up for about a month now. Sshing from EU to home on West Coast US. Super reliable and free, but not open source. Would love to find an openvpn-like system that i could self host easily.
@computersandblues
@hobs @computersandblues connecting for personal/private use seems to be a great experience with tailscale. I'm curious about public access though!
@ni_nad @hobs i somehow didn't answer this here, but i did elsewhere in this thread. maybe you saw that: it uses dyndns provided by my domain registrar. i would like to explore other methods like tor or yggdrasil when time allows it
@computersandblues ah, thanks! That probably means you don't have to worry about cgnat or ISPs messing too much on the path. For me, tailscale's funnel might be the better way out like hobs says
@ni_nad
I am testing public access for an https server this month. It's supposedly a core feature.
@computersandblues
@hobs @computersandblues err, missed adding you to this reply https://mastodon.social/@ni_nad/112896099191049384 - tailscale funnel is what you're thinking of, I guess?
@ni_nad
Yes indeed. Haven't tested it in earnest yet, but it looks like a cynch.
@computersandblues
@computersandblues you could as well try to join the Solar Protocol (http://solarprotocol.net/)
Solar Protocol

A naturally intelligent network programmed by the sun.

@penguin86 i have looked at it, but i think there's no way to join at the moment. do you know more?

@computersandblues This is super cool!

I've been working on some ideas for low-power, intermittent-availability hosting software, and this is exactly the kind of hardware I'd love to be able to run on someday.

I feel like the era of five-nines "big internet" is poised to inevitably give way to a much more hyperlocal, sustainable approach, and it's always great to find projects that are moving that way.

@computersandblues
Very cool!

Do you know the solar-powered @lowtechmagazine ?
solar.lowtechmagazine.com

@da5nsy thank you! i know about @lowtechmagazine, it's been a great inspiration.
@da5nsy https://links.compost.party lists some additional influences, maybe you find some of that interesting as well

@computersandblues

Where I'm at, you can't get a stable IP address on home residential. Do you have a stable IP, or some kind of dynamic DNS?

@MegaMichelle i'm using dyndns, but i'm additionally considering yggdrasil to get a stable ipv6 address
@computersandblues Damn, I've had this on my "todo" list for ages now! Thanks for sharing your work here. ☺️
@computersandblues "My server ? It's dangling on the tree, right here"
@otyugh
Right under the birdhouse, keeping the nest warm
@computersandblues
@computersandblues This is fab: thanks for sharing! 😎

@computersandblues nice work towards #degrowth. Do more with less.

Boosted, to help with stress testing. :)

@computersandblues Is this a solar panel that can be easily connected to a USB cable or something? Would love to play around with something like this. Got loads of ancient scrap computers and phones and what not lying around.

@computersandblues I loved the project. Is there a self-hosted, single-user, ActivityPub server running on Android?

Is there any project documentation?

@oigreslima i'm not sure about android, it may be in conflict with the background optimization stuff that it's doing to optimize battery life? this is running https://postmarketos.org/, and maybe @gotosocial is what you're looking for?
postmarketOS // real Linux distribution for phones

Aiming for a 10 year life-cycle for smartphones

postmarketOS
@oigreslima @computersandblues it runs Alpine Linux, not Android. GoToSocial might compile in it.
@david @oigreslima @computersandblues I've heard of people running #Honk and #snac2 instances on phones?
@dheadshot @oigreslima @computersandblues haven’t heard about it on phones, but for sure on Pis. It seems snac is pretty light indeed!
@dheadshot @david @oigreslima @computersandblues I'm fairly late to the conversation, but you should hit up @knapjack if you want stories about #honk on retired smartphones. #teamtinyhonkers
@dirk @dheadshot @oigreslima @computersandblues @knapjack "a wizard is never late, nor his is early..." 😁. Thanks for the lead!

@david @dirk @dheadshot @oigreslima @computersandblues #honk runs fine on @termux ! I ran it on the Always Free tier in Google Cloud for a while and then realized my old phone had more RAM and made the pivot.

Currently running on a Raspberry Pi, but only because I was trying to pivot to @postmarketOS and got lazy. 😁

@computersandblues Can you put it behind a CloudFlare proxy? 😉
@despens i was hoping everybody could just queue in line
@computersandblues Should be handy come the apocalypse
@computersandblues yo @abekonge check this cool solar punk web server
@computersandblues
This is very nice, very inspiring! I would love to recreate that, any advice for a beginner ? Maybe a tutorial or a roadmap with some links ?
@Holi i hope i'll write down a detailed description very soon! it took a bit of trial and error and still takes regular care to run
@computersandblues Thanks a lot! I look forward to it! In the meantime, I'll look for my old phones and see if they're compatible.
@computersandblues Sooo I found back a GALAXY S3 NEO. The battery seems dead though. Hopefully it will be possible to make something with it!
@Holi nice! good luck. it seems like you can at least try and install postmarketos on it and play around: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III_Neo_(samsung-s3ve3g)
Samsung Galaxy S III Neo (samsung-s3ve3g) - postmarketOS

@computersandblues

What's the 97% in the green circle on the compost #website about? 😀
